Certainly all entities need to adapt Energy Conservation and Management Strategies. This is due to high monthly consumption of energy; energy bills of Saudi telecom exchange buildings are a good example. To improve energy savings of such installations, it is necessary to either provide well designed new buildings, or enhance existing buildings with more energy saving strategy practices. This paper investigates the impact of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system characteristics, designed spaces of buildings, operational strategies, the impact of envelope thermal characteristics and energy conservation measures. These measures are classified under three types; i.e. zero-investment, low-investment and high-investment energy conservation measures. The study shows that the energy conservation measures (ECMs) pertaining to the HVAC system characteristics and operation represent the highest potential for energy reduction. Attention should be given to window thermal and solar radiation characteristics, when large window areas are used. The type of glazing system needs to be carefully considered in the early design phase of future buildings. The HVAC set points to provide optimal operation of telecom devices in the exchange center. The Paper presents the thermal optimization of centers of different size in the hot-arid regions, Saudi Arabian city of Al Khobar, eastern province and the effect of adding wall and roof insulation on cooling energy is evident. Also the total reduction of around 3-20% is obtained by applying both wall and roof insulation.

Steel factories are one of the largest energy consumers in the local electric utilities networks ... more Steel factories are one of the largest energy consumers in the local electric utilities networks which make them contribute significantly to the fluctuation in quality of the power supplied. The power quality characteristics of the electric load are critical for the industrial sector to ensure an economic continuity of production lines and being connected to a sustainable and resilient electrical network. This paper summarizes the different types of electric network disturbances, the methods of compensating power losses, and electrical interruption costs of steel factories operations. In the presented work, it has been observed that introducing compensation devices such as SVCs can recover the power losses in the network incurred with respect to steel factory connection. The losses in production lines additional to the cost of disturbance occurring in the system are also calculated in Saudi Riyals ($1 = SAR3.75) for one year under the best estimate condition. It has been found that ...

The work in this study is a complementary part of what's discussed. In this study, we propose a software tool to simulate and evaluate the six evaluation metrics presented for non-deterministic wireless sensor network in which are: Scalability, Key Connectivity, Memory complexity, Communication complexity, Power Consumption and Confidentiality. The evaluation metrics were simulated as well as evaluated to help the network designer choosing the best probabilistic security key management algorithm for certain randomly distributed sensory network.

The induction of Electromagnetic Fields that are generated through the interaction of high-voltag... more The induction of Electromagnetic Fields that are generated through the interaction of high-voltage transmission lines with neighboring buried metallic pipelines produce uncontrolled hazardous potential voltages, which can infringe safety limits. The paper presents the findings of the electromagnetic interference effects on water buried pipelines constructed within the vicinity of an Extra High-Voltage 380 kV transmission overhead line (OHL) in Riyadh-Salboukh route within the Saudi national grid power network. The presented case study showed that some segments of the buried pipelines under this line have not experienced voltages that exceeded the standard limits for the steady-state condition. However, in the event of L-G fault currents (short circuits), the pipelines experienced a voltage level that is above the local electric utility safety limits. Therefore, the work produced implemented the mitigation method of gradient control wires to reduce the potential voltages experienced by the pipelines to enforce the safety limit. The variation of wire resistance has been proven to be a feasible solution to reduce the excessive induced voltages. The comparison has shown that a 0.1 Ω is sufficient to maintain the safe limit for at least this line. These findings may vary depending on the OHL design and site topology.

The distinction comes from its unique ability to provide synchronized phasor measurements of voltages and currents from highly spread power system network. This paper investigates the impact of changing PMUs' locations in State Estimation (SE) accuracy, using weighted least square state estimation technique. IEEE standard systems in addition, to case study systems depicted from the Saudi power system are utilized to verify the results.

A comprehensive survey of the renewable energy resources in Saudi Arabia is presented in this paper. A review of the global electricity storage systems has been conducted to select the best storage system to be implemented with the new establishment of many solar and wind plants in the Kingdom. The study aims to suggest the best storage systems that can be used to store the power generated from renewable energy resources in Saudi Arabia. Even though, the survey covered all the available energy storage technologies, only the mature well-developed storage technologies are presented in this paper. Recommendations were made for the best technologies to be used to store electricity produced from renewable energy in Saudi Arabia.

A considerable issue of controlling such equipment will efficiently manage the energy in order to save more of the exploited electricity. Lately, the National Institute of Standards and Technology issued processing standards to direct the researcher’s attention to Power Line communication (PLC) which is considered as one of the most important schemes of communications over AC power line. Several methods of communication over a power line have been proposed and realized such as X-10 and CE bus and applied very profitably to help in energy management for both customer and utility. In this paper, Power Line Modem (PLM-1) and Smart Meter methods are proposed and presented as to provide a reliable communication and allows designing more cost-effective PLC transceivers to serve managing energy at home and elsewhere.
