It comprises contributions from two political geographers, a military geographer, a political scientist, and two activist cartographers and argues that there is not so much a need to ''rethink'' maps, but to ''re-engage'' with the material practices of mapping, and above all to ''re-make'' maps.

Compared to other branches of the social sciences, political science has been among the most resistant to feminist analysis. Political science scholarship generally is divided into four main subfields: political theory, American politics, comparative politics, and international relations. There are great disparities between these areas in the types and amount of gender scholarship that has been done. While feminist theory has become an accepted part of political theory, it has had a more limited impact in the other areas. Furthermore, where gender scholarship has appeared, it is often guided by intellectually conservative epistemological and methodological assumptions. Focusing on current major themes and significant works in the discipline, this article explores the differences in gender scholarship between subfields.

The Democratic Party in the United States, like other left-leaning parties around the world, is s... more The Democratic Party in the United States, like other left-leaning parties around the world, is struggling to counter the rise of right-wing populism. The premise of this symposium is that the party's challenges have deep historical roots and are problems of modern liberal governance more generally. Despite their different perspectives on the sources of, and their different solutions for, the Democratic Party's difficulties, the essays are united in arguing that a more robust, substantive public philosophy is needed to generate a governing majority.
Although Democrats reject the Republican Party's exclusionary definition of America, they nonethe... more Although Democrats reject the Republican Party's exclusionary definition of America, they nonetheless struggle to articulate an alternative vision of national community capable of mobilizing a governing majority around a national program. I explore the challenge of national identity and national purpose for the Democratic Party-and the country-by finding sources for it in features of America's creedal identity, but also in twentieth-century party developments and governing choices. Blurring the meaning of key terms of the party's public philosophy and national liberal identity, embracing administrative expertise as well as party and interest pluralism, and relying on procedural solutions to escape value differences between coalitional partners, the history of choices made by the Democratic Party has left it ill-equipped to persuade voters that it has a singular, substantive vision of national community that acknowledges, and yet unites, citizens across their diverse concerns and aspirations.
