The burgeoning field of urban political ecology (UPE) has drawn much needed attention to the vita... more The burgeoning field of urban political ecology (UPE) has drawn much needed attention to the vital roles that ecological processes play in the production of urban space, and the ways in which these ecological relationships are inextricably intertwined with social, political and economic relations. Building upon historical-geographical studies of the social production of nature Castree and Braun 2001), UPE considers cities in terms of the interaction between "socio-ecological" processes. To express the interdependence between social and biophysical change, some authors have drawn upon Marx's concept of metabolism as the circulatory exchange through which every living thing transforms its external environment and is transformed in turn by that environment. "Nature" and "environment" are understood here as hybrids of biophysical and social phenomena that are always invested with cultural meanings and shaped by power relationships. From this perspective, cities are no more "unnatural" than any other environment or landscape, in so far as they are produced through the metabolic interaction of social and biophysical relationships (Swyngedouw 2004).
