Today, companies are immersed in extremely competitive worldwide markets that change continuously... more Today, companies are immersed in extremely competitive worldwide markets that change continuously. Thus, companies have to evolve introducing strategic and structural changes as a response to the external forces of the environment. This implies to consider the IS alignment from a global point of view integrating the classical "internal" strategic alignment with two other levels: the alignments with the environment and with uncertain evolutions. In this boarder, approaches that support and operationalise IS alignment are numerous but remain fuzzy towards the kind of alignment tackled. Therefore, it is proposed to build an analysis framework taking the global alignment problematic into account. It is composed of four elements and corresponding attributes detailing each aspect of alignment. This framework is applied to nine current alignment approaches in order to get a wide picture of the research in the domain. The corresponding analysis emphasises possible new work perspectives.

Nowadays, there is a tremendous global interest in the biofuels production. However, first genera... more Nowadays, there is a tremendous global interest in the biofuels production. However, first generation biofuels have been debated about that energy-crop compete with food crops and thus cause food deficiency and price increases. In this sense, researchers have started looking for potential feedstock for ethanol such as lignocellulosic biomass (e.g., sugarcane bagasse), which does not affect food security. In this paper, the integrated use of sugarcane bagasse is analyzed as raw material for second generation of biofuels production. This case study implements a design and process integration to compare several biorefinery topologies using the typical mass flow rate of residual biomass produced by the sugar industry (1200 ton per day). Based on evaluation of chemical composition of bagasse (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) several process schemes for integral utilization of biomass were proposed. This paper is the first part of the study on the exergy, life cycle analysis (LCA) and economic analysis of sugarcane bagasse for sustainable biofuels production using Aspen Plus TM software. Part 1 presents the exergy and life cycle analysis developed while part 2 describes economic analysis and selection of an optimal configuration with minimal environmental impact, by means of the combined use of raw material and energy integration.

These rely on technical ISs that enable the integration between the infrastructures and the support of design and production management activities. For them, 'strategic alignment' is crucial for business performance. It exists when the ISs and business goals and activities are in concordance. In the literature, it is often approached from a top managerial point of view, whereas it had also to be managed at an operational level through integration into the upstream phases of the ISs design and development. To succeed in, we propose the Extended-Strategic Alignment Model and an exploitation process. They support the systematic study of the mutual influences between business, information technology and product design or manufacturing. The propositions are illustrated on the part monitoring module of the manufacturing workshop from a real small and medium enterprise.
