In Mallorca a rarity Long-legged Buzzard Buteo rufinus was sighted during February, March, July and August at Calvià. If accepted by the SEO rarities committee it will be the first for the Balearics. March. The first songs of Savi's Warblers Locustella luscinoides are heard at the S'Albufera. This rarity is now suspected of breeding after the ringing of two juveniles in August and September. Another rarity, a Snow Finch Montifringilla nivalis was seen at the Puig de sa Gubia (Bunyola). At Cabrera the only 3 sightings of Puffin Fratercula artica. In Menorca the first sightings of the year of Meditteranean Shearwater Puffinus mauritanicus/yelkouan belonging to the island's breeding population were seen. The Purple Swamp Hen Porphyrio porphyrio continues it's expansion over the island with a first sighting at the reed beds of Cala en Porter. A Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis was sighted at the Addaia salt flats (Es Mercadal), there are further sightings in Mallorca. April. Two rarities sighted in Mallorca: A Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus at the Albercutx watch tower, and a Red-necked Nightjar Caprimulgus ruficollis found dead at Capdepera. Yellow-legged Gulls Larus michahellis are reported to be preying on Common Swift Apus apus at a roof top colony on a house in Banyalbufar. This year there are only two reports of Red-throated Pipit Anthus cervinus, 1 bird sighted at the Pla de l'Anzell (Vilafranca), and 2 birds seen at the S'Albufera in May. Cabrera remains the best location for the study of migration with 6 rarities amassed during the prenuptial migration: A female Collared Flycatcher Ficedula albicollis; a Red-brested Flycatcher Ficedula parva; a Western Olivaceous Warbler Hippolais opaca; a male Orphean Warbler Sylvia hortensis; a Rüppell's Warbler Sylvia rueppelli, the ringed bird of the year, and if accepted by the SEO Rarities Committee, will be the first for the Balearics; and a Rosy Starling Sturnus roseus. In Menorca a group of 11 Lesser Falcon Falco naumanni were sighted at Lluriac Vell. A Little Crake Porzana parva, a rarity, was seen at the Lluriac i Tirant ponds (Es Mercadal). Another rarity at the Illa de l'Aire, this case a Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca. At the Illa den Colom two Semicollared Flycatchers Ficedula semitorquata were ringed. These rarities if accepted by the SEO Rarities Committee will be the first for Spain. At Conillera a Black Stork Ciconia nigra was sighted. Two Red-backed nightjars Caprimulgus ruficollis were ringed. May. For the third year running 4 pairs of Shoveller Anas clypeata have been found breeding at S'Albufera. The sighting of a compact flock of 33 Storm Petrel Hydrobates pelagicus was notable at Freu de Menorca. Another rarity sighted at Cases Velles (Pollença), this time a Collared Flycatcher Ficedula albicollis. Various sightings of Lesser Falcon Falco naumanni on migration where recorded at Maria de la Salut, there was also a lone sighting at the Pla de Anzell in September. At Conillera the prenuptial migration has seen an important passing of European Nightjar Caprimulgus europeus , especially during the first half of May when 30 birds where trapped and ringed. Highlights of 6 rarities: Two Western Olivaceous Warblers Hippolais opaca, an adult Rufous Bush Robin Cercotrichas galactotes; and a male and female Orphean Warbler Sylvia hortensis. At Formentera one rarity was recorded, a male Orphean Warbler Sylvia hortensis.

Results are shown of the census of Wildfowl and Waders carried out in January 1996 in the islands of Formentera, Eivissa and Mallorca, in 35 different localities. Up to 12.959 birds were counted, belonging to 58 species, what constitutes a record in number of species in relation to previous years.

Informe de 2003. Tretzè informe anual que presenta el Comitè de Rareses Ornitològiques del GOB. S'han homologat 24 registres, corresponents a les espècies següents: pela-roques Tichodroma muraria, homologat per primera vegada; la resta són: cigne mut Cygnus olor, negreta Melanitta nigra, esmerla Falco columbarius, paràsit coaample Stercorarius pomarinus, llambritja becvermell Sterna caspia, bosqueta pàl•lida Hippolais opaca, busqueret emmascarat Sylvia hortensis, busqueret xerraire Sylvia curruca, coaric Aegithalos caudatus, ferrerico petit Parus ater, capsigrany d'esquena roja Lanius collurio, gralla de bec vermell Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax, gorrió d'ala blanca Montifringilla nivalis i hortolà negre Emberiza cia. També hi incloem, 14 observacions a Balears homologades pel Comité de Rarezas de la Sociedad Española de Ornitología (CR-SEO) corresponent a l'informe de 2001, hi destaca una homologació feta per primera vegada a les Balears: l'àguila marina Haliaeetus albicilla. La resta d'observacions són l'oca egípcia Alopochen aegyptiacus, ànnera canyella Tadorna ferruginea, ull de bou reietó Phylloscopus proregulus, el menjamosques de collar Ficedula albicollis, estornell rosat Sturnus roseus, pinsà carminat Carpodacus erythrinus, hortolà petit Emberiza pusilla.
