This paper introduces an approach of enhancing tourism web sites, giving the ability for such sit... more This paper introduces an approach of enhancing tourism web sites, giving the ability for such sites to be used as a tool to allow tourists to tag content of choice for downloading and viewing on their own mobile device whilst on visit. Tourists, upon installation to their mobile device, can view content material and a map of Mytilene (Lesvos, Greece) without the need to "connect" to any mobile operator network, thereby saving high roaming charges. Our case-study has been the design and implementation of a Multi-Platform Mobile Tourist Guide system for the Municipality of Mytilene (Greece), which uses a thin PC client via Internet to present tourist content giving the user the opportunity to select content of choice and the ability to dynamically build a thick client mobile tourist application or use the PDA Installation available at the Municipal tourist office.

The authors' approach considers selected places of interest that a traveller would potentially wish to visit and derives a near-optimal itinerary for each day of visit; the places of potential interest are selected based on stated or implied user preferences. The authors' method enables the planning of customised daily personalised tourist itineraries considering user preferences, time available for visiting sights on a daily basis, opening days of sights and average visiting times for these sights. Herein, the authors propose a heuristic solution to this problem addressed to both web and mobile web users. Evaluation and simulation results verify the competence of the authors' approach against an alternative method.
The use of mobile devices as electronic tourist guides represents a recent trend that brings the ... more The use of mobile devices as electronic tourist guides represents a recent trend that brings the concept of 'mobile tourism' into the spotlight. While much of the underlying technology is already available, there are still open challenges with respect to design, usability, portability and implementation aspects. Most existing 'mobile tourism' solutions either represent of-the-shelf applications with rigidly defined content or involve portable devices with networking capabilities that browse tourist mobile portals with the requirement of constant airtime, i.e. continuous wireless network coverage. This paper presents a 'mobile tourism' research prototype which brings together the main assets of the two abovementioned approaches. Namely, it enables the creation of portable tourist applications with rich content that matches user preferences. The users may download these customizable applications either directly to their mobile device or first to a PC and then to a mobile terminal (through infrared or bluetooth). Thereafter, network coverage is not further required as the applications execute in standalone mode and may be updated when the user returns online. Our prototype has been developed on the top of Java 2 Micro Edition which offers an ideal platform for the development of fullfledged, interactive and portable applications tailored to resource-constrained mobile devices.

To effectively determine such requirements the paper reviews the use of mobile technologies in the context of cultural organizations and tourism and examines three 'real world' case studies that focus on the use of PDAs and mobile phones for providing cultural and tourist information, keeping the visitors' interest and attention, as well as promoting various cultural organizations and tourist facilities. This approach allows the extraction of a set of PDA and mobile phone application requirements, the implementation of which is based on the apparatus offered by authoring tools and development platforms. The paper reviews and evaluates the design and development facilities provided by state-of-the-art multimedia application development tools for PDAs and mobile phones: Macromedia Flash Lite, Navipocket, Java 2 Micro Edition and Microsoft .Net platform for the Mobile Web. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations related to the way authoring tools and development platforms should be exploited in order to gratify application and designer needs for developing cultural and tourist applications.

These and many other questions motivate emergence of a framework for a new trans-disciplinary field; Web science. The major scientific question of Web science could be what technological and other changes need to be incorporated in evolution of Web technologies to best serve human beings. What is Web Science? Is it a new discipline or a new name for an old discipline? Is it a genuine academic discipline at all? What is a Web Science methodology? In this context, privacy is briefly demonstrated as a Web science research case. Finally, the major research challenges and a strategic sketch for the Web Science Research Initiative are presented.

ABSTRACT This paper proposes a new method that combines input-output fuzzy clustering and optimal... more ABSTRACT This paper proposes a new method that combines input-output fuzzy clustering and optimal fuzzy clustering for the efficient design of radial basis function neural networks. We first apply the fuzzy c-means in the product (i.e. input-output) space to pre-process the available data. The resulting clusters are projected on the input space. The corresponding cluster centers are considered as a new data set which is further clustered by means of optimal fuzzy clustering in terms of the weighted fuzzy c-means. To accomplish this task we develop a new cluster validity index, which is used to identify the appropriate number of RBF hidden nodes. The algorithm is successfully implemented in well-known data sets where its performance is tested and evaluated.
