This chapter features the oncology care in the UAE, features the crucial oncology care aspects that have the potential for growth in the UAE, making the UAE a desirable and attractive destination for medical tourism for oncology treatment.

This chapter covers the oncology care in the UAE, and highlights the potential for growth in oncology care in the UAE, making the UAE an attractive location for medical tourism for oncology care.

world, is facing a significant challen... more The United Arab Emirates (UAE), along with the rest of the world, is facing a significant challenge in mitigating the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the resulting pressure on frontline healthcare staff. At the time of writing, the worldwide total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has exceeded 5 million with thankfully only a fraction of these (~37000) in the UAE. However, what is frightening many at this time is that so many of these patients did not survive. With access to 24-hour news and daily reports of worldwide mortality figures, not since the Second World War we have been reminded of our own mortality and the fragility of life in such a sustained manner.

Numerous cancer patients from non-Western countries, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), seek cancer care outside their home countries and many are sponsored by their governments for treatment. Many patients interrupted their cancer treatment abruptly and so returned to their home countries with unique challenges. In this review we will discuss practical challenges and recommendations for all cancer patients returning to their home countries from treatment abroad. Method Experts from medical, surgical and other cancer subspecialties in the UAE were invited to form a taskforce to address challenges and propose recommendations for patients returning home from abroad after medical tourism during the SARS-COV-19 Pandemic. Results The taskforce which consisted of experts from medical oncology, hematology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, radiology and palliative care summarized the current challeng...
