Em junho de 2000, estudantes de economia da França lançaram um manifesto afirmando a sua insatisf... more Em junho de 2000, estudantes de economia da França lançaram um manifesto afirmando a sua insatisfação com o ensino que estavam recebendo. Problemas como a utilização da matemática como um fim em si mesmo, a falta de pluralismo e a ausência de preocupação com a realidade foram destacados pelos estudantes. Como a base do ensino de economia na França, tal como Como a base do ensino de economia na França, tal como em muitos outros países, é a teoria neoclássica, será que essa teoria estaria se tornando introspecta de fato? Se este for o caso, por que isso teria ocorrido? Para contribuir com esse debate, foi realizado neste artigo um estudo da história do pensamento econômico recente, examinando os seus fundamentos nas próprias transformações do modo de produção capitalista no pós-guerra.

Isso emerge da insatisfação em relação a um debate antigo sobre a falta de correspondência com a realidade dos modelos teóricos de "mainstream". Embora não tenhamos a pretensão de resolver esse debate aqui, buscamos neste artigo associar a falta de correspondência dos modelos mais matematizados com a realidade a adoção do método hipotético-dedutivo reproduzido pelo equilíbrio geral. Partimos da definição dos principais benefícios gerados pela matematização da economia. Em seguida, apontamos as críticas mais tradicionais. Depois nos concentramos nas críticas recentes de GIllIES (2005) e BRESSER-PEREIRA (2008) a esse processo. Por último, de maneira tentativa buscamos associar a reprodução do método hipotético-dedutivo a um processo meta-teórico deflagrado com a teoria do equilíbrio geral de Debreu. Nesse aspecto, nos apropriamos das ideias de wEINTRAUB (2002), PUNZO (1991), mas principalmente de wOO (1986) para apoiar nossa hipótese. PAlAVRAS-ChAVE: matematização; hipotético-dedutivo; metateoria. ABSTRACT: Many economists show certain nonconformity relative to the excessive mathematical formalization of economics. This stems from dissatisfaction with the old debate about the lack of correspondence between mainstream theoretical models and reality. Although we do not propose to settle this debate here, this article seeks to associate the mismatch of mathematized models with the reality of the adoption of the hypothetical-deductive method as reproduced by general equilibrium. we begin by defining the main benefits of the mathematization of economics. Secondly, we address traditional criticism leveled against it. we then focus on more recent criticism from Gillies (2005) and Bresser-Pereira (2008). Finally, we attempt to associate the reproduction of the hypothetical-deductive method with a metatheoretical process triggered by Debreu's general equilibrium theory. In this respect, we appropriate the ideas of weintraub (2002), Punzo (1991), and mainly woo (1986) to support our hypothesis.

Mirowski (1991) analisa esse fenômeno e acha que ele começou mais fortemente a partir de 1925. No entanto, ele não mostra em seu artigo como a matemática e a física qualitativamente impactaram a economia. Este é o objetivo principal deste artigo: descrever, de maneira sistemática, como a matemática e a física influenciaram a constituição da economia, culminando na adoção do equilíbrio geral como metateoria e a generalização do método hipotético-dedutivo. For this, we have classified into several categories all articles published in three major Brazilian economic journals (Revista Brasileira de Economia, Estudos Econômicos, and Revista de Economia Política) and the publications of ANPEC meetings from 1981 to 2010, according to the type of argument used. A total of 5,733 articles were analyzed. We attempt to see how mathematization of economic discourse developed, and found that there was an increased use of a formalized language from the mid-1990s onwards. Finally, to confirm our findings, we focus on the process of mathematization through the observation of a quantitative variable: equations per article.

The possibility of the economy becoming more mathematicized began in the late nineteenth century,... more The possibility of the economy becoming more mathematicized began in the late nineteenth century, with the Marginal revolution. According to MIROWSKI (1991), however, the process of mathematicization of economic discourse only became widespread from 1925 onwards. In an attempt to elucidate how and when this process took place in Brazil, we wrote three critical essays on the subject. The goal of the first essay is afford Brazilian students and researchers easier access to a discussion that is somewhat disperse in our country, and also to encourage further research on the subject. We begin the second essay by presenting the main benefits of the mathematicization of economics, as argued by some of the advocates of the progress of the mathematical formalization of economic discourse. After that, we point out the more traditional criticisms to this mathematicization process. In our third essay, we check how mathematical formalization in economics advanced in Brazil in the last three decades. To this end, we categorize every article published in three of Brazil‟s main economics journals from 1981 to 2010, according to the type of argument used. The total of articles analyzed was 5,733.
