Raymond Evans
My academic research career stretches back to the mid-1960's, with one of the first - if not the first - academic history thesis on frontier and post-frontier relations in 1965 ... and with publications beginning at the start of the 70's (1971) on the Queensland colonial frontier. I have published across many fields of Australian social history research since that time - frontier and post-frontier relations, race and ethic relations generally, war and society study, welfare and deviancy, gender relations and masculinity, Federation study, convict history, popular culture research and so on. Presently, I have been writing and publishing on such topics as the frontier death-rate in Queensland/ Australia, historical biography, memoir and genocide study, especially in Northern Australia. I have also recently published three historically inflected books of poetry entitled HALF CENTURY: FIFTY POEMS, PERSONAL AND POLITICAL (2017), THE MERRY DANCE: POEMS OF MEMORY AND IMAGINATION (2019) and REELING BACKWARDS: POEMS OF REVERSAL AND REFLECTION (2022). I am presently working on the current furore about Samuel Griffith and the Queensland frontier as well as writing for Cambridge University Press and Thames and Hudson, publishers on patterns of genocide in Northern Australia. My academic cv contains almost 250 different published pieces to date.
