The schizophrenic patients failed to detect the dominant character of the scenes, and perceived the opposite emotions to those perceived by the controls. Such deviant responses were not related to paranoid symptoms, flattened affect, formal thought disorder, general level of morbidity, or duration of in-patient stay.

The book argues that group analysis needs theoretical renewal to remain relevant, and that philosophy is a valuable resource for such thinking. In particular, the work of three philosophers is examined: Nietzsche, Dewey, and Gadamer, each being associated with "pragmaticperspective" inquiry. The author demonstrates that group analysis is compatible with such inquiry, and that we understand and intervene from within the horizon of specific traditions of training and theory. Group analysis typifies an unremitting relational stance, valuing openness of dialogue, and moving in and out of the perspectival worlds of the participants. The book also offers a re-formulation of the concept of social unconscious, seen as a discursive world of production and articulation. Drawing on contemporary social theories, it chimes with the spirit of Elias's historical approach. Considering social worlds markedly different, often incommensurable, with our own, the author provides accounts of the shifting social unconsciousness during the Reformation and revolutionary upheavals in England. The social unconscious generates ideals and exclusions, both model and abject figures, such as those of the witch, the model Christian, degenerates and other "dangerous classes". Returning to clinical concerns, the final two essays address the "narrative turn" in social sciences. The implications of considering persons as story-telling, metaphorical animals is explored, as is the inevitability that personal stories are infused by wider, cultural narratives. Society has changed considerably since Foulkes' day and the final chapter considers how group analysis can help contain as well as illuminate some of the complex issues we face in the modern world, and thus remain relevant.

Indeed, according to government advice, some Covid positive patients could be moved into care-homes as 'some care providers will be able to accommodate these individuals through effective isolation strategies or cohorting strategies'. Further, as part of freeing up scarce resources in the NHS, as the pandemic took hold, some elderly patients were discharged back into care-homes, without necessarily testing for Covid. Lest we forget: reflecting on pre-pandemic, pandemic and post-pandemic life Nick Barwick They change to a high new house, He, she, all of them - aye, Clocks and carpets and chairs On the lawn all day, And the brightest things that are theirs .... Malone's final chapter is on relational psychoanalysis and this picks up a key theme throughout the book about the sea change that has impacted psychoanalysis. By focussing on a two-person psychology, the emergence of intersubjectivity and the analytic third, the experience of multiple self states and the analyst's use of the self, Malone (and colleagues) capture the dynamism of the clinical experience where 'the therapist and patient are immersed together in processes of relating' (p. 222). Charles concludes with an 'Afterword' focussing on the life-giving aspects that psychoanalysis still has to offer. Charles has produced a book full of brief but helpful overviews, contemporary critiques, unanswered questions, and innovative ideas. It introduces psychoanalysts we are familiar with but adds new perspectives, as well as introducing us to the work of less well-known analysts. The authors are passionate about their approach, which is enjoyable to engage with as a reader, whilst being aware of some of the limitations. It will be of great value to students and practitioners wanting to discover the richness and diversity of contemporary psychoanalysis for psychodynamic practice.
