due to a number of reasons... more The continued absence today of women in the mainstream of Kathakali is due to a number of reasons. However, despite their absence as actors, the gender is present in Kathakali as a multi-layered feminine construct, refracted across female and male characters in ways not true for men. This essays examines in close detail with visual examples what the female roles as interpreted by men reveals--ie, which aspects of the feminine are highly revered and praised and which are feared and loathed. I will also discuss how Kathakali's female stock character types correlate with the wider Hindu worldview of the feminine.
