In order to overcome this stringent situation this moribund sector needs the attention of the technologists to carry on research works in right direction. At present the handloom products are mainly used for the apparels and upholstery or furnishing fabrics. In the present study, an approach has been made to study the effect of different weaves or interlacement patterns on some important physical/mechanical properties of 100% cotton hand-woven fabrics. Five different category of fabric samples woven with five different weaves namely plain, warp rib, weft rib, 1/3 twill and 2/2 twill have been prepared from the same raw material and keeping all other weaving parameters constant to study the effects of weave, i.e., inter...

Application of Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) Technique for Gradation of Jute Fibres

It is being popularly used in the field of engineering, banking, fixing policy matters etc. It can also be applied for taking decisions in daily life like selecting a car to purchase, selecting bride or groom and many others. Various MCDM methods namely Weighted Sum Model (WSM), Weighted Product Model (WPM), Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solutions (TOPSIS) and Elimination and Choice Translating Reality (ELECTRE) are there to solve many decision making problems, each having its own limitations. However it is very difficult to decide which MCDM method is the best. MCDM methods are prospective quantitative approaches for solving decision problems involving finite number of alternatives and criteria. Very few research works in textiles have been carried out with the help of this technique particularly wher...

The Box and Behnken design for three variables and three levels has been used to study the influence of count of the yarn spun (Ne), twist multiplier and proportion of eri fibre in the blends on some important tensile properties of the yarns produced. The chosen level of variables remaining within the industrially acceptable limits shows that fibre parameters and yarn parameters are the determining factors to influence yarn tensile properties.

Integrated Handloom Cluster Development Scheme (IHCDS) is being implemented by the Development Co... more Integrated Handloom Cluster Development Scheme (IHCDS) is being implemented by the Development Commissioner for Handloom, Ministry of Textile, GOI since the year 2005-06 with a broad objective to develop traditional Indian handloom clusters in an inclusive and holistic manner. One of the important objectives of this scheme is to build the clusters’ capacity to meet the challenges of the market and make them globally competitive. Presently, IHCDS is operational in 20 selected clusters spread across 12 states. Identification of potential markets and promotion of market driven designs are some of the essential approaches for the development of any handloom cluster and till now modest attention has been paid towards market developmental activities like market assessment, study of market trends and export potential for its products. The three-part series of papers reports on the cluster development programme of Shantipur handloom cluster to formulate a sustainable business plan as well a...
