Anche lo scopo del progetto Methexis è la partecipazione delle idee, non tanto in senso metafisico, quanto in senso politico-culturale. Le idee possono vivere solo se sono lasciate libere, così da poter essere liberamente condivise, discusse e propagate. La vita della scienza, come non può essere soggetta a censura politica, così non deve essere sottoposta a recinzioni derivanti dalla esten-sione della proprietà privata al mondo dello spirito. Le nuove tecnologie rendono possibile mettere in atto la distinzione fra il libro come oggetto fisico, di proprietà privata, e le idee di cui si fa veicolo, che devono essere liberamente partecipate. Starting from a critical examination of the nexus between fear and politics, this article identif... more Starting from a critical examination of the nexus between fear and politics, this article identifies the fear of self-dispossession as a feature common to contemporary societies. Within this context, the author maintains that an important role can be played by a vigorous reproposal of the principle of ‘self-belonging’, understood as, on the one hand, the aspiration that one’s dignity be respected, and, on the other, that the irreducibility and inviolability of the Self be recognised. This principle can serve as the foundation for not only an existential perspective of the liberty and relationality of the individual, but also a vision of society based upon respect for basic universal rights and a democratic practice which extends from the local to the global level. Carl Schmitt’s thought on international relations appears from the outset to be profoundly inform... more Carl Schmitt’s thought on international relations appears from the outset to be profoundly informed by his reflections on the philosophy of history. In this the German jurist seems to be fully consonant with the climate of his time, of that generation which saw the 19th century ‘concert of Europe’ crumble beneath their feet into the great tragedy of European civil war which began with the First World War. The collapse of the world order thus almost inevitably leads him to question the meaning of history and to be influenced by the ideas of the end of the world and of history, and by the symbols and metaphors connected to this theme, which have been part of Western culture for centuries.
