Olena Kasian
I am Olena Kasian, a PhD candidate in Economy at Sumy State University, deeply immersed in the study of tourism development and its evolution in Ukraine, especially in the context of post-war reconstruction. My current PhD research is centered on the pivotal role of digital technologies and ecologically sustainable practices in managing Ukraine's small and medium-sized tourism enterprises. A key aspect of my research involves developing a tourism marketplace. This platform is not just a tool for enhancing the visibility and accessibility of these enterprises, but also serves as a critical instrument for analyzing market trends and assessing the impact of the ongoing conflict on Ukraine's tourism sector. Amidst the challenging times in Ukraine, our research also includes conducting surveys with our marketplace partners to gauge the primary challenges faced by the tourism sector. This involves exploring survival strategies for tourism businesses during the war, identifying sustainable development needs and opportunities, and fostering the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises in this crucial industry. I am eager to share insights, collaborate, and engage in discussions with fellow researchers and practitioners in this field. Your thoughts, feedback, and perspectives would be immensely valuable to me.My academic journey, enriched by my travels to 24 countries, has offered me diverse perspectives, shaping my research interests towards the integration of digital technologies and ecological sustainability in tourism. In 2023, I had the privilege of securing a grant from the Jean Monnet Programme, funded by Erasmus , for a pioneering project titled "European Practices of Green Tourism and Its Transformation in the Post-War Reconstruction of Ukraine." This project delves into the application of European green tourism models in Ukraine, evaluating their role in the country’s recovery and growth. In my teaching role, I lead a course titled "Digitalization of Green Tourism: European Experience," aimed at imparting comprehensive knowledge about sustainable tourism practices in Europe to my students. This course reflects my commitment to integrating academic insights with practical applications in the field of sustainable tourism.
