To date, much of the research on cohesion has focused on repetition and reference, partly because of the ease of use of automated solutions. Logical relationships and conceptual associations, on the other hand, have been given little attention in previous research. This is perhaps due to the subjective nature of these semantic connections which can vary between people based on many factors such as their background knowledge, their culture, and their language proficiency. However, previous research has shown that conceptual associations in particular may play a large role in the perceived quality of a text, and therefore they are a worthwhile linguistic feature to investigate further. To aid future research in this area, this study attempts to provide a systematic methodology using a network-based approach for the identification and classification of logical relationships and conceptual associations in a text. A pilot study using the developed methodology was conducted on texts from different levels of English graded readers, and results show that the methodology can identify substantial differences in the use of these types of semantic relationships between texts.

However, previous studies on the continuum of the switch between SSE and CSE by Singaporean are very limited. Hence, the aim of this case study is to implement the new Cultural Orientation Model (COM) by Alsagoff as an approach to analyze the conversation of formal and informal situations by focusing on three reflected variables: phonological, morphological and a discourse marker. Result shows that phonological variable of non-standard variant occur more compared to the informal situations, specifically the voiced alveolar stop [d] taking place of voiced dental fricative [ð] in word-initial position. In terms of morphological variable, the uninflected verb form was a complete absence in a formal situation, specifically the deletion of inflectional affixes such the affix '-ed' to denote past tense and the '-ing' affix to denote the progressive form. Lastly, the discourse marker 'like' was more frequent in informal situation. This shows that although CSE is valued in Singapore, the use of SSE by Singaporean is still preferred in formal context to integrate themselves with a global audience. Singaporean appears to negotiate between two opposing macro-cultural orientations by choice: globalist and localist. Result provides qualified support for COM by Alsagoff. Recommendations on utilization and further research are also discussed.

One of the most popular discussions was their concern over their English language skills and the “move-in” country of preference. Since this virtual community is an interesting context to explore, a survey questionnaire was distributed online to know their attitudes toward English as a lingua franca (ELF). To know if Thais' attitude on EFL differs based on their "move-in" country of preference, the participants were categorized based on Kachruvian three concentric circles – Inner, Outer, and Expanding as well as Any circle – a combination of two or more circle. Findings show the strongly favorable attitudes of Thais toward the following aspects - the focus on intelligibility, the use of English to communicate with both native and non-native speakers of English, learning materials ...
