Voltammetric studies of lead (ll), cadmium(ll), copper(ll) and chromium(lll) ions in the presence of selected n-heterocyclic compound
Voltammetry behaviours of lead(II), cadmium(II), copper(II) and chromium(III) ions in the presenc... more Voltammetry behaviours of lead(II), cadmium(II), copper(II) and chromium(III) ions in the presence of ligands with nitrogen bearing group, such as picolinic acid (pyridine-2-carboxylic acid or PA), nicotinic acid (pyridine-3-carboxylic acid or NA) and pyridine-2,4-dicarboxylic (2,4-PDCA) acid were being studied using hanging dropping mercury electrode (HDME) or platinum electrode as working electrode; Ag/AgCl (3 M NaCl) as reference electrode and platinum wire as counter electrode. Enhancement of the current response using voltammetry technique due to adsorption of electroactive species was investigated. Nicotinic acid has been found to cause enhanced peak current for metal ions such as Pb(II) andCd (II) by about 4.9 folds and 1.6 folds, respectively at a mercury electrode. While, picolinic acid has been found to cause current enhancement of reoxidation Cu(II) by about 1.2 folds using mercury electrode. By using platinum electrode, in the presence of 2,4-PDCA, current enhancement was observed by about 9.6 fold in reduction of Cr(III) ions. By optimizing condition the scan rate study for Pb(II), Cd(II) Cu(II) and Cr(III) were 0.6, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.66 respectively under optimum pH. Moreover, the detection limit were 3.55μM for Pb, 1.34μM for Cd, 2.5μM for Cu and 82.4μM for Cr with the sensitivity of cyclic voltammetry is accompanied by good reproducibility. Furthermore, based on the result obtained from double potential step chronocoulometry the diffusion coefficient of Pb-NA, Cd-NA, Cu-PA and Cr(III)-2,4-PDCA complex species are 7.32 x 10-6, 7.08 x 10-7, 6.18 x 10-6 and 3.9 x 10-6 cm2/s respectively. Various studies using techniques such as Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Square Wave Voltammetry (SWV), Chronocoulometry (CC) and Chronoamperometry (CA) demonstrated that this enhancement effect was due to the adsorption of metal-ligand complexes on the electrode surface. Thus, this procedure was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of metal ions (Pb and Cd) in some waste water.

However the prevalence of crab allergy has increased over the past few years. In order to better understand local crab allergy, it is necessary to identify crab allergens. Multiple crab allergens including tropomyosin and arginine kinase have been identified as major allergens in various species of crab. Scylla serrata (mud crab) is an economically important crab species found in the Indo-Pacific region. So, the aim of this study was to identify the IgE-binding proteins of male and female Scylla serrata (mud crab). The raw extracts were prepared from the crab meat. The protein profiles and IgE-reactivity pattern were then identified by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunoblotting technique using sera from 10 patients with mud crab allergy. SDS-PAGE analysis of the male and female crab extracts revealed 19 protein bands ranging from 12 to 250 kDa. Immunoblot of male and female mud crab extracts demonstrated 7 and 5 IgE-binding proteins, respectively, with molecular weights between 30 to 150 kDa. Protein at 36 kDa was detected as the major allergen in both extracts. In addition, several proteins of 41, 50 and 95 kDa were also detected as major allergens in male crab, whereas a 75 kDa protein was detected as a major allergen in female crab. Other potential minor allergens were also observed at various molecular masses with the lower frequency (<25%). Our preliminary results indicated that both male and female crabs have multiple IgE-binding proteins including a protein of 36 kDa, which might be crab tropomyosin.

This study investigated the antibacterial activities of decaffeinated and non-decaffeinated NESCAFÉ instant coffee against some pharyngitis-causing Streptococcus species – Group A Streptococcus, Group B Streptococcus, Group D Streptococcus and Streptococcus pneumoniae at eight different concentrations. NESCAFĖ brand of coffee, which is made and marketed by Nestlé, seems to be the most widely consumed instant coffee preparation the world over. Three sensitivity-testing methods were carried out: disc diffusion, well diffusion and Coffee Agar plate sensitivity testing. Zones of inhibition and growth on the plates were observed at 24 hours and 48 hours. Results show no agreement between the disc and well diffusion methods with both showing inconsistent zones of inhibition on repeat experiments. However inhibition of growth on Coffee Ag...

Three agroforestry components involved in this study include: (1) Karas monoculture, (2) Karas intercropped with lemongrass, and (3) Karas intercropped with guava. Three replicative plots measuring at 6 rows × 5 column of trees were established for each component. The diameter at breast height (DBH) of each component was measured within four time intervals while height was measured within two time intervals which produced three sets and one set of growth, respectively. From the field measurements, the DBH growth were 0.65, 0.71 and 0.95 cm respectively while the height growth were 6.82 and 12.21 m respectively. The means of DBH of Karas for the three components ranged from 1.94 to 2.90 cm with means of height ranged from 3.96 to 7.59 m. These translated into the Periodic Anual Increment (PAI) of diameter and height which were ranged from 1.74 to 2.43 cm/year and 3.47 to 6.65 m /year, respectively. From the analysis of variance (ANOVA), it was found that there is a significant difference in the means DBH and height of Karas among different components and growth interval (P≤0.05). From t-test analysis, there is a significant difference between the first and the second height growth measurements (P≤0.05). However, there is no significant difference in the survival rate among all components (P≥0.05). This concludes that there appear to be intercropping effects in the growth of a 6-year old Karas agroforestry system. The results from this study will be used for subsequent investigation in the assessments of growth performance of Karas under different intercropping components.

Voltammetry behaviours of lead (II) ion in the presence of ligand with N-heterocycle compounds, such as nicotinic acid (pyridine-3-carboxylic acid) were being studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV) on a hanging dropping mercury electrode (HDME). Assessment of the chemical and physical conditions that may favour optimum current enhancement was done by studying the effect of varying pH, concentration of metal ion and scan rate. It was found that in presence nicotinic acid (NA) result in a shift in peak potential (E p) and peak current (I p) in the determination of Pb(II). The addition of 1 x 10-2 M nicotinic acid in 0.1 M potassium chloride at pH 4.0 and scan rate of 100 mV/s in CV was required for optimum current enhancement to be observed by about 4.9 fold and 1.6 fold in oxidation and reduction current of Pb(II) respectively. Based on chronocoulometry and chronoamperometry technique the diffusion for Pb(II) were estimated by 9.18 x 10-6 cm 2 /s and 5.0 µc/cm 2 respectively. The procedure was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of Pb(II) ion in some real samples.

Starch has been given great attention and has been actively investigated to be used as coating materials for CRF because of its degradation properties. Once the analysis on the starch characteristics is completed, the reaction rate of the starch can be developed by using Michaelis-Menten equation as reference. The results of the reaction rate are important to help determine the biodegradation kinetics of the starch. It will also assist in determining the conditions needed to produce the starch film in order to reduce the release rate of fertilizer. Throughout this study, the biodegradation kinetics of starch film will be investigated and thus providing a reference for the selection of coating material for the application of CRF while improving agriculture production.
