This ability differs significantly from written English grammar since it occurs naturally and spontaneously during conversations without any preparation. This study examined spoken grammatical errors committed by English major students during the seminar proposal examination at one public university in Jambi. To carry out this study, the researcher utilized case study research. This research effort enlisted the participation of five students from the eighth and tenth semesters of an English education study program, one male and four females. The researcher classified the grammatical errors based on Richard's theory (1990) as (1) Errors in the production of verb groups, (2) errors in the distribution of verb groups, (3) miscellaneous errors, (4) errors in the use of prepositions, (5) errors in the use of articles, and (6) errors in the use of the question. The spoken grammatical errors were assessed using the six categories above after listening, audiotaping, and transcribing their seminar proposal assessment. The findings and discussion sections will go through each feature type in further detail. The researcher expected to get some distinct information in relation to students' spoken grammatical errors and make some improvements through teaching and learning developments.

This study focused on investigating speaking disfluency of an English major students at one publi... more This study focused on investigating speaking disfluency of an English major students at one public university in Jambi, Indonesia in the academic year 2022/2023. The researcher applied qualitative method with a case study approach to carry out this study and as the way of collecting the data. Four first year students of English education study program consisting of two males and two females were recruited as participants of this research project. To identify the types of disfluencies produced by the students, the researcher gave them a video from YouTube with the title "Ten mistakes to avoid when defending your thesis" from Ranywayz Random YouTube channel and asked them to retell the content of the video using their own words. After listening, audiotaping, and transcribing their speaking, the disfluencies encountered were analyzed by using Gleason and Ratner theory. The students' disfluencies were then classified into some types such as hesitation, repetition, false starts, and fillers. Each type of speech disfluency would be discussed in the results and discussion sections.

Therefore, this study aims to explore the perception of EFL Pre-service Teachers' Perception in Teaching English Process during Kampus Mengajar Program. By using a qualitative descriptive method, five Pre-service teachers of the English Education study program at University of Jambi were interviewed as alumni of Kampus Mengajar program batch 4. The data were analyzed by using data reduction, data display and verification developed by Miles and Huberman (1994). The results of this study, there were also many problems faced by the participants such as lack of experience in teaching, lack of facilities for teaching, difficulties with students' abilities in learning English, and difficulties with the school location. Despite that, there were also some strategies used by the participants to overcome those problems such as maximizing preparations for teaching English process, have backup plan for the facilities, learnt to know students' needs, and leaving early if the school is far away.

The research was aimed at observing the speaking problems in doing oral presentation in English a... more The research was aimed at observing the speaking problems in doing oral presentation in English as a Foreign Language Teacher Education Program at Universitas Jambi. Telephone semi-structured interview was applied in this research to gain the data from nine students of batch 2018 from three classes. The results of this research revealed seven speaking problems found that the students faced in doing an oral presentation. Vocabulary was the most problem the students met, and speaking in gargling was the least problem. The five other issues were getting nervous, pronunciation, grammar, not understanding the material, and not being well-prepared. The students did several things to overcome difficulties: improvisation, asking for help from friends, using Indonesian, and getting the notes. They did various things to overcome those problems depending on the situation while doing an oral presentation.

This study employed a quantitative research with used a survey method by using questionnaires to collect the data and SPSS to analyze the data from 51 respondents from one of university in Jambi. This research expected to be useful for students and other researchers. The questionnaire consists of six category in this research. The result of this research showed that in the first category got three interpretations (High, Moderate, Low) for five total item. The scales of the item ranging from 2.88 to 3.76 mean score. The second category got a moderate interpretation with the percentage 60% of the respondents chose neutral and 28% chose agree. The third and fourth category got high and moderate interpretation. The fifth and the last category got a moderate interpretation with the most of participants chose neutral. The result of the data analysis revealed that most of the students as the participants had a positive perception of learning speaking by virtual learning. Moreover the lack of internet connection should have accessible for them to get access on the internet. Beside that 34% of the respondents prefer to learning by offline learning (traditional learning).

Further, most of those previous studies have been conducted using exclusively quantitative methods. In response to these empirical and methodological gaps, the current qualitative descriptive case study investigates how Indonesian lecturers employed their strategies over their path of enhancing their English proficiency. We collected data through semi-structured interviews obtained from eight Indonesian faculty members. In this study, we found five overarching themes, including practicing in academic fields, learning by enjoying, engaging with academic resources, using online platforms, and employing the personal convenience of language engagement strategies. Findings showed that most language learning strategies employed by our participants were concerned with autonomous learning.

The problem is that language teachers o not really make use of this facility effectively in order to improve the students' language competence. The population of this study was all the second-year students of SMU Negeri 3 Palembang in the academic year 2001/2002. The sample comprises 40 students chosen based on pre-test result ranging from 3.0 to 6.1 and those who did not take English course out of school activity. The students were divided into the Experimental Group which was taught using Inductive Strategy and the Control group which was taught using Mechanical Drills Strategy. Each group consisting of 20 students namely 10 males and 10 females. To collect the data, pre-test and post-test were given before and after doing the treatment and they were analysed using SPSS program. The result of this study proved that there was no significant difference in achievement between the students who were taught active and passive voice using Inductive Strategy and those who were taught using Mechanical Drills Strategy. In other words, the two strategies have the same effectiveness in teaching active and passive voice material.

It emerges every time a foreign language learner learns English. This seems to be unavoidable since learning a language requires a process from L1 to L2. The objectives of the study were to find out whether or not (1) there was a significant increase ... more The objectives of the study were to find out whether or not (1) there was a significant increase of students' achievement in vocabulary and reading literacy after they were taught using SQ3R with authentic texts and simplified texts (2) there was any significant difference in the students' achievement in vocabulary and reading literacy between the students who were taught using SQ3R with authentic texts and simplified texts, and (3) there was a significant interaction of authentic texts and simplified texts toward reading literacy and vocabulary mastery of the students who were high and low achievers. Factorial experimental design was used in this study because this study involved two parallel groups which became experimental group 1 and 2. The population of this study was 56 six semester students of Jambi University in the academic year 2012/2013. In selecting the sample, TOEFL ITP was administered to the population. The students were categorized into high and low achievers based on the score. 56 students from the two classes were selected as the sample; 16 students were high achievers and 40 students were low achievers which were distributed equally to the two experimental groups. In collecting the data, tests (pre and post-test) were used to both groups. The data of the test results were analyzed using t-test in SPSS 15. The result of independent sample t-test analysis showed that there was no significant difference in students' achievement of vocabulary and reading literacy between both experimental groups as well as level of achievement for both high and low achievers.

The sample comprises 40 students chosen based on pre-test result ranging from 3.0 to 6.1 and those who did not take English course out of school activity. The students were divided into the Experimental Group which was taught using Inductive Strategy and the Control group which was taught using Mechanical Drills Strategy. Each group consisting of 20 students namely 10 males and 10 females. To collect the data, pre-test and post-test were given before and after doing the treatment and they were analysed using SPSS program. The result of this study proved that there was no significant difference in achievement between the students who were taught active and passive voice using Inductive Strategy and those who were taught using Mechanical Drills Strategy. In other words, the two strategies have the same effectiveness in teaching active and passive voice material.

Although many scholars have conducted studies on Language Learning Strategies (LLS) around the wo... more Although many scholars have conducted studies on Language Learning Strategies (LLS) around the world, this issue is still new in the context of English for Medical Purposes (EMP), especially as used by Indonesian pharmacy students. Further, a majority of those previous studies have been conducted using exclusively quantitative research. In response to these empirical and methodological gaps, the current research adopts a qualitative case study to examine the LLS used by Indonesian pharmacy students, as guided by Oxford’s (1990) LLS theory. This study utilized in-depth interviews to gather information from participants. The thematic analysis of the semi-structured interviews presented five major strategies used by learners: engaging in social interaction, enriching their vocabulary, using web based language learning, practicing through online platforms, and employing fun learning. Findings demonstrate that most of their learning strategies involve employing online platforms.

It emerges every time a foreign language learner learns English. This seems to be unavoidable since learning a language requires a process from L1 to L2. More elaborately, the more gaps a learner has between L1 and L2, the more effort he needs to improve his language proficiency. On the contrary, the narrower gaps he has between L1 and L2, the less effort he needs to improve his language proficiency. This paper tries to describe the process of interlanguage a learner experiences as the attempts to reach the better level of language proficiency, causes of interlanguage, and the influence of L1 to the mastery of L2.

The population of this study was all the second-year students of SMU Negeri 3 Palembang in the academic year 2001/2002. The objectives of the study were to find out whether or not (1) there was a significant increase ... more The objectives of the study were to find out whether or not (1) there was a significant increase of students' achievement in vocabulary and reading literacy after they were taught using SQ3R with authentic texts and simplified texts (2) there was any significant difference in the students' achievement in vocabulary and reading literacy between the students who were taught using SQ3R with authentic texts and simplified texts, and (3) there was a significant interaction of authentic texts and simplified texts toward reading literacy and vocabulary mastery of the students who were high and low achievers. Factorial experimental design was used in this study because this study involved two parallel groups which became experimental group 1 and 2. The population of this study was 56 six semester students of Jambi University in the academic year 2012/2013. In selecting the sample, TOEFL ITP was administered to the population. The students were categorized into high and low achievers based on the score. 56 students from the two classes were selected as the sample; 16 students were high achievers and 40 students were low achievers which were distributed equally to the two experimental groups. In collecting the data, tests (pre and post-test) were used to both groups. The data of the test results were analyzed using t-test in SPSS 15. The result of independent sample t-test analysis showed that there was no significant difference in students' achievement of vocabulary and reading literacy between both experimental groups as well as level of achievement for both high and low achievers.
