The focus was reflective metacognitive competence development (Appendix 1.) of Physiotherapy students. The authors used both individual and collaborative concept mapping and improved Vee heuristics in learning process evaluation. The content of the design experiment was ‘Coping at Home’. As educational research it was a design experiment, a multi-case, multi-method study. The core concept of the study unit and development project was ‘successful aging’. Both Cmap Recorder and videotaping of discussions during group concept mapping were used. The main result was that plenty of face-to-face dialogue was needed before the shared understanding and group concept maps were created. First the main concepts were fixed and then other concepts and their relationships were elaborated. Differences between individuals and two groups are analysed. In the collaborative learning process, the feeling in both groups was...

The main data and conclusions are based on documents, memories and notes from Finland, but also from Sweden, Estonia and Russia 1984-2008. One of the main innovative uses of concept mapping in Finland has been its use and development as research method and quality tool. Concept mapping is compared to other graphic representation tools, in particular mind mapping and clustering. In the article the main features about history of concept mapping in Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Russia 1984-2008 is presented based on documents. Based on scattered evidence mind mapping is more spread and used than concept mapping in all these countries. In Finland concept mapping has stronger position than in Sweden, Estonia and Russia. More research is needed to reveal history and development of Novakian type of concept mapping both regionally and globally.

Its main components include local (wild) green vegetables, citrus fruits, and olive oil (extra virgin). Since the 1990s, experimental research on phytochemicals to explain why plant food is healthy and promotes longevity has grown exponentially. Nowadays, molecular biology provides deep explanations for many experimentally found health-promoting properties of plant species and their phytochemicals. The specialized approach is OK because it is the way research progresses. Mainly, nutritional researchers concentrate on a particular group of compounds such as flavonoids, phenolic compounds, carboxylic acids, fatty acids, and so forth. Science outside the research on nutrition deals with the same chemical compounds but which nutritional researchers generally do not follow. Plant biologists have found that all photosynthesizing plants share many compounds and ions. They are vital to plants. Some of the compounds and ions are also vital to humans. Plant biologists make a distinction between minerals, primary metabolites, and secondary metabolites. This distinction applies partly to humans. Plant minerals and primary metabolites often are essential to humans. Plant secondary metabolites are often not vital to humans but experimental research has shown that they promote health and longevity. Eating local wild edible plants (WEP) also promotes sustainability. WEPs are an ecosystem service. I have found 52 compounds and ions that all green edible plants share, promoting human health, well-being, and longevity, and I present the evidence in this paper.

Mapping Mixed-Methods Research Theories, Models, and Measures CHAPTER OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES As ... more Mapping Mixed-Methods Research Theories, Models, and Measures CHAPTER OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES As we saw in Chapters 3 and 4, quantitative and qualitative researchers pursue different approaches to gathering and analyzing data. For many years, these differences have underscored broader political disagreements (Jick, 1979). For a new generation of researchers, the either/or approaches of the past are incomplete and outdated. Instead, the complexity of today's research problems requires more comprehensive and nuanced efforts (Wheeldon, 2010b). Indeed, past divisions among researchers often failed to consider that, in many ways, qualitative and quantitative data are inherently related. All quantitative data are based on qualitative judgments; all qualitative data can be described numerically. As presented in Chapter 1, all research is a series of decisions (Palys, 1992). Mixed-methods research provides more choices, options, and approaches to consider. For this reason, it has emerged as the "third methodological movement" (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2007, p.13). As an important new research community, it involves research in which both qualitative and quantitative approaches to data gathering, analysis, interpretation, and presentation are used (Teddlie & Tashakkori, 2009, p. 7). Both concept maps and mind maps can be used as part of mixed-methods research. This chapter will provide examples of how concept maps can be used as

When interview transcripts or other texts are transformed into concept maps, the results will vary. In this study we’ll make a small experiment using a novice concept mapper and an expert concept mapper to map the same interview transcripts. The intent of the novice concept mapper is to use concept mapping as a research method in his doctoral dissertation on and for the UNU-IAS RCE Espoo. A RCE (Regional Center of Expertise) is a network of existing formal, non-formal and informal education organizations, to deliver Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) to local and regional communities. RCEs aspire to achieve the goals of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UN DESD 2005-2014). A purposeful sample of stakeholders, partners and supporters of the UNU-IAS RCE Espoo were interviewed (N=27). The interviews were analyzed using concept mapping data analysis. This paper focuses on the concept mapping data analysis of the Director General of The Finnish Na...

In one class, concept maps were used as advance organizers for lectures, and the learners constructed and modified some group maps for short text sections, as well as a midterm map. In the second class, students constructed concept maps of each text chapter as part of their course assignments. Concept maps were also used by a Social Work professor as a basis for class discussion.

The authors show how concept maps and mind maps can be used in quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research, using student-friendly examples and classroom-based activities. Integrating theory and practice, chapters show how to use these tools to plan research projects, “see” analysis strategies, and assist in the development and writing of research reports
