The current research was guided by the question, BWhat could be the types of dream characters' involvement and range of their relational capacities in non-lucid problem-solving dreams?^In this study, 979 cross-cultural operationally defined problemsolving dreams were analyzed by the method of grounded theory for the dream characters' participation and input into solutions and their relational skills, capacities, and abilities. The analysis yielded 56 exemplary dreams ranging from dreamers' longing for characters and recalling helpful character, to their involvement in family dynamics, characters' experiences of problems, joint problematic experiences, and characters' helpful use of capacities and instigation of problems for the dreamer. Discussion revolves about dream characters' absence and recalled presence. In the subsequent article, the author will present additional results, conclude the discussion, and include limitations of study and suggestions for future research. Keywords Dream characters' involvement and capacities. Non-lucid problem-solving dreams. Grounded theory method Author Note The precursor of the present article entitled BReview of Varieties of Dream Characters' Presence in Non-lucid Dreams(Kozmová 2017a) has been published in Activitas Nervosa Superior, 59(2), 37-42 and it preceded the present research. The present paper focuses on presentation of results of the study in which the present author investigated types and range of dream characters' involvement and their relational capacities in non-lucid problem-solving dreams. The author presented the results of this research at the conference titled Harvard

The current study investigated emotions as part of a core variable of the problem-solving phenomenon. 979 dreams were analyzed by the method of grounded theory with questions applied through constant comparative analysis to individual instances of dreamers' problem solving. The 29 dreams yielded represent the core variable with 86 diff erent components of cognitive and psychological processes accompanied by dreamers' emotional awareness in emotional signaling, stimulating, self-regulating, or action prompting or preventing roles. The critical emotional awareness during eff orts to resolve diffi cult situations alerts dreamers and allows them to shift from being a passive recipient in the mode of primary consciousness with simple awareness of emotions into the active initiatory and participatory mode of secondary consciousness in which dreamers enrich their problem-solving efforts by refl ective and intellectual abstract analyses. These mental eff orts are considered an adaptive, self-organizing, goal-oriented process. Future isomorphically based prospective investigations of problem-solving dreams could focus on neural correlates of emotional awareness as a critical component of nonlucid dreamers' capacities to use secondary consciousness.

The 979 cross-cultural operationally defined problem-solving dreams were analyzed by the method of grounded theory. The analysis of individual occurrences of problem-solving behaviors and actions as volition-based executive skills (ego executive capacity) in addition to other types of cognitions, yielded a total of exemplary 54 dreams with contexts of self-preservation, intrapersonal situations, and interpersonal relationships. The initial emergent cross-state characterization of volition in non-lucid problem-solving dreams calls for reappraisal of neurophysiological theories that did not yet consider the existe...
