In this paper, we present two new methods for authentication of digital images using invertible w... more In this paper, we present two new methods for authentication of digital images using invertible watermarking. While virtually all watermarking schemes introduce some small amount of non-invertible distortion in the image, the new methods are invertible in the sense that, if the image is deemed authentic, the distortion due to authentication can be removed to obtain the original image data. Two techniques are proposed: one is based on robust spatial additive watermarks combined with modulo addition and the second one on lossless compression and encryption of bit-planes. Both techniques provide cryptographic strength in verifying the image integrity in the sense that the probability of making a modification to the image that will not be detected can be directly related to a secure cryptographic element, such as a hash function. The second technique can be generalized to other data types than bitmap images. As an example, a lossless authentication method for JPEG files is presented and some results discussed. In the paper, we also explain that invertible authentication can only be achieved at the expense of not being able to authenticate every possible image. However, it is argued that all images that occur in practice can be authenticated. The techniques provide new information assurance tools for integrity protection of sensitive imagery, such as medical images or images viewed under non-standard conditions when usual criteria for visibility do not apply.

In this paper, we make a short foray through coding standards for still images and motion video. ... more In this paper, we make a short foray through coding standards for still images and motion video. We first briefly discuss standards already in use, including: Group 3 and Group 4 for bilevel fax images; JPEG for still color images; and H.261, H.263, MPEG-1, and MPEG-2 for motion video. We then cover newly emerging standards such as JBIG1 and JBIG2 for bilevel fax images, JPEG-2000 for still color images, and H.263+ and MPEG-4 for motion video. Finally, we describe some directions currently beyond the standards such as hybrid coding of graphics/photo images, MPEG-7 for multimedia metadata, and possible new technologies.

As counselors empathically listen to their clients’ traumatic experiences on a regular basis, the... more As counselors empathically listen to their clients’ traumatic experiences on a regular basis, there is a potential for counselors to be negatively impacted and become impaired (Abassary & Goodrich, 2014). Without effective protective factors in place, counselors are at risk of experiencing vicarious trauma and subthreshold PTSD from exposure to clients’ traumatic events (Nelson, 2016). The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of the vicarious trauma and subthreshold PTSD symptoms experienced by professional counselors and the factors related to resiliency that protect counselors from developing these symptoms, such as years of professional counseling experience, the amount of one’s trauma caseload, and a personal experience of trauma. The explosive growth of the Internet and the intranets attracted a great deal of attention to the... more The explosive growth of the Internet and the intranets attracted a great deal of attention to the implementations and performances of networked multimedia services, which involve the transport of real-time multimedia streams over non-guaranteed quality of service (QoS) networks. In this paper, we discuss some issues related to the transport of MPEG-2 streams over such networks by means of the most recent transport protocols compliant with the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) [1] defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). MPEG-2 encoded audio and video transmission is important for several applications including high quality video-on-demand as a part of information-on-demand and high quality video conferencing using the existing network infrastructures.

The increasing availability of high speed local area networks (LANs) and the recent developments ... more The increasing availability of high speed local area networks (LANs) and the recent developments in image coding hardware that follow the international standardizations have made multipoint desktop video teleconferencing feasible using mostly off-the-shelf hardware and software. We have implemented a multipoint video teleconferencing system using workstations and personal computers (PCs) on a fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) LAN. The system is based on motion JPEG image coding and uses commercially available hardware and software wherever possible. In this paper, we outline our design experiences.

Transmission of video over IP is currently an active research and development area where significant results have already been achieved. There are already many videoon-demand services offered over the Internet [1]. Also, 2.5G and 3G mobile network operators began to use IP successfully to offer wireless video services. The next big step forward is destined to be flexible distribution of a variety of three-dimensional (3-D) video and 3-D TV services over IP networks. While there are many alternative technologies for 3-D video representation, including holographic, volumetric, geometric (3-D mesh models), and multiview (lightfield), stereoscopic/multiview 3-D video seems to be the most mature technology at the moment. Stereoscopic video consists of two video sequences (left and right views) captured by closely located cameras (approximately the distance between two eyes). If only two views are provided, the user has no other choice but to watch the 3-D scene from the fixed viewpoint of these two cameras. In the real world, if a person moves or turns his/her head around, he/she expects to see the 3-D scene from a somewhat different viewpoint.
