Learning from imbalanced data is still a challenging problem in spite of more than two decades of... more Learning from imbalanced data is still a challenging problem in spite of more than two decades of continuous development in this field. To deal with this problem, several data-level and algorithmic-level methods are proposed. Hybrid methods, which combine the advantages of the two previous groups, are also gaining increasing popularity. Therefore, in this paper, we put our focus on new hybrid approaches combining different sampling strategies with adapted decision trees to tackle the binary imbalanced problems. Our experiments consider five preprocessing methods and three asymmetric split criteria, which results in fifteen evaluated combinations. Unlike the majority of the studies, we take into account the intrinsic data characteristics in the analysis of each finding in order to gain a deeper understanding in the field of imbalanced data. Using Normal/Abnormal Video Sequence Categorization to Efficient Facial Expression Recognition in the Wild

The facial expression recognition in real-world conditions, with a large variety of illumination,... more The facial expression recognition in real-world conditions, with a large variety of illumination, pose, resolution, and occlusions, is a very challenging task. The majority of the literature approaches, which deal with these challenges, do not take into account the variation of the quality of the different videos. Unlike these approaches, this paper suggests treating the video sequences according to their quality. Using Isolation Forests (IF) algorithm, the video sequences are categorized into two categories: normal videos that visibly express clear illumination and frontal pose of face, and abnormal videos that present poor illumination, different poses of face, occulted face. Two independent facial expression classifiers for the normal and abnormal videos are built using Random Forests (RF) algorithm. The experiments have demonstrated that processing independently normal and abnormal videos can be used to improve the efficiency of the facial expression recognition in the Wild.

This paper suggests an approach to automatic facial expression recognition for images of frontal ... more This paper suggests an approach to automatic facial expression recognition for images of frontal faces. Two methods of appearance features extraction is combined: Local Binary Pattern (LBP) on the whole face region and Eigenfaces on the eyes-eyebrows and/or on the mouth regions. Support Vector Machines (SVM), K Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and MultiLayer Perceptron (MLP) are applied separately as learning technique to generate classifiers for facial expression recognition. Furthermore, we conduct to the many empirical studies to fix the optimal parameters of the approach. We use three baseline databases to validate our approach in which we record interesting results compared to the related works regardless of using faces under controlled and uncontrolled environment.
