A philosopher is a participant in a discipline, namely, the broad discipline of philosophy, and, ... more A philosopher is a participant in a discipline, namely, the broad discipline of philosophy, and, where their 'participation' is enacted through a mix of modes that are either passive, active and/or engaged in orientation, and, where they are seen to act either as a professional and/or as an amateur. I would like to argue that without such 'participation' there can be no considerations of 'philosophical competence' as a form of 'disciplinarian competence'. 1 Moreover, I would also like to argue that competence needs to come with 'comprehension' in order to address anomalies that appear to fall outside the sphere of a merely formulated set of responses where such participants can then re(-)explore what is possible, what is impossible and where certain less determinant possibilities must be re-qualified. Furthermore, such 'comprehension' must be 'comprehensive', i.e., systematically open and not systematically closed; operating in a process that seeks increased degrees of integration through either economic, semantic and/or philosophical forms of complexification, etc. That a balanced approached to these four headings 2 of 'participation, competence, comprehension and comprehensiveness' is a prerequisite for the philosopher who automatically enters a first division and who aspires to successfully criticize an exponent with second divisional pretensions. Preamble Given that it would appear that some Australians can be redefined or ignored both historically and geographically does being Australian, therefore, come in gradations of officially declared 'authenticity'? Witness the ignoring of an indigenous 'Voice' and the recent stranding of 'Australians' in India and overseas in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, along with a disvaluation 1 of the unemployed, workers on a Visa, international students, the homeless, and so on!? 2 In such a broad topic can we discern certain trends and to what extent is political motivation driving such processes of disvaluation if not devaluation? In the midst of this current crisis the following three things I have found distressing to think ... more In the midst of this current crisis the following three things I have found distressing to think about, and, prompted me to urgently write these two papers on this topic of COVID-19 titled: ReArranging the Deckchairs… Whilst Staring into the Abyss..!? (0) The sight of seeing people lining up at the local Centerlink, on more than one occasion, is an image that considerably saddens me since I also know there will be more people inside, and, this occurrence is being repeated outside every Centerlink across the country. It directly expresses the point that this crisis is not just a health crisis and the sooner we get through the same the better it will be for those, e.g., who once had employment and now find themselves without the same, and so on. (1) The second point is the hearing of a certain political leader express their ignorance as to how they were going to lead us out of this crisis. Of course, it would be fool to state a date, and, alas, a number of political leaders fall into that callous category. I have not named and shamed this politician because what this person said has been said by many politicians of all persuasions. How can we deliver a very radical raft of policies if there is no envisaged trajectory, right or wrong, to frame the enactment of those political instruments? (2) The third point I find acutely distressing, on reflection, is that if our hospital systems were to be overwhelmed the ensuing mortality rate would unnecessarily be amplified. The dying would die suffering, without too much dignity, and, more or less, alone, despite being on a field of carnage; and, the intense personal sadness that would be left behind is too hard to contemplate let alone imagine… 1 (3) As philosophers, we also need to get ourselves engaged with this world of the other and proffer our skills and insights, to the extent that we can, in order to help other people… along with those people more politically influential, hopefully, who can find a speedier resolution of this crisis. Hence my invitation to workshop the provisional ideas put together in these two short papers… and have such ensuing ideas go viral…? (4) Some background behind my interest in 'policies'. (5) I have had a long interest in political issues but my philosophical preoccupation has been in the field of epistemology and allied topics. But, how can a philosopher be 'engaged' without expressing their thoughts in this field of the political? To this end, I recently wrote a small volume of eight essays on that topic. 2 I then noted that political practice is realized economically in the market place. In this meta-paper I would like to explore some of my presuppositions underpinning my short paper... more In this meta-paper I would like to explore some of my presuppositions underpinning my short paper titled: ReArranging the Deckchairs… Whilst Staring into the Abyss..!? where I offer my philosophical perspective on the current COVID-19 pandemic in Australia; and where I proffer my take on what would be a set of policies seeking best practice in view of the various innovations being worked through worldwide. I am doing this primarily from a philosophical point of view and this presentation also should be viewed through that same lens. (0) While listening to a recent press briefing of a certain Prime Minister I do not wish to name I was appalled to hear them say that they had no idea how they were going to get out of this crisis. Admittedly, it would be a foolish person, and there are many, who would like to put a date on ending this necessary lockdown, whose advent, undoubtedly, we must wait and hope would occur as soon as possible. However, how can you adopt any sensible political position, and oversee a suitable set of policies, if no reasonably planned trajectory is also outlined and taken into account as to how we confront this crisis, effectively deal with this emergency, and, then, extricate ourselves from its midst? Unfortunately, this observation seems to apply to many so-called world leaders. There is much talk about flattening 'the curve'; this exponential growth in the number of people being infected by this virus, but, no clear message as to why we are doing this and how this measure is but one necessary step on a path to overseeing our relatively successful extrication from this pandemic. As in many things on the political stage, there is all too often a shortage of vision and planning over the longer-term. (1) There are a number of ways we can deal with this crisis. Although, basically, at this moment in time, we only have two approaches. We could either ignore its advent and downplay its import as exemplified, e.g., by President Trump, and, in this same vein insist that the governments around the world are doing far too much. Or, assume that lockdown is the way to go and only argue over the speed, degree and details along with the ramifications and political-economic measures needed to address the consequences of this rather radical and novel way to live and love in this time of plague. (2) Why lockdown? And, even more importantly, how do we extricate ourselves from this state of affairs and reanimate our economies? (3) For convenience let us assume this new way of living our lives has a beginning, a middle and an end.
