The Global Partnership on Foreign Aid for Sustainable Development

It starts with an illustrative theoretical growth model where foreign aid promotes sustainable development by protecting the environment. Using factor analysis and newly developed estimation methods for a dynamic panel data model with endogenous regressors, the empirical section of the chapter finds evidence that foreign aid has had a significantly positive influence on sustainable development in aid recipient countries. This effect is very likely to go through channels related to growth and resources as well as a technology channel with respect to energy intensity. This research has important implications in the 2030 development agenda for international collective action with regard to a sustainable future.

Of particular interest is the phenomenon of e-government, where debates and information surrounding local government matters are conducted in cyberspace. Of relevance also, are the networking opportunities that the Internet

The analytical framework posited is a simple two-factor, two-commodity, two-class general equilibrium model that makes a distinction between traded and non-traded goods. The principal aim is to collect and synthesize the wellknown results in the literature, derived from diverse analytical frameworks, as well as to establish a number of new ones. It is shown that pure emigration can be beneficial to the non-emigrants in the source country, irrespective of the welfare criteria adopted, if accompanied by sufficient remittances. The paper also highlights the fact that emigation does not affect all classes in society symmetrically. The division of losers and gainers depends on the volume of remittances, the distribution of factor endowments and the type of emigration. * The author is indebted to two anonymous referees and the managing editors of the journal for helpful comments and encouragement. The views and opinions expressed in the paper are personal and not those of the Asian Development Bank. The assistance of Zenaida Acacio, Ma. Lourdes Antonio, Marithel Abad Santos and Rose Reusi in processing the paper is gratefully acknowledged.

The principal element of this strategy has been to provide basic education and health to a wider segment of society. This strategy helped these countries achieve rapid growth through labor-intensive manufacturing on one hand and ensure equitable distribution in society on the other. However, these countries are confronted with new human resource challenges as they ...

First, the concept of social capital remains largely elusive, with many different ideas attached to it. This elusiveness has serious ramifications for empirical and policy analysis. Second, while the concept of social capital is used to highlight the positive, productive aspects of sociability, it fails in important ways to qualify as a form of capital. Third, there are both theoretical and empirical ...

This review suggests that the basic impetus for poverty reduction was robust economic growth, which was fostered by a conducive policy and institutional framework. This framework-which helped to create a'level playing field'-encouraged high investment, production over diversion, and efficient use of investable resources

In doing so, it estimates the levels of absolute poverty for a panel of over forty developing countries and then utilizes fixed effects and GMM-IV estimators to derive the empirical relationships. The principal empirical results that emerge from this exercise indicate that important indicators of economic freedom such as openness to trade and small size of the government are robustly associated with poverty reduction. Labor market flexibility, which ...

In this courageous effort, the book presents both strong and weak points. The book's strong points are: 1) to recognize the complexity of the problem; 2) to emphasize the importance of vocational factors in immigration; 3) to demand the interaction of personal and social factors for a clear understanding; and 4) to emphasize practical applications. The weak points are: 1) to ignore the ecocultural models that have long been matching personal and social factors particularly the work of John Berry at Queens University and Marshall Segall at Syracuse University; 2) to leave large conceptual and research gaps in reviewing the literature; 3) to focus almost entirely on dissonance theory as a basis; and 4) to become polemical at times rather than objective. There are hundreds ofexcellent hypotheses and ideas for further research on immigration/emigration suggested by the book but none of these are drawn out by Krau. The book integrates references from the social sciences, literature and political science without integrating this interdisciplinary selection, which is confusing to the reader. The graph/math computer models, such as those on pages 83-84, are intriguing but not developed or adequately integrated into the other materials. The presentation of a "predictive model ofthe emigration decision" on page 47 is certainly important, and the eight factors Krau identifies are exciting to consider. The book does a betterjob ofraising questions and suggesting future research directions than in completing the originally designated task. While the difficulties of the melting pot hypothesis are acknowledged, there is animplicit judgment that this perspective would work if

We find that the poverty-growth linkage is strongest in East Asia and that this linkage is essentially driven by growth in the industrial sector. By contrast, industrial growth has had little positive impact on poverty reduction in any other region. These findings are consistent with the notion that East Asia's greater success in poverty reduction lies in ...

It starts with a theoretical model where sustainable development is modelled as a different kind of growth that protects the environment and promotes social development. With annul data for a sample of 70 countries over the period of 1985-2010 this research empirically investigates this effect and the potential channels through which the effect takes place. Using factor analysis and ...
