Background: Within the Norwegian cervical cancer screening program women were recommended biopsy ... more Background: Within the Norwegian cervical cancer screening program women were recommended biopsy after three consecutive smears of minor lesions (ASC-US/LSIL) 6-12 months apart until 2005. In 2005 the recommendations for biopsy changed to the 2nd ASC-US/LSIL, if the HPV-test was positive. In this study we determine the outcomes of secondary cervical cancer screening in two time-periods before (1996-1998) and after (2006-2008) implementation of an HPV test. Methods: This study has a historical prospective design by including in retrospect all screening- and follow-up tests for women aged 25 to 69 years old kept by the Department of Clinical Pathology, University Hospital of North Norway. All women with a first ASC-US/LSIL smear in 1996-98 and 2006-08 were identified and compared on outcomes such as proportion of cases resolved within 42 months of index smear and incidence of CIN2+. The Department of Clinical pathology has used an HPV mRNA test (NorChip PreTect HPV-Proofer) since the ...

Methods. The survey questionnaire was sent to all employees at UiT between August and October 2016, but only academic staff in research positions, including PhD students, were selected for the analysis. 200 researchers responded to the survey. Results. The study found that researchers are supportive of the principle of OA but are less keen on contributing to their institutional repositories for a range of reasons. These include the process being quite a hassle, academics' uncertainty over certain legal, copyright and peer review issues, prestige issues, and uncertainty over the appropriate version to deposit or self-archive. Contribution. The statistical results can be used by readers as benchmarks to compare with their own institution's figures. Conclusively, the study found that more than 90% of the researchers agreed with the OA principles, but still 54% of UiT researchers did not archive their research documents in The Munin Repository.

However, it is usually hard to achieve this, especially if the stakeholders have significantly different interests, knowledge and power. In this regard, authors in this field expect that a fisheries governance that entails sharing management responsibilities between the authorities and the resource users i.e. ‘co-management’ (Jentoft 1998) and more recently ‘results-based management’ (RBM) (Msomphora 2016) and that a transdisciplinary (Aguilar-Perera et. al) research approach will deliver better outcomes. The purpose of this paper is therefore to show how a theoretical framework can be established, on how, and to what extent, coastal communities, including those of small-scale fisheries people, can efficaciously be involved in the management of fisheries, including aquaculture. This question is explored using Northern Norway as a case study; with particular focus on how the increasing conflict betwee...

To investigate this issue, the conceptual shift from 'traditional academic science' (Mode 1 science) to 'modern post-academic science' (Mode 2 science) is used. The paper uses EU fisheries science with focus on ICES research as illustration for gaining new insights in the consequences and dilemmas of the transformation, in regards to the production of knowledge for policy-making in fisheries management. Hence the main question to be discussed in this paper is: what does the new kind of more applied 'Mode 2 science' mean for reliability, credibility, trustworthiness and quality assurance? This study, therefore, mainly demonstrates what such a transformation may imply to the scientific community and what consequences it might have for the way fisheries science is practised, and perceived in a political context.

In line with Horizon 2020’s new guidelines that open access publication of research results is an obligation, UiT The Arctic University of Norway aims to be an institution advancing free scholarly information and knowledge about how to find it, read it and use it. Through the open repository called Munin, UiT has since 2006 made, as much as possible, the scholarly documents produced by its researchers and graduate students openly available. Free access to scholarly information is one of the university's strategic goals, and researchers are recommended to save the files of their research articles to be openly available. The objective of this study is to find out researcher’s attitudes at the UiT The Arctic University of Norway regarding Open Access of research articles. Specifically, the study investigates the researchers’ attitudes, especially...

In Scotland, the form of stakeholder involvement ranges from consultation, with an advisory function, to involvement in planning and decision-making processes. Using two Inshore Fisheries Groups (IFGs) as case studies, the present paper assesses the association between participation and satisfaction of stakeholders in the decision-making process for the development and implementation of their management plans. A survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews with the stakeholders. Spearman's correlation analysis, multiple linear regression and ordered logistic regression models were used to assess and explore the associations between stakeholders' participation and satisfaction perceptions towards the process of developing and implementing fisheries plans. The results suggest a statistically significant positive relationship between stakeholders' participation and satisfaction levels. The relationship can be affected by demographic and business characteristics, and the study revealed differences in the level of satisfaction between the two IFGs investigated. Results indicate that increasing stakeholders' satisfaction in the management process plays a key role in the success of increasing stakeholders' participation in decision-making process for the management of the Scottish IFGs and EU fisheries as a whole. Such an assessment provides a better understanding of the motives that may increase the chance of successful stakeholder' participation in fisheries management.

Catch quota management (CQM) seems to be a promising candidate for such a mechanism. Drawing on a principal-agent model, the objective of this study is to develop and test a method for investigating if the CQM mechanism is efficient in providing fishers with incentives for participating in CQM and complying with the rules. The study uses the 2011 Danish CQM trial project as its empirical basis. The results indicate that CQM fishers have a higher average gross income compared to fishers harvesting according to the conventional rules. Hence, there is an incentive for fishers to participate in the trial. However, with the possibility to cheat, CQM fishers may achieve even higher gross income. It is not obvious that the CQM mechanism's payoff structure (incentives) is attractive enough to ensure that the fishers comply with the rules. The empirical data illustrate that without discarding the CQM fishers achieve a lower average price for their catches. Therefore, to make the CQM mechanism sufficiently attractive to fishers, the participating fishers must be compensated.
