For the analysis of adverse effects of car ownership on transport mode choice, the comparison between the patterns of mode choices in the past with current situation was studied. The transport mode choice was calibrated using a Logit model; it combines different characteristics of the alternatives and individual socioeconomic variables in a meaningful way to calculate a utility value. The model requires data of zones, choice data of travelling mode and the selected mode attributes. Trans Cad was used to calibrate the utility functions, MNL analysis in Trans Cad is used to develop the model. The travelling modes used in the study area are private mode (car) and public mode (bus). The level of service variables (In-vehicle travel time, cost) and socioeconomic variables (auto ownership, income) are used. After calibration of the split model, the process of validation is achieved by comparing field measured modal split of traffic volumes with estimated split results of the model. The results show that a higher share of public transport in the past, while in 2014, it appears that the share of auto is higher. Through these results, it finds that public transport must be given the utmost importance in order to provide a sustainable environment in the region.

One of the important inputs to the transportation planning process is the Origin – Destination Matrix. The O-D matrix is the travel demand between the pair of origin and destination zones and is one of the necessary goals of transportation studies. Estimation of an O-D matrix using the conventional process requires the collection of a huge amount of data. In Baghdad city, there has been no O-D matrix formulated. Accordingly, a prior O-D matrix is estimated in this study. The present research methodology is based on the estimated O-D matrix for Baghdad city in 1987 (prior matrix) and then updated to 2014 using the collected traffic count data as the basis for travel forecasting. The results of this study provide a guide to the local transportation agencies to select the right transport policies, maximize th...
Route planning analysis in Geographical Information System (GIS) provides strong decision support... more Route planning analysis in Geographical Information System (GIS) provides strong decision support for users in searching optimal route, finding the optimal path is an important advanced analysis function in GIS. This paper presents the problem of selecting route to connect two locations in Baghdad city; Alkadomiyah and Algria'at. Four alternatives were investigated using a multi criteria approach and spatial decision support system, (SDSS) that will assist a decision-maker, to select the optimal route for a new road path. In ARCGIS 9.2, spatial analysis has been used to carry out the search strategy. In general, the goal of this study is to develop a (GIS) -based model to determine suitable route. Therefore, the required data for the proposed model building were identified by using, land use, transportation maps, aerial photographs and demographic features then reviewed for model development requirements. Four factors were considered; Geotechnical, Geometrical, social and economical factors for multicriteria evaluation to select the best route alternative. ARC GIS 9.2 software was used for the analysis and model building requirements. In actualizing the aim, satellite images of the study area was provided while the land-use map was obtained from Design Office-Amanat Baghdad. The land-use over the study area was classified into eight different classes. A Digital Elevated Model (DEM) over the study area was
