In Europe the extinction of the Neanderthals, firmly associated with Mousterian technology, has received much attention, and evidence of their survival after 35 kyr bp has recently been put in doubt. Here we present data, based on a high-resolution record of human occupation from Gorham's Cave, Gibraltar, that establish the survival of a population of Neanderthals to 28 kyr bp. These Neanderthals survived in the southernmost point of Europe, within a particular physiographic context, and are the last currently recorded anywhere. Our results show that the Neanderthals survived in isolated refuges well after the arrival of modern humans in Europe.

The impact of late Upper Pleistocene climate change in the western Mediterranean region has been ... more The impact of late Upper Pleistocene climate change in the western Mediterranean region has been mainly documented through marine records. Archaeological and geomorphological continental records now available for the coast of Má laga complement these records for the second part of the last major glacial episode and the early stages of the Holocene. This paper provides an overview of the archaeological, chronological and palaeoenvironmental data from the end of the Middle Palaeolithic period to the Epipalaeolithic. Sequences from the two major sites, Nerja and Bajondillo, indicate a mosaic-type response of ecosystems to the rapidly shifting conditions of the Last Glacial episode. Terrestrial mammals, for example, show no major variations from present-day communities. Plant remains in contrast, demonstrates the existence of localised refuge areas for species that would not otherwise have survived in the more widely prevailing climatic conditions of the time, whereas remains of fish and, secondarily, birds demonstrate the existence of communities without any present-day analogues combining Mediterranean and Boreal (i.e., northern Atlantic) taxa. From an archaeological standpoint, the major cultural shift is the onset of marine fishing, beginning in the Solutrean. This coincided with the end of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) episode. The faunal record also testifies to the rising importance of marine resources more generally. Although the data have not been used systematically to test the validity of the Broad Spectrum Revolution (BSR) hypothesis, the hints for it in the area seem compelling from the start of the Solutrean onwards.

The site is located in the saline lake of El Gallo. Chronology extends from Chalcolithic time to the XV century AD. The vegetation dynamics from the pollen diagrams can be correlated with the anthropization of the landscape as well as with the evolution of the paleocoast and the saltmarshes.

Many lizards have diverse glands that produce chemosignals used in intraspecific communication and that can have reproductive consequences. For example, information in chemosignals of male lizards can be used in intrasexual competition to identify and assess the fighting potential or dominance status of rival males either indirectly through territorial scent-marks or during agonistic encounters. Moreover, females of several lizard species "prefer" to establish or spend more time on areas scent-marked by males with compounds signaling a better health or body condition or a higher genetic compatibility, which can have consequences for their mating success and inter-sexual selection processes. We review here recent studies that suggest that the information content of chemosignals of lizards may be reliable because several physiological and endocrine processes would regulate the proportions of chemical compounds available for gland secretions. Because chemosignals are produced by the organism or come from the diet, they should reflect physiological changes, such as different hormonal levels (e.g. testosterone or corticosterone) or different health states (e.g. parasitic infections, immune response), and reflect the quality of the diet of an individual. More importantly, some compounds that may function as chemosignals also have other important functions in the organism (e.g. as antioxidants or regulating the immune system), so there could be trade-offs between allocating these compounds to attending physiological needs or to produce costly sexual "chemical…

This article describes the experience of knowledge translation between researchers of the ITSAL (... more This article describes the experience of knowledge translation between researchers of the ITSAL (immigration, work and health) project and representatives of organizations working with immigrants to discuss the results obtained in the project and future research lines. A meeting was held, attended by three researchers and 18 representatives from 11 institutions. Following a presentation of the methodology and results of the project, the participants discussed the results presented and research areas of interest, thus confirming matches between the two sides and obtaining proposals of interest for the ITSAL project. We understand the process described as an approach to social validation of some of the main results of this project. This experience has allowed us to open a channel of communication with the target population of the study, in line with the necessary two-way interaction between researchers and users.

During pregnancy, the locomotor performance of gravid females might be diminished due to the additional weight acquired. In addition, egg production may also increase thermoregulatory, metabolic and physiological costs. Also, pregnant females have greater potential fitness and should take fewer risks. Thus, females should ponder their reproductive state when considering their behavioural responses under risky situations. Here, we examine how reproductive state influence risk-taking behaviour in different contexts in female Spanish terrapins (Mauremys leprosa). We simulated predator attacks of different risk levels and measured the time that the turtles spent hiding entirely inside their own shells (i.e. appearance times). We also assessed the subsequent time after emergence from the shell that the turtles spent immobile monitoring for predators before starting to escape actively (i.e. waiting times). Likewise, we performed a novel-environment test and measured the exploratory activity of turtles. We found no correlations between appearance time, waiting time or exploratory activity, but appearance times were correlated across different risk levels. Only appearance time was affected by the reproductive state, where gravid females reappeared relatively later from their shells after a predator attack than non-gravid ones. Moreover, among gravid females, those carrying greater clutches tended to have longer appearance times. This suggests that only larger clutches could affect hiding behaviour in risky contexts. In contrast, waiting time spent scanning for predators and exploratory activity were not affected by the reproductive state. These differences between gravid and non-gravid females might be explained by the metabolic-physiological costs associated with egg production and embryo maintenance, as well as by the relatively higher potential fitness of gravid females.
ABSTRACT To characterize the temporal and spatial variability of total mass fluxes in the Blanes ... more ABSTRACT To characterize the temporal and spatial variability of total mass fluxes in the Blanes submarine canyon and the nearby southern open slope, eight near-bottom sediment traps were deployed at 300, 900, 1200 and 1500 m along the canyon axis, and at 900, 1200, 1500 and 1800 m of water depth on the southern open slope from November 2008 to November 2009. The results obtained show that mass fluxes were higher into the canyon, ranging from 0.05 to 82.67 g m−2 d−1, compared with those from the open slope that ranged from 0.01 to 9.91 g m2 d−1. Both environments were highly influenced by atmospheric forcing and showed increased total mass fluxes during autumn and winter months. The spatial distribution of total mass fluxes and major constituents (organic matter, carbonate, opal and lithogenics) highlights the contrasts amongst the two physiographic domains in the study area (canyons vs. open slope). The temporal evolution of particle fluxes shows three distinct situations succeeding each other along the year. These are determined by: (1) storms in autumn and winter, driving 60% of the annual total mass flux in Blanes Canyon and 44% in the open slope stations, and also 60% and 40% of the annual OC flux in Blanes Canyon and the southern open slope, respectively; (2) open sea convection in late winter and spring, which is accompanied by a phytoplankton bloom and drives 13% of the settling OC in the canyon and 34% in the open slope; and (3) dust inputs and resuspension by bottom trawling in late spring and -summer months, driving 17% of the annual OC flux in the canyon and 18% in the slope.
ABSTRACT Temporal patterns in deep-sea fish reproduction are presently unknown for the majority o... more ABSTRACT Temporal patterns in deep-sea fish reproduction are presently unknown for the majority of deep continental margins. A series of seasonal trawling surveys between depths of 300 to 1750 m in the Blanes submarine canyon and its adjacent open slope (NW Mediterranean) were conducted. The bathymetric size distributions and reproductive cycles of the most abundant species along the NW Mediterranean margin were analyzed to assess the occurrence of (i) temporal patterns in reproduction (i.e., spawning season) along a bathymetric gradient and (ii) preferential depth strata for recruitment. The fish assemblages were grouped in relation to their bathymetric distribution: upper slope, middle slope and lower slope species. Middle-slope species (i.e., 800–1350 m) showed short (i.e., highly seasonal) reproductive activity compared to the upper (300–800 m) and lower (1350–1750 m) ones. Our results, together with those previously published for megabenthic crustacean decapods in the area, suggest a cross-phyla depth-related trend of seasonality in reproduction. In the middle and lower slope species, the reproductive activity reached a maximum in the autumn–winter months and decreased in the spring. The observed seasonal spawning patterns appear to be ultimately correlated with changes in the downward transport of organic particles and with seasonal changes in the physicochemical characteristics of the surrounding water masses. The distribution of juveniles was associated with the bathymetric stratum where intermediate nepheloid layers interact with the continental margins, indicating that this stratum acts as a deep-sea fish nursery area.

Research on fluctuating asymmetry (FA)-mediated sexual selection has focused almost exclusively o... more Research on fluctuating asymmetry (FA)-mediated sexual selection has focused almost exclusively on visual signals and ignored chemical communication despite the fact that many species rely on chemical signals for attracting mates. Female mate choice based on visual traits appears to be rare in lizards. However, the femoral glands of male lizards produce pheromones which might transmit chemical information about an individual's developmental stability. Therefore, we hypothesized that mate choice may be based on chemical cues. We analysed the effect of the developmental stability levels of males on the attractiveness of males' scents to females in a laboratory experiment with the lizard Lacerta monticola. When we offered two males of similar body size, females preferentially associated with the scents of males with low FA in their femoral pores and also with the scents of males with a higher number of femoral pores. This suggested that the females were able to discriminate the FA of the males by chemical signals alone and that the females preferred to be in areas marked by males of high quality, thus increasing their opportunities of mating with males of high quality. We suggest that the quality and/or amount of male pheromones could communicate the heritable genetic quality of a male to the female and thereby serve as the basis for adaptive female choice in lizards.

However, research on color ornaments has focused mainly on birds, lizards or fish, but remains practically unknown in other animal groups such as turtles. In addition, female ornaments and their relation with sexual selection also remain almost unknown. Here, we measured the coloration of the shell and the limb stripes of male and female Spanish terrapins Mauremys leprosa and explored the existence of sexual dichromatism and the relation of color characteristics with body size and health state estimated from the immune response to the injection of an antigen (phytohaemagglutinin test). Our results showed that shell coloration, which could be constrained by natural selection to be cryptic, changed with body size, but did not differ between sexes. In contrast, females had brighter and less ultraviolet-saturated and more orange-saturated limb stripes than males. In females, interindividual variation in limb stripe coloration was related with body size and immune response suggesting that this coloration may inform honestly about multiple traits that could be important in sexual selection. In contrast, coloration of limb stripes of males was duller than in females, and was not related with any trait suggesting that coloration is not important in sexual selection for males.

This study now designed to identify the cognitive dimensions involved in coping and the psycholog... more This study now designed to identify the cognitive dimensions involved in coping and the psychological adjustment of parents of children with myelomeningocele. The study included 118 adults who were parents of children diagnosed with myelomeningocele. Comparison of means and regression analyses were performed to analyze variables and their contribution to parental adjustment. Significant differences were found for four thinking styles; coping based on Seeking Social Support and Positive Reappraisal was used frequently. The Internally Focused thinking style contributed the most to adjustment. The thinking styles identified help to detect stable responses associated with caring for children with myelomeningocele. Such responses may be good indicators of the way parents cope with their situation, allowing us to determine their adaptive efficacy and shedding light on designing interventions targeted at enhancing development of coping strategies in these kinds of situations.
Pheromonal communication seems to be especially important in amphisbaenians, a group of reptiles ... more Pheromonal communication seems to be especially important in amphisbaenians, a group of reptiles morphologically and functionally adapted to fossorial life. Both male and female amphisbaenians (Blanus cinereus) produce copious amounts of a secretion from the precloacal glands. Analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed that these secretions contain 29 major lipophilic compounds, including several steroids (mainly cholesterol and cholesteryl methyl ether), n-C9 to n-C18 carboxylic acids (more diverse in males), and methyl and long-chain (waxy)-type esters of carboxylic acids, along with squalene (mainly in males) and tocopherol (only in females). There were clear intersexual differences in the presence/absence of some compounds, such as some fatty acids, steroids, and tocopherol, and in the relative proportions of some shared compounds, such as squalene. These differences may explain how the sexes of this amphisbaenian discriminate one another based on scent alone. The abundance of steroids and waxy esters in secretions of both male and female amphisbaenians may be useful to scent mark underground tunnels to facilitate orientation by these organisms.

Male slow-worms discriminated conspecific male and female scent deposits. Males selected the arm with female scent, suggesting that scent deposits may be used to locate potential mates. Also, male slow-worms did not avoid the chemicals of other males, suggesting that they are not territorial. However, males discriminated their own scent from those of other males, and spent more time exploring the arm with other male scent, which suggests that scent marks may bear information that could be used in future intrasexual social contexts. We conclude that discrimination of conspecifics based on scents may be more widespread than previously expected among lizards inhabiting visually restricted environments.

Research on fluctuating asymmetry (FA)-mediated sexual selection has focused almost exclusively o... more Research on fluctuating asymmetry (FA)-mediated sexual selection has focused almost exclusively on visual signals and ignored chemical communication despite the fact that many species rely on chemical signals for attracting mates. Female mate choice based on visual traits appears to be rare in lizards. However, the femoral glands of male lizards produce pheromones which might transmit chemical information about an individual's developmental stability. Therefore, we hypothesized that mate choice may be based on chemical cues. We analysed the effect of the developmental stability levels of males on the attractiveness of males' scents to females in a laboratory experiment with the lizard Lacerta monticola. When we offered two males of similar body size, females preferentially associated with the scents of males with low FA in their femoral pores and also with the scents of males with a higher number of femoral pores. This suggested that the females were able to discriminate the FA of the males by chemical signals alone and that the females preferred to be in areas marked by males of high quality, thus increasing their opportunities of mating with males of high quality. We suggest that the quality and/or amount of male pheromones could communicate the heritable genetic quality of a male to the female and thereby serve as the basis for adaptive female choice in lizards.

However, research on color ornaments has focused mainly on birds, lizards or fish, but remains practically unknown in other animal groups such as turtles. In addition, female ornaments and their relation with sexual selection also remain almost unknown. Here, we measured the coloration of the shell and the limb stripes of male and female Spanish terrapins Mauremys leprosa and explored the existence of sexual dichromatism and the relation of color characteristics with body size and health state estimated from the immune response to the injection of an antigen (phytohaemagglutinin test). Our results showed that shell coloration, which could be constrained by natural selection to be cryptic, changed with body size, but did not differ between sexes. In contrast, females had brighter and less ultraviolet-saturated and more orange-saturated limb stripes than males. In females, interindividual variation in limb stripe coloration was related with body size and immune response suggesting that this coloration may inform honestly about multiple traits that could be important in sexual selection. In contrast, coloration of limb stripes of males was duller than in females, and was not related with any trait suggesting that coloration is not important in sexual selection for males.

This study now designed to identify the cognitive dimensions involved in coping and the psycholog... more This study now designed to identify the cognitive dimensions involved in coping and the psychological adjustment of parents of children with myelomeningocele. The study included 118 adults who were parents of children diagnosed with myelomeningocele. Comparison of means and regression analyses were performed to analyze variables and their contribution to parental adjustment. Significant differences were found for four thinking styles; coping based on Seeking Social Support and Positive Reappraisal was used frequently. The Internally Focused thinking style contributed the most to adjustment. The thinking styles identified help to detect stable responses associated with caring for children with myelomeningocele. Such responses may be good indicators of the way parents cope with their situation, allowing us to determine their adaptive efficacy and shedding light on designing interventions targeted at enhancing development of coping strategies in these kinds of situations.
Pheromonal communication seems to be especially important in amphisbaenians, a group of reptiles ... more Pheromonal communication seems to be especially important in amphisbaenians, a group of reptiles morphologically and functionally adapted to fossorial life. Both male and female amphisbaenians (Blanus cinereus) produce copious amounts of a secretion from the precloacal glands. Analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed that these secretions contain 29 major lipophilic compounds, including several steroids (mainly cholesterol and cholesteryl methyl ether), n-C9 to n-C18 carboxylic acids (more diverse in males), and methyl and long-chain (waxy)-type esters of carboxylic acids, along with squalene (mainly in males) and tocopherol (only in females). There were clear intersexual differences in the presence/absence of some compounds, such as some fatty acids, steroids, and tocopherol, and in the relative proportions of some shared compounds, such as squalene. These differences may explain how the sexes of this amphisbaenian discriminate one another based on scent alone. The abundance of steroids and waxy esters in secretions of both male and female amphisbaenians may be useful to scent mark underground tunnels to facilitate orientation by these organisms.
We tested the ability of male slow-worms, Anguis fragilis, a limbless anguid lizard with secretiv... more We tested the ability of male slow-worms, Anguis fragilis, a limbless anguid lizard with secretive, semifossorial habits, to detect chemical associated with conspecifics by using a T-maze in the laboratory. Male slow-worms discriminated conspecific male and female scent deposits. Males selected the arm with female scent, suggesting that scent deposits may be used to locate potential mates. Also, male slow-worms did not avoid the chemicals of other males, suggesting that they are not territorial. However, males discriminated their own scent from those of other males, and spent more time exploring the arm with other male scent, which suggests that scent marks may bear information that could be used in future intrasexual social contexts. We conclude that discrimination of conspecifics based on scents may be more widespread than previously expected among lizards inhabiting visually restricted environments.
