Some words in French look like their English equivalents, but they are dissimilar in form and meaning. A lot of French learners and English learners tend to misconstrue the translation equivalents between the two languages. These deceptive cognates often cause confusion in writing, embarrassment in pronunciation and discouragement in executing a language task. This article lays emphasis on the negative effects of cross-linguistic influence from English (acquired language) on French (the target language) through false cognates. It sheds some light on how to curb the cross-linguistic influence of English on the French language acquisition.
