This essay analyses a strain of modern classicism other than the high modernist classicism of Hul... more This essay analyses a strain of modern classicism other than the high modernist classicism of Hulme, Pound, and Eliot. Its practitioners were middlebrow writers associated with the newspaper columns and ‘smart magazines’ thriving in New York City during the 1910s and 1920s. Led by the columnist, popular poet, and Algonquin Round Table fixture, Franklin P. Adams, ‘smart classicism’ took its inspiration from ancient Rome's elegists, satirists, and epigrammatists. Adams's smart classicist poems complicate current accounts of early twentieth-century American poetry, of modern(ist) classicism, and of the literary legacy of the smart writers and the Round Table. Dorothy Parker's poetic rejoinders to smart classicism re-gender the masculinist speakers and attitudes of Adams's light verse – and the verse of the ancient poets he emulates and translates. Whatever nationalism is, whether ideology, civic religion, popular sentiment, or mass psychosis, ... more Whatever nationalism is, whether ideology, civic religion, popular sentiment, or mass psychosis, its influence on modern society, politics, and art has been profound, perhaps more influential than the political movements of liberalism, fascism, and communism, all of which it underlay, interacted with, and powerfully defined. Whether analysts view nationalism as a beneficial or detrimental historical force, they tend to agree that this potent and multifarious phenomenon warrants sustained and rigorous analysis. The recent burst of academic studies is, in part, the product of that consensus. The current wave of nationalist movements around the globe not only provides powerful additional evidence for this assertion, but also presents interesting difficulties for those who study the topic. The three works under review here provide an opportunity to consider the challenges of analyzing nationalism in what is an increasingly nationalistic moment. In their respective strengths and weaknesses, these books confirm that our efforts to come to terms with nationalism as an historical artifact are always entangled to some extent with our sense of it as a contemporary political problem, and therefore, that we need to find ways of dealing with that entanglement in an honest and productive manner, so that we can elucidate nationalism without unwittingly perpetuating the errors that characterize its history.

This article reads George Herriman's celebrated Krazy Kat comic as an exemplar of popular mod... more This article reads George Herriman's celebrated Krazy Kat comic as an exemplar of popular modernism, a mass cultural product that works from inside a popular medium to make it new. Analyzing specific color comics Herriman produced between 1935 and his death in 1944, the article illuminates the range of techniques Herriman developed over the strip's final decade as he assimilated for the first time the color protocols of the Hearst newspaper syndicate and retooled his comic's layouts, narratives, and style in response. In time, Herriman articulated a late popular modernist aesthetics characterized by formalism, minimalism, and self-reflexivity.

It aims to provide concrete, practical advice on key aspects of teaching undergraduate classes in literature or film: pedagogy; assisting in large classes; managing classes of 40 students; teaching literary or film/media texts; drawing up syllabi; making lesson plans; crafting paper topics. For the first month, we will meet in a large group; the group will then be divided into two smaller sections, which will each meet three more times, on alternate weeks, for workshops on syllabi, lesson plans, and paper topics. REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS: Workshop participants will create and distribute (via email through blackboard) a syllabus, a lesson plan, and a paper assignment, and will read and discuss those created by other participants. Active participation in each workshop session is expected. Attendance is required for credit.
