The \u27Big Dry\u27, a prolonged dry period in Australia from 1997 to 2009, seared much of the Mu... more The \u27Big Dry\u27, a prolonged dry period in Australia from 1997 to 2009, seared much of the Murray-Darling Basin region and resulted in large agricultural losses, degraded river systems and increased uncertainty in rural communities although climate change in the form of drought is not new to rural Australia (Wei et al . 2012). For many years, generations of Australian farmers and farming communities have battled such climatic extremes. However, the most recent drought event competed with a myriad of changes to their lives and as such, the façade of stoicism has slowly begun to crack. This chapter examines the changes exacerbated by drought occurring in rural Victoria and considers the challenges facing both rural towns and farming families, whose economic future and social well-being are predominantly associated with agriculture. The National Climate Change Research Facility (NCCARF) is undertaking a program of Synthesis and ... more The National Climate Change Research Facility (NCCARF) is undertaking a program of Synthesis and Integrative Research to synthesise existing and emerging national and international research on climate change impacts and adaptation. The purpose of this program is to provide decision-makers with the information they need to manage the risks of climate change. This report on drought and the future of rural communities in regional Victoria forms part of a series of studies/reports commissioned by NCCARF that look at historical extreme weather events, their impacts and subsequent adaptations. These studies examine particular events-primarily extremes-and seek to explore prior vulnerabilities and resilience, the character and management of the event, subsequent adaptation and the effects on present-day vulnerability. The reports should inform thinking about adapting to climate change-that is, capacity to adapt, barriers to adaptation, and translating capacity into action. While it is recognised that the comparison is not, and never can be, exact, the over-arching goal is to better understand the requirements of successful adaptation to future climate change. This report compares the impact of drought in two agricultural communities, Mildura and Donald. The Big Dry, or Millennium Drought, has affected southeast Australia since the mid-1990s. Although there has been a return to wet La Niña conditions, it will be several seasons before conditions will return to 'normal'. This drought had serious impacts on water availability, agricultural production (due to decreased irrigation allocations), biodiversity (due to prolonged changes in habitats) and bushfire regimes. Two case studies (Mildura and Donald) were chosen to investigate the socioeconomic impacts of drought, past and present drought adaptation measures, and the future adaptation strategies that will be required to deal with projected increases to the frequency and magnitude of drought events.

‘Drought-proofing’ Regional Australia and the Rhetoric Surrounding Tillegra Dam, NSW

Water conservation, distribution and management are highly contested in the Hunter Valley of New ... more Water conservation, distribution and management are highly contested in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. During the height of the Millennium Drought calls from local politicians and community leaders alike suggested that there was a need to 'drought-proof' not only the Hunter region, but also the Australian continent from recurring climatic events. In response to this, Hunter Water Corporation framed its long-term sustainable water policies around the proposed development of 'Tillegra Dam' as a means to ensure future water security for the region. Local residents, centred around the 'No Tillegra Dam Group', opposed the dam, pointing to its harmful effects and more sustainable demand-side options. Scientific studies also indicated that future droughts were unlikely to place stress on current water levels, thereby making the dam unnecessary. Hunter Water, however, co-opted the notion of 'drought-proofing' to argue for the continuation of large-scale infrastructure projects rather than pursue less costly, more sustainable options. As a result, arguments and discourses over the dam's construction became increasingly complex, involving environmental, economic and ethical issues that ultimately favoured local community perspectives. This paper examines how the different stake-holder arguments were framed and considers the important role communities can play in altering decision-making.

The recent workshop held in Singleton, NSW aimed to highlight this by documenting what is currently known about particle levels in the atmosphere in the Upper Hunter. It brought together technical experts and interested stakeholders to exchange information on what is being done and what still needs to be done in improving air quality and environmental management.

ABSTRACT Between 1994 and 2003, 400 mergers and acquisitions took place globally in the gold mini... more ABSTRACT Between 1994 and 2003, 400 mergers and acquisitions took place globally in the gold mining industry. During this time, the gold price fell to its lowest level since the closing of the Gold Standard in 1972. In response, exploration budgets were slashed; R&amp;D projects shelved; production halved; and supply from green-fields discoveries dwindled. Many in the industry questioned the future of gold under globalising conditions and began diversifying into other minerals. Some in the industry suggested there would no longer be a role for small to medium gold producers in the future. The research in this book examines what has happened since that prediction in the late 1990s. It also examines the extent to which globalisation as an idea is understood in business circles and how this has filtered through to the global gold mining industry. By Utilising case studies which consider new emerging regions as potential gold sources, and stories gathered from gold producers within the industry, this book should provide mining professionals, geographers, resource managers and students alike with a better understanding of how old-world commodities such as gold, compete in a globalising market place.

In response to a rise in land use conflicts, the State government has recently sought to silence criticism by tightening the laws which for decades have allowed citizens to seek merit and judicial review of government decision-making around development and planning issues. This move, made in conjunction with amendments to the State Environmental Planning Policy (Mining, Petroleum Production and Extractive Industries) 2007, has been met with anger and dismay by farmers, environmentalists and concerned citizens alike. Threats to rural livelihoods and rural landscapes have increased over time as developed nations i... more Threats to rural livelihoods and rural landscapes have increased over time as developed nations in particular look for cheaper and more locally based alternatives to traditional energy sources to drive national economies. In New South Wales, through the expansion of coal mines and coal seam gas (CSG), small towns such as Gloucester on the edge of the Upper Hunter are faced with competing visions which seek to redefine their future. Powerful and competing discourses over land use threaten not only the sustainability of the region but the integrity of its sense of place, centred on community, rurality, agricultural production and confrontation of risk from mining. The different discourses of local groups such as 'tree-changers', established residents and farmers conflict with those of external organisations such as the State government and mining/CSG companies which envisage Gloucester as a 'balanced' space of coexistence and position it as a new node in the carbon supply chain.

In neoliberalising universities, collegial and collective practices such as reading groups are of... more In neoliberalising universities, collegial and collective practices such as reading groups are often positioned by students, staff and managers as less important than meeting individual KPIs (such as producing research publications, seeking research grants, or meeting the increasing demands of producing quality teaching outcomes.) However, reading groups can be vital for cultivating caring collectives and spaces of collegiality. In this paper we use assemblage thinking to explore 25 years of a Geography reading group at the University of Newcastle. The paper addresses two questions: what does reading together do and make possible; and how might we think about the labours of reading together as a way of building caring collectives. The paper draws on reflections from 24 past and present members of reading group to explore how these kinds of academic practices nourish our working lives.
