It is shown that there exists a definite value for the width of the aperture that gives, the minimum error in Doppler temperature measurements when instrumental parameters and the width of the source profiles are given. The effects caused by the imperfections of the MZA are analyzed. The successful use of an MZA with a 15-cm (6-in.) Fabry-Perot interferometer for measurement of an airglow emission line is described.
A new silicon deformable mirror design is presented which provides high reflectivity, an optical ... more A new silicon deformable mirror design is presented which provides high reflectivity, an optical quality continuous surface, and high intensity handling capacity. Its features make it useful for a wide range of devices including telescopes, leasers, and photolithographic systems. The mirror architecture is similar to commercial electrostrictive deformable mirrors. A focus corrector built using this architecture exhibited 2.25 microns of actuation at the center through the application of 100v corresponding to a radius of curvature of -2.4m. A 30 micrometers thick 1cm diameter silicon mirrors exhibited its first mechanical resonance at 2.7kHz. A mirror coated with 100nm of gold was shown to be able to withstand 100kW/cm(superscript 2) of continuous wave 1064nm intensity for 10 minutes without observable degradation. An active mode-matching experiment was performed showing that 99.5 percent of a Nd:YAG beam could be coupled to a finesse 4000 ring cavity.

Using a Shack-Hartmann wave-front detector, thermal lensing in these materials may be measured. Then, the absorption coefficient may be estimated by fitting the observed deformation to a thermal lensing model based on the temperature dependences of the refractive index and the thermal expansion coefficient. For a particular sample of fused silica, the absorption coefficient was determined to be 1.8 +/- 0.4 × 10-5 cm-1. Obtaining this result requires a resolution in the optical path length better than +/-0.1 nm.
