We are delighted to announce the beginning of a very promising collaboration between the Ludwig W... more We are delighted to announce the beginning of a very promising collaboration between the Ludwig Wittgenstein Project and a similar initiative that aims to produce an extensive collection of translations of Wittgenstein’s works into Arabic. The homonymous endeavour, مشروع لودفيغ فتغنشتاين Ludwig Wittgenstein Project, was launched in 2018 in partnership with the Beirut/Baghdad - based publishing house Dar Al-Rafidain. Its ten-year plan encompasses the first systematic translation of Wittgenstein’s works into the Arabic language as well as the translation of recent studies on his philosophy.
Starting from January 2022, thanks to this collaboration, Wittgenstein’s works will gradually become available online in Arabic as well. By February 2022, the following texts will be published: the Review of P. Coffey, “The Science of Logic”, Some Remarks on Logical Form, the Lecture on Ethics, and Philosophy. All will be licenced under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. This is just the beginning. In the future, we will work on many ideas and texts.

Many researchers consider him the greatest philosopher of the twentieth century. Previous efforts to translate Wittgenstein's books and study his ideas in the Arab world were few and far between. These studies and efforts focused on specific aspects of his philosophy. There is no organized institutional work concerned with the philosopher and his works.
Our project inaugurates a new era in dealing with the Austrian philosopher in the Arab world.
The main goals of our project:
1. Studying Wittgenstein's ideas and translating his books. The project will last for more than ten years and will be one of the most important philosophical translation projects in the Arab world.
2. Wittgenstein in the Arab context: Reading his philosophy in the light of our reality and circumstances.
We also aim for the project to be a successful and distinguished example for other projects. We hope that our work will inspire translators and researchers to launch their own cultural projects.
The project was launched in 2018, and we will achieve our goal in 2028.
The founder of the Ludwig Wittgenstein project is Marwan Mahmoud. In 2018, Marwan Mahmoud started working on the project. Marwan cooperated with Dar Al-Rafidain in 2019. The cooperation will continue until 2028 to achieve the goals of the project.
Dar Al-Rafidain: A cultural institution and publishing house based in Beirut and Baghdad. Dar Al-Rafidain publishes translations and books in the humanities and other scientific and cultural fields.
Marwan Mahmoud: A Jordanian translator, and a researcher in analytic philosophy, contemporary philosophy, and the philosophy of Wittgenstein. He is currently studying German at the University of Jordan. He is the founder of the Ludwig Wittgenstein Project, which he is working on in cooperation with Dar Al-Rafidain. Marwan also works on translating several books into Arabic in the field of philosophy.

يعدّ فتغنشتاين من أهم الفلاسفة في القرن العشرين، وهو، بالنسبة لمجموعة كبيرة من دارسي الفلسفة وأس... more يعدّ فتغنشتاين من أهم الفلاسفة في القرن العشرين، وهو، بالنسبة لمجموعة كبيرة من دارسي الفلسفة وأساتذتها، أهم فيلسوف في القرن العشرين. على الرغم من أهميته الكبيرة، إلا أن الجهود المبذولة في سبيل دراسته وتعريبه في العالم العربي قليلة جدًا ومتفرقة. لم يصل، أيضًا، الاهتمام بفتغنشتاين إلى مستوى العمل المؤسسي المنظم. يدشّن مشروعنا مرحلة جديدة في التعامل مع الفيلسوف النمساوي. أبرز أهداف المشروع: 1. دراسة أفكاره وترجمة كتبه من خلال مشروع جادّ سيستمر لأكثر من عشر سنوات، وسيكون من أهم المشاريع الترجمية المعنية بالفلسفة في العالم العربي 2. تبيئة فتغنشتاين عربيًا، والاستفادة من فلسفته في التفكير حول القضايا المرتبطة بواقعنا الفكري والثقافي والاجتماعي والسياسي. نعمل على أن يكون المشروع أنموذجًا ناجحًا ومميزًا، ونأمل أن نلهم غيرنا من المترجمين والباحثين للعمل على مشاريعهم الثقافية في الحقول المختلفة. بدأ المشروع عام 2018، وسينتهي عام 2028

Why did such highly abstract ideas as truth, knowledge, or justice become so important to us? What was the point of coming to think in these terms? The Practical Origins of Ideas presents a philosophical method designed to answer such questions: the method of pragmatic genealogy. Pragmatic genealogies are partly fictional, partly historical narratives exploring what might have driven us to develop certain ideas in order to find out what these do for us. The book uncovers an under-appreciated tradition of pragmatic genealogy which cuts across the analytic-continental divide, running from the state-of-nature stories of David Hume and the early genealogies of Friedrich Nietzsche to recent work in analytic philosophy by Edward Craig, Bernard Williams, and Miranda Fricker. However, these genealogies combine fictionalizing and historicizing in ways that even philosophers sympathetic to the use of state-of-nature fictions or real history have found puzzling. To make sense of why both fictionalizing and historicizing are called for, the book offers a systematic account of pragmatic genealogies as dynamic models serving to reverse-engineer the points of ideas in relation not only to near-universal human needs, but also to socio-historically situated needs. This allows the method to offer us explanation without reduction and to help us understand what led our ideas to shed the traces of their practical origins. Far from being normatively inert, moreover, pragmatic genealogy can affect the space of reasons, guiding attempts to improve our conceptual repertoire by helping us determine whether and when our ideas are worth having.

يعدّ كتاب "في اليقين" من أهم أعمال الفيلسوف لودفيغ فتغنشتاين. كتبه في آخر عام ونصف من حياته في أث... more يعدّ كتاب "في اليقين" من أهم أعمال الفيلسوف لودفيغ فتغنشتاين. كتبه في آخر عام ونصف من حياته في أثناء مرضه، وخاض في جدالات مع صديقه نورمان مالكولم عام 1949 عن المعرفة والحس المشترك عند جورج مور، وتبعًا لذلك، كتب مجموعة من الفقرات والملاحظات شكلت كتابه هذا. وناقشت هذه الفقرات موضوعات مثل المعرفة واليقين والممارسات الإنسانية، وتطرق إلى المذاهب الفلسفية مثل الشكية والمثالية موضحًا أنها عديمة وغير مفهومة، فضلاً عن أفكار مهمة ناقشها فتغنشتاين مثل الصور العالمية واللغة العادية وأشكال الحياة والألعاب اللغوية والجنون وفكرة قاع النهر والسنجاب. إن فلسفة فتغنشتاين للحياة والإنسان العادي، تنفر من الصلابة والجمود، أي شيء لا حياة له، ويكافح لحماية ذلك البعد العميق للعالم والإنسان. فلسفته من صلب الحياة ومعاناتها. وفي اليقين دليل على أن الفلسفة لم تمت عند فتغنشتاين المتأخر، لما ينخرط فيه في اليقين من مباحث فلسفية قديمة وحديثة، مفجرًا لأفق جديدة في الفلسفة وغيرها من المجالات

The 37th edition of Tabayyun has been published by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies. This Special Issue on "Reading Wittgenstein in Arabic" begins with guest editor Islam Dayeh's introduction and includes the following articles: "Wittgenstein: Language Forms, Life Forms" by Abderrazak Bannour; "Wittgenstein and Logical Behaviorism" by Raja Bahlul; "Wittgenstein’s Picture Theory: On What Can Be Said" by Morris Ayek; "Thinking with Wittgenstein against Wittgenstein. لماذا أصبحت أفكار شديدة التجريد كالحقيقة أو المعرفة أو العدالة في هذه الأهمية البالغة عندما؟ ما غاية التفكير بهذه المفاهيم؟ يقدم ماثيو كيلو – الفائز بجائزة لاونر للفلاسفة الصاعدين عام 2020- في كتابه البارز الأصول العملية للأفكار منهجًا فلسفيًا مصممًا للإجابة عن مثل هذه الأسئلة: منهج الجينالوجيا البراغماتية. تعدّ الجينالوجيات البراغماتية، في جزء منها، سرديات خيالية، وفي جزء آخر، هي سرديات تاريخية للبحث فيما قد يدفعنا لتطوير أفكار معينة من أجل معرفة ما تنجزه هذه الأفكار لنا. يكشف الكتاب عن تقليد لم يحظ بالتقدير الكافي في الجينالوجيا البراغماتية، وهو تقليد يتجاوز الانقسام التحليلي-القاري، وله جذور في قصص حالة الطبيعة عند ديفيد هيوم والجينالوجيات المبكرة عند فريدريك نيتشه، ويستمر هذا التقليد في الفلسفة المعاصرة، ويبلغ ذروته في الأعمال الحديثة في الفلسفة التحليلية لإدوارد كريغ وبرنارد ويليامز وميراندا فريكر. تجمع هذه الجينالوجيات، على نحو محير، بين التاريخ والخيال. ولفهم سبب الحاجة إلى الخيال والتاريخ، يقدم الكتاب تصورًا منهجيًا للجينالوجيات البراغماتية بوصفها نماذج دينامية تعمل على إجراء هندسة عكسية لغايات الأفكار فيما يتعلق بالاحتياجات الإنسانية شبه الكونية والاحتياجات الإنسانية التاريخية والاجتماعية على المستويات المحلية. وهذا يسمح للمنهج أن يقدم تفسيرات تساعدنا على فهم الأصول العملية لأفكارنا. كما تساعدنا الجينالوجيا البراغماتية على تطوير مخزوننا المفاهيمي وتحديد متى من الممكن أن نتخلى عن الأفكار والممارسات أو نتمسك بها. يزود المنهج، أيضًا، الفلسفة بأدوات لدمج الفهم الاجتماعي والنفسي والتاريخي في الفلسفة، وعليه، يقدم للفلاسفة نموذجًا ملموسًا لكيفية العمل في الفلسفة بوصفها تخصصًا إنسانيًا يتفاعل مع العلوم الإنسانية والمناهج الأخرى.

This Special Issue on "Reading Wittgenstein in Arabic" begins with guest editor Islam Dayeh's introduction and includes the following articles: "Wittgenstein: Language Forms, Life Forms" by Abderrazak Bannour; "Wittgenstein and Logical Behaviorism" by Raja Bahlul; "Wittgenstein’s Picture Theory: On What Can Be Said" by Morris Ayek; "Thinking with Wittgenstein against Wittgenstein. Apel and Habermas: Universalism through the Everyday" by Somar Almir Mahmoud; and "Wittgenstein as a Teacher: The Pedagogical Background of Wittgenstein's Anthropological Philosophy," by Islam Dayeh.
Hajjaj Abu Jabr provides the issue with a translation of Talal Asad's "Thinking about Religion through Wittgenstein." Also included is Marwan Mahmoud's review of Wittgenstein and On Certainty and Islam Dayeh's and Hassane Kissane's Wittgenstein in Arabic: A Bibliography.

Starting from January 2022, thanks to this collaboration, Wittgenstein’s works will gradually become available online in Arabic as well. By February 2022, the following texts will be published: the Review of P. Coffey, “The Science of Logic”, Some Remarks on Logical Form, the Lecture on Ethics, and Philosophy. All will be licenced under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. This is just the beginning. In the future, we will work on many ideas and texts.
Our project inaugurates a new era in dealing with the Austrian philosopher in the Arab world.
The main goals of our project:
1. Studying Wittgenstein's ideas and translating his books. The project will last for more than ten years and will be one of the most important philosophical translation projects in the Arab world.
2. Wittgenstein in the Arab context: Reading his philosophy in the light of our reality and circumstances.
We also aim for the project to be a successful and distinguished example for other projects. We hope that our work will inspire translators and researchers to launch their own cultural projects.
The project was launched in 2018, and we will achieve our goal in 2028.
The founder of the Ludwig Wittgenstein project is Marwan Mahmoud. In 2018, Marwan Mahmoud started working on the project. Marwan cooperated with Dar Al-Rafidain in 2019. The cooperation will continue until 2028 to achieve the goals of the project.
Dar Al-Rafidain: A cultural institution and publishing house based in Beirut and Baghdad. Dar Al-Rafidain publishes translations and books in the humanities and other scientific and cultural fields.
Marwan Mahmoud: A Jordanian translator, and a researcher in analytic philosophy, contemporary philosophy, and the philosophy of Wittgenstein. He is currently studying German at the University of Jordan. He is the founder of the Ludwig Wittgenstein Project, which he is working on in cooperation with Dar Al-Rafidain. Marwan also works on translating several books into Arabic in the field of philosophy.

Why did such highly abstract ideas as truth, knowledge, or justice become so important to us? What was the point of coming to think in these terms? The Practical Origins of Ideas presents a philosophical method designed to answer such questions: the method of pragmatic genealogy. Pragmatic genealogies are partly fictional, partly historical narratives exploring what might have driven us to develop certain ideas in order to find out what these do for us. The book uncovers an under-appreciated tradition of pragmatic genealogy which cuts across the analytic-continental divide, running from the state-of-nature stories of David Hume and the early genealogies of Friedrich Nietzsche to recent work in analytic philosophy by Edward Craig, Bernard Williams, and Miranda Fricker. However, these genealogies combine fictionalizing and historicizing in ways that even philosophers sympathetic to the use of state-of-nature fictions or real history have found puzzling. To make sense of why both fictionalizing and historicizing are called for, the book offers a systematic account of pragmatic genealogies as dynamic models serving to reverse-engineer the points of ideas in relation not only to near-universal human needs, but also to socio-historically situated needs. This allows the method to offer us explanation without reduction and to help us understand what led our ideas to shed the traces of their practical origins. Far from being normatively inert, moreover, pragmatic genealogy can affect the space of reasons, guiding attempts to improve our conceptual repertoire by helping us determine whether and when our ideas are worth having.
