This analytic dissertation utilizes contemporary neuroscience to provide a framework to understand attachment theory, the development of PTSD, and art therapy. Art making stimulates communication between the brain hemispheres, which assists in the processing of the traumatic memories that can provide opportunities for repairing trauma. Trauma-informed art therapy (TI-AT) tasks are intended to activate neurological structures of the brain associated with nonverbal memories, whereas attunement between the client and therapist can assist in establishing secure attachments that promote resiliency and reduce symptoms associated with PTSD. The purpose of this analytical dissertation is to explore TI-AT as an approach that can help RHY find relief from distressing states associated with PTSD through the establishment of an empathic relationship and the facilitation of creative expressions aimed at increasing the capacity for physiological and emotional regulation.
