Method: It is a observational, analytic, transversal study. The settings were general and specialist doctors in the district. The population was constituted by a stratified sample of Hospital and Health centers doctors in the city of Tacna (p=255; n=90), those whom were administered an anonymous questionnaire: the Maslach Burnout Inventory that evaluates Depersonalization (DP), Self-esteem (SE), and Emotional Exhaustion (EE); social and personal variables. Student's t test, ANOVA (means), and Chi-square or Fisher test (percentages) Results: The main results obtained from 90 valid questionnaires (35% response rate), show an average age of 42.7±8.6 years old; 84% were male, 78% married, 74% work in hospital. Mean values found were: DP, 4,64 ± 3,89; LP, 44,35 ± 4,05; AE, 14,4 ± 9,82; 15% scored high on one of the three. For AE mean scores were significantly lower in women, work in hospital, those with >10 years seniority, those with >40 years. 42% had psycho-physical disorders. Discussion: In contrast with other studies, a lower level of burnout was found in this sample. Only 15% scored high on one of the three, with irregular distribution in each studied area. Seniority, social/labor or family conflict, and certain personal and job characteristics were associated with high burnout.
