It predicts the wind speed and direction at the roof of an previously selected building for the past 10 years using reanalysis data and wind measurements taken over a year. To do so, the reanalysis wind speed data is calibrated against the measurements using different kinds of quantile mapping, and the wind direction is predicted using random forest. A mock-up of a building and a BIWT were used in a wind tunnel to perform a small-scale experiment presented here. It showed that energy production is possible and even enhanced over a wide range of attack angles. The energy production estimations made with the best performing kind of calibration achieved an overall relative error of 6.77% across different scenarios.

They all have comparative advantages and disadvantages, making desirable a better understanding of the relationships between various approaches. Accounting for crown and root morphological plasticity in the limit where equilibrium among neighbors is reached (perfect plasticity) transforms spatial models into nonspatial, distance-independent versions. The links between spatial and nonspatial models obtained through a perfect plasticity assumption are more realistic than ignoring spatial structure by a mean field approximation. This article also reviews the connection between distance-independent models and size distributions and how distributions evolve over time and relate to whole-stand descriptions. In addition, some ways in which stand-level knowledge feeds back into detailed individual-tree formulations are demonstrated. This presentation is intended to be accessible to n...

Parameter estimation, however, currently requires specialized software packages that can be difficult to use and understand. This work develops and demonstrates an approach for estimating reducible SDEs using standard nonlinear least squares or mixed-effects software. Reducible SDEs are obtained through a change of variables in linear SDEs, and are sufficiently flexible for modelling many situations. The approach is based on extending a known technique that converts maximum likelihood estimation for a Gaussian model with a nonlinear transformation of the dependent variable into an equivalent least-squares problem. A similar idea can be used for Bayesian maximum a posteriori estimation. It is shown how to obtain parameter estimates for reducible SDEs containing both process and observation noise, including hierarchical models with either fixed or random group parameters. Code and examples in R are given. Univariate SDEs are discussed in detail, with extensions to the multivariate case outlined more briefly. The use of well tested and familiar standard software should make SDE modelling more transparent and accessible.

Individual-tree models have been commonly used, but the difficulties of reliably scaling from the individual to the stand level are often underestimated. Emergent properties and statistical issues limit their effectiveness. A more holistic modelling of aggregates at the whole stand level is a potentially attractive alternative. This work explores methodology for developing biologically consistent dynamic mixture models where the state is described by aggregate stand-level variables for species or age/size cohorts. The methods are demonstrated and tested with a two-cohort model for spruce-aspen mixtures named SAM. The models combine single-species submodels and submodels for resource partitioning among the cohorts. The partitioning allows for differences in competitive strength among species and size classes, and for complementarity effects. Height growth reduction in suppressed cohorts is also modelled. SAM fits well the available data, and exhibits behaviors consistent with current ecological knowledge. The general framework can be applied to any number of cohorts, and should be useful as a basis for modelling other mixed-species or uneven-aged stands.

Design This study was a retrospective chart review. Setting This study was conducted at a tertiary care center. Participants The study group consisted of 68 patients with transsphenoidal surgeries between January 2007 and January 2014. Main Outcome Measures Two-sample t-tests and Pearson's chi-square test evaluated inpatient costs, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), volumetric EOR, and neurological outcomes. Results Total inpatient costs per patient was $22,853 in the microscopic group and less ($19,736) in the endoscopic group (p ¼ 0.049). Operating room costs were $5,974 in the microscopic group and lower in the endoscopic group ($5,045; p ¼ 0.038). Operative time was 203.6 minutes in the microscopic group and 166.3 minutes in the endoscopic group (p ¼ 0.032). The QALY score, length of hospital stay, and postoperative outcomes were found to be similar between the two cohorts. Multivariate linear regression modeling suggested that length of stay (p < 0.001) and operative time (p ¼ 0.008) were important factors that influenced total inpatient costs following transsphenoidal surgery. Conclusion This study shows that transsphenoidal surgery is more cost effective with the endoscopic approach than with the microscopic approach and depends on efficiency in the operating room as well as reduction in the length of hospitalization.

EnglishWe are in a media culture and we participate actively or passively in the society that is built by stimuli with little or absent understanding that culture can structure the reality as well to guide or condition the learning, but also attracts interest or sensitizes students to create a culture of image. For the students the video is a common manifestation, as a resource that is very versatile as it is as an information medium, as a research tool as a means of expression as a means of evaluating, motivating, informative or entertaining, and so on. Intention to use as a learning strategy video-creation is not to analyze a video, is that students live the experience of creating meaning by using the synchrony of the auditory image, according to a program guide structured pursuing clear objectives for their effective assessment. It had the experience of implementing this resource, documenting their development and the relevance of this strategy, which enabled it to assess their importance and effectiveness in the course of artistic appreciation, and exposing the development of skills satisfactorily in the course, but there are circumstances that need to be adapted according to the unique characteristics of each group where they intend to use this strategic resource for learning.

Philosophy of culture can not ignore in its researches natural science. Science is a kind of culture and it makes it necessary to think about culture as knowledge. In this paper we will pay our attention to the analysis of the relationship between humanities and natural science in one hand, and between humanities and philosophy in the other hand. This will come to the conclusion that philosophy is not a part of humanities or,in the case it was, it will be a part of humanities the same way as mathemathics or physics are. We will ask for the inclussion of natural science contents into a new way of doing philosopy, which make it possible to deal with the landscape given by natural science. In the end, we will make some reflections on the new curricula at university

As the importance of each of them as the fact whether all of them are necessary will be analyzed. Besides, we will introduce a new algorithm called Best-Worst Ant Colony System by combining the basis of the Ant Colony System with the special components of the BWAS. The performance of different variants of these algorithms will be tested when solving different instances of the QAP.

In movement: New players in the construction of democracy in Spain, 1962–1977
Political Power and Social Theory, 2009

This approach forms the basis of the most widespread interpretation of Spain's transition to democracy as a work of top-down political engineering. However, this scholarship fails to pay sufficient attention to the capacity for agency of civil society and both “old” and “new” social movements. In fact, although there is no doubt that democracy arrived in Spain by means of a negotiated transition, it must not be forgotten that the pacts among elites were influenced, as is demonstrated here, by relentless social pressure among highly organised collective actors, including the Communist Party. This paper shows that protests by this organisation and other collective actors in the most socioeconomically underdeveloped provinces of Spain, most of which have been ignored by the most influential scholarship on the transition, were vitally important in the negotiated path to democracy. As such, it investigates the relationship between social unrest and political change through the study of provinces which, a priori, were considered to be socially and politically inactive. This analysis of popular mobilisation in poor and politically marginalised provinces enables a deeper theoretical and empirical understanding of the dynamics from below, which were fundamental in Spain's transition process.

In this sense, Ambient Intelligence (AmI) has emerged as a new discipline focused on people and aimed at facilitating their daily activities. This paper proposes a new definition model that helps designers to characterize collaborative e-learning systems based on AmI and Computer Supported Collaborative Learning. The use of mobile devices and Mobile Adhoc Networks is a key aspect in this model as they allow users to access resources from anywhere on demand. The proposed model is applied to a concrete case of study as an example of its application on real scenarios.

The performance of this multiplex system has been evaluated not only on ancient bone remains (5000-4000 BP) but also on different forensic samples with highly degraded DNA (bone remains, hair shafts,. . .) that yielded negative PCR results with the mtDNA amplification strategies usually employed in forensic genetics. The multiplex-PCR methodology described in this study also illustrates a potential high throughput strategy to reconstruct the sequence of both coding and non-coding regions of the mtDNA genome from ancient DNA.
