In Ghana, the use of medicinal plants is a known and an acceptable practice common to all the reg... more In Ghana, the use of medicinal plants is a known and an acceptable practice common to all the regions and ethnic groups, with about 60% to 70% of Ghanaians depending on traditional medicine for their healthcare needs. Even though medicinal plants are all over the country and are of great benefits to a lot of Ghanaians, there is little or no proper documentation on medicinal plants use in Ghana; how it all started and where it is today, as well as what is being done to promote its use and some challenges being faced with its use as a country. This paper therefore sought to assess and compile generally, Medicinal plants use in Ghana; focusing on the use of some plant medicine, development and advancement in the herbal medicine practice, as well as associated challenges. Available literature and information on medicinal plants use in Ghana were compiled by searching through electronic database such as Google Scholar, PubMed, Science direct, SciFinder and other relevant websites, as well as books and reports. A brief history, measures taken to develop and advance plant medicine use and some specific challenges facing plant medicine practice and use in the county have been discussed in detail in this write-up. This compilation is believed to bring to book the value of some medicinal plants in Ghana and the efforts being made to promote herbal drugs to complement orthodox medication.

This review focusses on discussions about its traditional therapeutic benefits, Ethnopharmacological studies, pharmacological, toxicological and phytochemical relevance. Materials and Methods: Electronic database such as PubMed, SciFinder, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Excerpta database and Springer were used in the search for filtered investigations on Cassia sieberiana. This chapter focuses on reviewing publications on medicinal plants used in the treatment of commo... more This chapter focuses on reviewing publications on medicinal plants used in the treatment of common diseases such as malaria, cholera, pneumonia, tuberculosis and asthma. Traditional medicine is still recognized as the preferred primary health care system in many rural communities, due to a number of reasons including affordability and effectiveness. The review concentrated on current literature on medicinal plants, highlighting on information about ethnobotany, phytochemistry and pharmacology. The search for publications on medicinal plants with scientifically proven efficacy was carried out using electronic databases such as Science Direct, Google Scholar, SciFinder and PubMed. In all, about 46 species of different families with potent biological and pharmacological activities were reviewed. All the plants reviewed exhibited potent activity confirming their various traditional uses and their ability to treat prevalent diseases.

The lack of knowledge in the levels of essential mineral contents and heavy metal constituents of C. sieberiana normally collected from various sites for preparation of herbal products can pose serious health risks to consumers. The elemental contents (Ca, Mg, K, Na, Cl, Hg, Pb, As, Ni, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, N, S and C) of a mixture of the stem and root barks (CSR) of Cassia sieberiana collected from Agomeda in the Eastern Region of Ghana and its extracts (absolute ethanol (CSE 1), 70% ethanol (CSE 2)) were investigated in this study. For the purposes of identification and characterization of CSR, CSE 1 and CSE 2, FT-IR and phytochemical analyses were conducted. The quantity of metals in all test samples were within the acceptable WHO permissible limits except for Cl, Fe, Mn, Pb and Cd contents in CSR.
