Olga Caprotti was the Network Manager of the Joining Educational Mathematics, JEM, thematic network and has been project manager of the WebALT, EDC-22253 eContent project. She has been working in technologies for the electronic communication of mathematics since joining the European OpenMath Esprit Project (1997-2000) after graduation in symbolic computation at RISC-Linz. She has substantially contributed to the latest version of the OpenMath language and is one of the editors of the standard. Her interests and competences range from semantic markup and metadata for mathematical documents and interactive e-learning materials, to mathematical web services and interfaces to symbolic computation software. She served as the secretary of the OpenMath Society and as member of the Committee for Electronic Information and Communication of the IMU. Currently in life transit, Caprotti is Chief Scientist of WEPS.

In this paper we present an ongoing effort in the computational linguistic field to develop multi... more In this paper we present an ongoing effort in the computational linguistic field to develop multilingual assistive technologies for mathematics. The approach is based on the Grammatical Framework used in combination with UMCL and semantic encodings of mathematics like OpenMath and MathML3. We review the formats for supporting alternative modalities of presentation of mathematics in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Finally we describe a very initial prototype built using off-the-shelf speech synthesis to interface to the Sage suite of computer algebra systems.

The Web Advanced Learning Technologies project showed how, by applying state of the art language ... more The Web Advanced Learning Technologies project showed how, by applying state of the art language technologies to semantic markup of mathematics, it is possible to automatically produce renderings of mathematical content in a variety of languages. The intended application area of this work is that of computer assisted assessment and testing in mathematics where standardized entry examinations for perspective students could be used independently of country and language. A similar multilingual approach can be developed for any situation in which it is possible to identify a specific mathematical jargon.

Indeed, Open-Math, a markup language for mathematical content, and OmDoc, its extension to mathematical documents, open a way of communicating mathematics between computers, between software applications and over the Internet without losing information. In this paper we describe the latest applications of OpenMath related technologies for Interactive Mathematical Documents. As an example we describe the way we incorporate these new technologies in a new version of Algebra Interactive, an interactive course on first and second year university algebra.

MOLTO targets translation that has production quality, that is, usable for quick and reliable dissemination of information. MOLTO?s main focus is to increase the productivity of such translation systems, building on the technology of GF (Grammatical Framework) and its Resource Grammar Library. But MOLTO also develops hybrid methods which increase the quality of Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) by adding linguistic information, or bootstrap grammatical models from statistical models. This paper gives a brief overview of MOLTO?s latest achievements, many of which are more thoroughly described in separate papers and available as web-based demos and as open-source software.
