The multivalent salt dependent behaviors of a charged dendrimer in solution are investigated by m... more The multivalent salt dependent behaviors of a charged dendrimer in solution are investigated by molecular dynamics simulations with explicit free ions. We find that the charged dendrimers show a dense-core conformation together with the back-folding of terminal monomers to the interior under all the conditions studied. We also observe an interesting ion exchange phenomenon, the replacement of the condensed monovalent counterions by multivalent salt ions due to a strong electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, we find that the dendrimer adopts an extended conformation in the absence of salt. Upon addition of salt, the dendrimer collapses as a result of a drop in the osmotic pressure inside the dendrimer. With an additional increase in the salt concentration, the dendrimer weakly swells due to an enhanced excluded volume effect of the adsorbed salt ions. The overcharge phenomenon also appears in our system. Consequently, our findings show a strong dependence of the conformation of charged dendrimers on salt concentration and give valuable insight into their behaviors at various salt concentrations at the molecular level.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Porphyrin−Dendrimer Systems: Toward Modeling Electron Transfer in Solution
The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2008
We have performed computational simulations of porphyrin-dendrimer systems--a cationic porphyrin ... more We have performed computational simulations of porphyrin-dendrimer systems--a cationic porphyrin electrostatically associated to a negatively charged dendrimer--using the method of classical molecular dynamics (MD) with an atomistic force field. Previous experimental studies have shown a strong quenching effect of the porphyrin fluorescence that was assigned to electron transfer (ET) from the dendrimer's tertiary amines (Paulo, P. M. R.; Costa, S. M. B. J. Phys. Chem. B 2005, 109, 13928). In the present contribution, we evaluate computationally the role of the porphyrin-dendrimer conformation in the development of a statistical distribution of ET rates through its dependence on the donor-acceptor distance. We started from simulations without explicit solvent to obtain trajectories of the donor-acceptor distance and the respective time-averaged distributions for two dendrimer sizes and different initial configurations of the porphyrin-dendrimer pair. By introducing explicit solvent (water) in our simulations, we were able to estimate the reorganization energy of the medium for the systems with the dendrimer of smaller size. The values obtained are in the range 0.6-1.5 eV and show a linear dependence with the inverse of the donor-acceptor distance, which can be explained by a two-phase dielectric continuum model taking into account the medium heterogeneity provided by the dendrimer organic core. Dielectric relaxation accompanying ET was evaluated from the simulations with explicit solvent showing fast decay times of some tens of femtoseconds and slow decay times in the range of hundreds of femtoseconds to a few picoseconds. The variations of the slow relaxation times reflect the heterogeneity of the dendrimer donor sites which add to the complexity of ET kinetics as inferred from the experimental fluorescence decays.

Steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopy and time-resolved fluorescence measurements wer... more Steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopy and time-resolved fluorescence measurements were employed in the study of meso-tetrakis(4-N-methylpyridinium)porphine (TMPyP) interactions with halfgeneration carboxyl-terminated poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers in water. TMPyP experiences a less polar environment and a strong fluorescence quenching effect upon dendrimer association. The tertiary amine functional groups in PAMAM dendrimers are likely to be responsible for the fluorescence quenching of TMPyP through an electron-transfer mechanism. The Stern-Volmer plots achieve a plateau at high dendrimer concentrations that was attributed to full porphyrin-dendrimer association, and an average fluorescence quantum yield of 15-20% relative to aqueous TMPyP was estimated. The association constant for the 1:1 complex with generation 2.5 at dendrimer-porphyrin ratio D/P) 1 is 5.75 × 10 7 M-1 , indicating a strong binding affinity. The dissociation of the complex with increasing ionic strength reinforces the role of electrostatic forces in porphyrin-dendrimer association. Comparison of Stern-Volmer plots obtained from quantum yields or lifetimes showed the importance of a static effect in these systems. The fluorescence decays of the porphyrin-dendrimer complex were fitted with a dispersed kinetics model. At intermediate dendrimerporphyrin ratios (D/P ≈ 1), diffusional quenching processes between free porphyrin and dendrimer were modeled with the Sano-Tachiya pair survival probability equation. Transient diffusional effects were dismissed as a possible explanation for the static effect detected.

Non-covalent dendrimer?porphyrin interactions: the intermediacy of H-aggregates?Dedicated to the memory of Nobel Laureate, Lord George Porter FRSC FRS OM

At low dendrimer concentrations, the formation of low absorptive/emissive species occurs in these systems. With an increase of dendrimer concentration, the porphyrins rearrange at the dendritic outer shell and the absorption and emission spectra suggest the presence of H-aggregates of TSPP. These aggregates dissociate to yield monomeric complexed species in the limit of high dendrimer concentration, which presents very similar spectra for both generations studied. On the other hand, the emission of the same systems at pH 2 shows significant differences between dendrimer generations. While for generation 2 the fluorescence spectra practically coincide with that of the diacid TSPP and its J-aggregate, for generation 4 the spectra obtained are similar to that at high pH. This was interpreted according to a morphologic transition in PAMAM dendrimers around generation 3, to give a more compact structure, which provides a hydrophobic environment for the associated TSPP. At low pH, an increase in J-aggregation is observed in the dendrimer's presence. Aging effects were observed, in particular for the systems where different aggregated forms of TSPP coexist, showing that for intermediate dendrimer concentrations these are thermodynamically labile systems.

Deswelling and Electrolyte Dissipation in Free Diffusion of Charged PAMAM Dendrimers
The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters, 2014
The diffusion coefficient of charged PAMAM dendrimers was measured by fluorescence correlation sp... more The diffusion coefficient of charged PAMAM dendrimers was measured by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy in aqueous solution at submicromolar concentrations. The solution pH was varied for conditions ranging from a fully charged to neutral charge dendrimer to infer about electrostatic swelling in the dilute regime. The diffusion coefficient of generation G4 increases by as much as 20% between high and low charge conditions due to the combined effects of polyelectrolyte deswelling and loss of electrolyte dissipation. By taking into account the electrolyte dissipation in the friction factor, we have found that the observed deswelling corresponds to a change of hydrodynamic radius between 7-13% for generation G4 and about 12% for generation G7. Simulations of molecular dynamics of dendrimer G4 show that counterion uptake by the dendrimer structure upon full protonation induces a 16% increase of its radius of gyration. The change in dendrimer size is slightly larger than that previously reported from neutron scattering techniques, thereby suggesting that electrostatic swelling is more pronounced at dilute dendrimer concentration and low ionic strength. It is confirmed that even higher generations, which have more congested molecular structures, can experience some degree of conformational change in response to a change of the dendrimer charge density.

The hypothesis of the independent existence of an annona militaris is attributable to Van Berchem 1934 [1937], 143-147, who situates it in the times of Severus. Previously, Lesquier (1918, 349-350), who considered it a tax in kind assigned to the army, had proposed AD 185 as the date of its origin. This view was followed by Cérati (1975, 103-151), for whom it was also a question of a tax assigned to the army, even after Dioclecian. In Remesal's view, (1986, 81-89, 104 and idem, 2002, 82-83), the origin of the annona goes back to Augustan times. Kissel (1995, 123-124) situates it in AD 6-7. Mitthof (1996, 68-70, 79-81) gives AD 284 as the date. On the concept of annona in the Historia Augusta, which led several authors to erroneous conclusions (Chastagnol 1994, CLXV-CLXIX). 2 We follow Remesal's hypothesis: Augustus created the praefectura annonae between AD 8 and 14 as a consequence, on the one hand, of the pressing necessity to control the Roman masses by means of the distribution of free food, a heritage of the late republican dictators of the first century BC, and, on the other hand, a result of the personal experience of having met the cost of obtaining supplies for his personal army during the Civil War. This author also holds that during the early Empire an independent annona militaris did not exist, since a single treasury, the fiscus, was in charge of collecting and paying the resources assigned to both Rome and the army.

Preventing extremisms, taming dissidence: Islamic radicalism and black extremism in the U.S. making of CVE
Critical Studies on Terrorism, 2021
ABSTRACT This article explores the effects of the recent discursive re-articulation of terrorism ... more ABSTRACT This article explores the effects of the recent discursive re-articulation of terrorism into one of violent extremism. To do that, we examine the conditions for the emergence of the “Countering Violent Extremism” (CVE) strategy as a solution to diagnoses of failure in the war on terror. More specifically, we historicise the architecture of counterterrorism in the U.S., revealing the formation of an inside/outside division between agencies engaged with counterterrorism. The two subsequent sections dissect the main discursive pillars of the problematisation of “violent extremism” abroad and inside the U.S. and discuss their main effects on dissidence, stretching from de-legitimation of political agendas to criminalisation of specific social conducts while in protest. The second section exposes how “Islamic radicalism” is at the core of initiatives undertaken abroad through the CVE strategy, and the third section analyses the domestic appropriation of “violent extremism” towards antiracist movements in the U.S. Finally, we show that agencies working either inside or outside the U.S. operate with the same problematisation of “violent extremism” and advance similar practices. We argue that the transnational circulation of such discourse is one of the main veins through which dissidence has been managed both inside and outside the U.S.

This is an ill-posed inverse problem, where the initial condition has to be estimated. Two different artificial neural networks have been applied to address the problem: backpropagation and radial basis functions (RBF). Both approaches use the whole temperature history mapping. In our simulations, RBF presented better solutions, faster training, but higher noise sensitiveness, as compared to backpropagation.
