TWIP alloys are becoming increasingly attractive for remarkable combination of strength and ductility. EAC of a high-manganese TWIP steel was investigated in a passivating environment, to understand the combined role of the frequent localized deformation due to dynamic twinning and quick establishment of surface oxide layer. Here, we show a new mechanism where localized formation of twin bands facilitates EAC.

EAC of a high-manganese TWIP steel was investigated, using aqueous solutions of different pH, which provided a mechanistic insight into the combined role of the localized deformation due to twinning and the electrochemical characteristic of the steel. Slow strain rate testing in inert environment as well as in acidic, neutral and alkaline solutions, and the fractography of the failed specimens have suggested a profound role of twinning in EAC crack propagation.

In the present study, susceptibility of a high manganese TWIP steel to stress corrosion cracking ... more In the present study, susceptibility of a high manganese TWIP steel to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in a 3.5% NaCl solution was investigated using slow strain rate tests (SSRT), constant load (CL) tests and fractography. Strain rates employed for SSRT were in the range of 10 -06 -10 -08 s -1 . The specimens tested in air revealed a ductile type of failure, whereas those tested in the corrosive solution exhibited a brittle feature that is attributed to stress corrosion cracking. SCC was observed at a relatively low strain rate of 10 -07 s -1 .
