A digital fountain can encode and transmit an unlimited number of data packets until every user gets enough information to guarantee correct decoding. Multimedia broadcasting, emerging peer-to-peer applications are only two examples of many other scenarios where digital fountains can be successfully applied. In this paper practical implementation issues of two class of digital fountain codes, namely LT and Raptor codes, are analyzed. Moreover, the performance in terms of coding and decoding complexity is measured experimentally.

In the following chapters, work done on allowing to simulate traffic management strategies is presented, starting with vehicle routing and rerouting and followed by the preparation of SUMO traffic lights model and design of traffic light algorithms that use information gained via V2X communication. Then, the extensions done for simulating vehicle movements with time steps below one second and work on allowing the simulation of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are given. Our contribution is twofold: First, we propose a methodology to model and simulate ITS applications with iTETRIS around three main mechanisms: (i) message management with generic open APIs based on subscription/result container mechanisms (ii) data management with the integration of an application facilities layer in the iCS, including a local dynamic map (LDM), (iii) application management with an ITS application simulator including one or more application logics. Second, we apply this methodology to implement the following four ITS applications: dynamic route planning, bus lane management, emergency vehicle, and contextual speed adaptation. We describe their integrations in iTETRIS, including a characterization of their interactions with the iCS, and illustrate the benefits of these ITS applications on traffic efficiency, gasoline consumption, or air pollutant emissions.

The complexity of cooperative ITS systems and the interrelation between its components requires their extensive testing before deployment. The lack of simulation platforms capable to test, with high modelling accuracy, cooperative ITS systems and applications in large scale scenarios triggered the implementation of the EU-funded iTETRIS simulation platform. iTETRIS is a unique open source simulation platform characterized by a modular architecture that allows integrating two widely adopted traffic and wireless simulators, while supporting the implementation of cooperative ITS applications in a language-agnostic fashion. This paper presents in detail the iTETRIS simulation platform, and describes its architecture, standard compliant implementation, operation and new functionalities. Finally, the paper demonstrates iTETRIS large scale cooperative ITS evaluation capabilities through the implementation and evaluation of cooperative traffic congestion detection and bus lane management applications. The detailed description and implemented examples provide valuable information on how to use and exploit iTETRIS simulation potential.

Efficient and robust routing algorithms will play a key role in the success of such technology. In this paper we present TrafRoute, an efficient and robust routing scheme for vehicular networks, suitable for both Vehicle-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure communications. TrafRoute introduces a novel approach to routing that involves landmark-based routes and forwarder self-election, exploiting the knowledge of the underlying road network. We demonstrate TrafRoute's efficiency and robustness through simulation studies performed with accurate mobility and propagation models.

In this paper, we present an overview on the most interesting solutions that have been proposed to perform data dissemination in this environment. Starting from this analysis, we present a novel approach that can efficiently address a reliable communication even in high dynamic networks. The new approach is based on the exploitation of a peculiar characteristic of rateless codes. In particular, the proposed method uses the orthogonality of the encoded sets of symbols generated by different random seeds. In this way, portions of the information can be disseminated even if this has not been decoded yet. In fact, an easy management of the communication of these sets among nodes enhances the reliability of the communication as well as the speed of the information dissemination. In this work, we present the idea of this innovative approach and we provide results that show the advantages of using it over other solutions. II. These codes have significantly lower complexity than Reed-Solomon ones, exhibit high erasure correction performance, and are very well suited to generating multiple equally important descriptions of a source. In this paper we propose an innovative scheme for streaming multimedia contents by using digital fountain codes applied over sliding windows, along with a suitably modified belief-propagation decoder. The use of overlapped windows allows one to have a virtually extended block, which yields superior performance in terms of packet recovery. Simulation results using LT codes show that the proposed algorithm has better performance in terms of efficiency, reliability and memory with respect to fixed-window encoding.

Currently, V2X cooperative systems are under development, forced by both the industry and by the European Commission which supports the development as a part of its Intelligent Car Initiative. Within this publication, "iTETRIS", a new system for simulating V2X-based traffic management applications is described which aims on high-quality simulations of large areas. This is achieved by coupling two well-known open source simulators. The sustainability of the project is guaranteed by making the whole also available as an open source tool.

Data dissemination in vehicular networks has been a challenge due to unpredictable network dynami... more Data dissemination in vehicular networks has been a challenge due to unpredictable network dynamics and channel unreliability. In fact, conventional approaches that rely on TCP or UDP do not perform well and cannot consistently guarantee reliable communications. A potential solution to these problems involves using erasure-correcting codes to make UDP transmissions reliable. However, it is also important to note that, due to vehicular mobility and road obstacles, connections among nodes can be as short as a few seconds. Therefore, in a communication between two nodes, the delay between node discovery and data exchange must be minimized. In this paper we present CORP, a Cooperative Rateless Protocol that exploits the reliability of the rateless coding approach while performing fast and efficient dissemination through cooperating nodes within the network. The use of rateless codes and unicast connections places minimal constraints on the delay between node discovery and data transmission, thus simplifying and rendering feasible the content reliable download even in a highly dynamic scenario. Results from simulations reveal that performance improves as more and more nodes cooperate. In sum, CORP yields important improvements in terms of speed of dissemination when compared to traditional approaches such as TCP.

There are in fact examples, especially in rural communities, of successful satellite based wireless services to offer IP communication and broadband Internet connection to several users. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a novel system for point to point bulk data delivery (e.g. video on demand) using IP over DVB-S and rateless coding of the source data to achieve better performance in terms of data transfer time and especially bit-efficiency. This mechanism will be compared to standard reliable TCP data transfer, and advantages and trade-offs will be illustrated. The discussion is aided by theoretical analysis, NS2 simulations and tests performed over a Linux testbed with real-time traffic.
