While steroids can stimulate and enhance muscle tissue development, long-term or excessive use can increase the risk of heart attack, cancer, and/or psychologic impairments. This review examines the prevalence of steroid use, associated benefits and risks, and the importance of accelerating effective education and prevention efforts

While data on faculty salaries are provided, information on benefits is absent. Anecdotally, faculty benefits contribute to job retention and satisfaction over the long term. In order to achieve a better understanding of the range of benefit packages available across a number of PA programs, the authors conducted a review of the literature and produced an online survey. Methods: Following approval by the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) Research Review Committee, an online survey was conducted between March and April 2006. Two e-mails were sent to the directors of the then 136 accredited PA programs asking them to complete an online survey. The survey contained 14 questions dealing with various faculty benefits, including clinical release time, CME, telecommuting, tuition reimbursement, and payment of professional dues. Results: A sample of 88 PA program directors responded to the survey, for a 65% response rate. Conclusions: PA faculty program directors report that their programs provide a substantial array of employee benefits. Further study is indicated to assess faculty perceptions about their benefits.

As a result, VCD is often misdiagnosed, leading to unnecessary, ineffective, costly, or even dangerous treatment. Here are the facts that will enable you to avoid making an erroneous diagnosis, choosing potentially harmful treatment, and delaying effective treatment.

PAs who graduated between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2010, and actively practice in Indiana were surveyed. Descriptive statistics and chi-square analyses were performed to determine whether any significant relationships existed among practice specialty, location, and gender. 157 participants (33%) responded to the survey and were considered in the final analysis. Males were more likely than females to be influenced by debt in choosing their specialty and the location of their initial job. A majority of PAs would have reconsidered rural practice if they had received federal and or state loan forgiveness for educational debt. This study provides evidence that debt may influence practice specialty and location choice. Further studies are needed to determine how gender might account for decisions to practice in certain specialties and location.

Among physician assistants, generational differences are further amplified by a dramatic shift in gender ratios, which have grown increasingly pronounced with each new generation.

In addition to preventing medical emergencies through effective pre-race planning and other strategies, these clinicians address serious conditions, including exercise-associated collapse, exertional heat stroke, dehydration, and hyponatremia.

Strategies designed to evaluate and increase components of professionalism are now of interest to educators. Skills in improving levels of professionalism can be accurately assessed and taught. Professionalism encompasses attributes of compassion and integrity. Tools to measure indices of compassion have been developed. There are three critical stages in which attributes of compassion and integrity can be assessed: prior to admission, during education, and graduation standards. One effective means of transferring skills related to professionalism is modeling. Health professions educators need to be more aware of the issues related to the assessment of elements of professionalism

This troublesome condition has been chronicled as far back as the first century ad, when Celsus gave detailed accounts in his treatise, De Medicina.1 It is estimated that only 20% of people who experience tinnitus actively seek treatment.2 In the United States, 2 to 3 million of the 12 million patients who do request treatment report lasting symptoms that they describe as debilitating.3 For patients who seek help, the treatment recommended by physicians is typically pharmacotherapeutic—which does not follow guidelines.4 The aim of this article is to reinforce a greater understanding of the mechanisms of tinnitus and integrate that knowledge into treatment guidelines. The article does not discuss surgical treatment of tinnitus.

AR is routinely treated through allergen avoidance and pharmacologic therapy. When these measures fail, however, immunologic treatment may be indicated. This review of AR and its treatment focuses on injection and oral immunotherapy.
