The aim of the theoretical investigation is to overview the concept of social work education as facilitated by service-learning to develop social work competencies in university students. The contribution of service-learning in delivering social work education curricula usually emphasises the development of core competencies and values in social work students, prospective professionals. The contemporary challenges, expectations and contextual demands are set for the social work profession both globally and locally. Therefore, the present research attempts to explore how the two concepts are bridged to meet for the development of social work competencies in university students and shares the insights on the implementation of this pedagogical approach in academic and broader community contexts.

However, the use of abridged, modified, simplified fiction texts as reader materials to facilitate the linguistic progress of a learner may neglect other valuable aspects of the original text. The paper examines a Macmillan Reader (2009) based on Helen Fielding's novel "Bridget Jones's Diary" (2001, first published in 1996) comparing the modified version retold by Anne Collins, qualified as an intermediate-level reader intended for the development of linguistic skills with the original Fielding's novel. In the analysis, attention is focused on the literary genre and characteristic features as well as the message that the popular postfeminist story sends in the modified text in comparison to the established chick lit formula, especially as represented by the foundational Bridget Jones series. Evaluation of paratextual elements of the reader, i.e. points for understanding, glossary, exercises, recorded materials on two CDs, are dealt with, too. The research also refers to some methodological observations on reading literature in class proposed by Susanne Reichl (2009). The paper provides some insights concerning the use of fixtion texts in foreign language teaching and learning grounding on the results of the comparative research of the two texts mentioned above.

This article discusses the two aspects of reading the literary didactic text of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, namely, the didactic aspect, and that based on the theory of reader's reception. These two aspects reveal the two paradigms of reading the didactic text: (1) based on the author's intention and (2) a glance at creative work by the eyes of modern reader
