May-May Meijer (1972) gained her PhD in Communication Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. She is the founder of the peace organisation Peace SOS. Peace SOS facilitates the use of so-called ‘soft powers’ in countries whose existence is threatened by armed conflicts. Additionally, May-May has published academic texts about her psychological vulnerability in Schizophrenia Bulletin of Oxford University Press and on PsychoseNet.

Effects of issues in business news on corporate reputation are often assumed, but less often put ... more Effects of issues in business news on corporate reputation are often assumed, but less often put to a test. To study these effects, this study combines a recent extension of agenda-setting theory—the second level of agenda setting—with issue ownership theory. A content analysis of business news is linked to a panel survey to measure corporate associations and corporate reputation. One would expect the reputation of a charity to be an important antecedent for the decision to donate money, as the ‘product’ of the charity is its promise to devote itself to its goal, whether this is to preserve nature or to protect human rights. The study uses panel survey data of the ‘Giving in the Netherlands project’ that were gathered in May 2004 and in May 2005. A case-control design was used to take nondonors into account as well. Several items were created to measure the attitude of the respondents toward five large Dutch charity organizations. Charitable giving was measured by asking the respondents to indicate how much they had donated to the charity concerned. Moreover, the effects of demographics on the individual's contributions to helping others will be taken into account.

This study replicates Paul, Zalka, Downes, Perry, and Friday’s scale to measure U.S. consumer sen... more This study replicates Paul, Zalka, Downes, Perry, and Friday’s scale to measure U.S. consumer sensitivity to corporate social performance (CSP) in another sample—namely, that of Dutch consumers. In addition, theories on the effects of sociodemographic variables on environmental concern have been applied to investigate the influence of individual consumer characteristics on the sensitivity to CSP. It was found that the Consumer Sensitivity Scale to CSP is a reliable one, and it also seems applicable to West European countries. For Dutch consumers, CSP serves more as a hygiene factor—it should be at a minimum acceptable level (a bottom line)—than as a motivator to buy a product. Having a left-wing political orientation, a higher level of education, being female, and being older are consumer characteristics that all have a positive influence on sensitivity to CSP. Surprisingly, household income did not influence this.

A panel survey was used to measure the reputations of six companies and two professional sectors. Media coverage was analyzed by focusing on the tone of two different types of news. News about the successes of the companies – such as higher profits – improved their reputations. In addition, some companies’ reputation improved the more they were criticized by their competitors in the news. It is argued on basis of these empirical findings that the reputation of the party attacking a company in the news is crucial in determining its influence on the reputation of the besieged company.

May-May Meijer beschrijft in dit boek hoe ze lijdt onder haar depressie na haar eerste dwangopname. De diagnose schizofrenie, de scheiding van haar man en het feit dat ze haar kindje weinig ziet, hebben diepe wonden geslagen. Haar worsteling met de medicijnen zorgt ervoor dat ze – tot wanhoop van haar familie – weer stopt met de medicatie. De AIVD komt terug in haar leven en een tweede dwangopname in de Rembrandthof volgt. Met Hier ben ik geeft May-May Meijer op een boeiende en openhartige manier inzicht in de beleveniswereld van iemand in psychische crisis. Ook wil ze aandacht vragen voor de spirituele kant van psychosen, voor haar ontmoeting met God en Zijn liefde voor alles wat leeft. Ze hoopt dan ook dat Hier ben ik bijdraagt aan wereldvrede. Here I Am – the sequel to May-May Meijer’s book Inner Voices – is a compelling account of her epi... more Here I Am – the sequel to May-May Meijer’s book Inner Voices – is a compelling account of her episodes of depression following her first compulsory hospital admission. The diagnosis of schizophrenia, her divorce, and the little time she is able to spend with her young son combine to inflict deep wounds. Her struggle with medication results in her once again refusing to take it – to the despair of her family. The Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service make a re-appearance in her life and a second compulsory admission follows.

In Here I Am, May-May gives a fascinating and frank insight into the world of an individual in psychological crisis. She also focuses attention on the spiritual side of psychoses, her encounter with God, and His love for everything that lives. Her deepest hope is that Here I Am can make a contribution towards world peace: a world in which all children can play.

Het liefdevol geschreven boek leest als een indrukwekkende roman en is mede gebaseerd op haar voorloper Een Ongeluk in Mijn Hoofd. May-May is gelukkig getrouwd, moeder van een jonge zoon en werkzaam als wetenschapper bij de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, als ze langzaam aan meegesleurd wordt in een psychose. Ze raakt zodanig in de war dat ze in haar eigen wereld leeft waarin de geheime dienst iedereen in de gaten houdt. Daardoor durft ze nauwelijks nog te praten, en censureert ze elke zin. May-May kan tenslotte niet meer voor zichzelf zorgen en moet gedwongen worden opgenomen in een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis. Haar bijzondere ontmoeting met God maakt veel indruk op haar. Ze voelt zich echter helemaal door iedereen verlaten als ze uiteindelijk moederziel alleen in de isoleercel belandt. Ondertussen proberen haar zusje en ouders wanhopig voor haar te zorgen en raakt haar man ten einde raad.

Toen het onderzoek in Nederland in 1995 van start ging, bestond er alleen Giving USA. De Verenigde Staten maken nu vijftig jaar schattingen van de filantropische geldstromen, Nederland volgt sinds tien jaar. Giving USA en Geven in Nederland bieden macro-economische schattingen. Het in kaart brengen van deze geldstromen is een proces, met vallen en opstaan. Bij de start van het Geven in Nederland-onderzoek waren cijfers niet beschikbaar, bronnen onbekend en bestaande gegevensbestanden anders ingedeeld zodat zij niet geschikt waren voor toepassing in het onderzoek. Het onderzoek naar het geefgedrag van huishoudens en naar vrijwilligerswerk is nu redelijk op orde. Collega-onderzoekers uit de Verenigde Staten hebben laten blijken jaloers te zijn op het gehanteerde longitudinale paneldesign. Meer informatie is nog wel gewenst over het geefgedrag van vermogende particulieren. Met het beschikbaar komen van het Sociaal Statistisch Basisbestand via het CBS wordt het mogelijk gegevens van de Belastingdienst over het gebruik van de giftenaftrek te analyseren. De gegevens over nalatenschappen en over de bijdragen van Nederlandse vermogensfondsen zijn nog steeds onvolledig. Voor het onderzoeken van de maatschappelijke bijdragen van het bedrijfsleven baseren de onderzoekers zich op eigen landelijke surveys (de bedrijvenomnibus van TNS-NIPO). De fluctuaties, ook dit jaar, nodigen uit tot vergelijkende studies. Terwijl ‘maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen’ op ieders tong ligt, blijkt het Geven in Nederland-onderzoek de enige empirische studie op dit terrein te zijn. In 2005 is enige teruggang te zien in vergelijking met 2003. Deze wordt met name veroorzaakt door een lager bedrag van bedrijven. In de Samenvatting van de belangrijkste bevindingen en in de verschillende hoofdstukken doen de onderzoekers gedetailleerd verslag van de resultaten van deze onderzoeksronde. Speciale aandacht vragen zij voor bijlage 1, waarin de methodologische opzet van het onderzoek wordt verantwoord. Ook deze uitgave kent weer vele extra’s, die of verstopt zijn in de hoofdstukken van deel A en B, of samengevat in de drie ‘specials’ in een nieuw toegevoegd deel C. Alle onderzoeksresultaten zijn op de website www.geveninnederland.nl na te lezen.

I met God, Christ, and asked him if he could prove to me that he truly existed. Show me empirical evidence. I have been approximately ten years ill and it took me eight years to let me guide by my heart instead of by my mind. It was a tough period: my husband divorced from me, I hardly saw my son, I quit my job at university and felt ill and lonely. Nevertheless, I am happy that I found that God is love and that he is with me all day and night now. Together we are working on a more peaceful, better and fairer world with-and for-all of us.
