The article reviews Belgian naval forces before the Second World War, explains the reasons for the creation of this unusual force, details the ships and personnel involved, and argues that the British decision to incorporate Belgians into the Royal Navy benefitted both Britain and Belgium.

Before explaining the exercise, it is useful to understand the context for its development. I tea... more Before explaining the exercise, it is useful to understand the context for its development. I teach undergraduate students, mostly freshmen and sophomores, at the Hartford branch campus of the University of Connecticut (hereafter UC-H). The five University of Connect icut branch campuses are two-year, commuter schools without dormitories. Students often choose to enroll at UC-H because of the convenient location and low cost. The campus is not far from two major interstate highways, 1-84 and 1-91 (see Map 3), and is in the center of the Hartford metropolitan area. Most students eventually transfer as juniors to the main campus at Storrs in the town of Mansfield to complete a major and earn their degree. though some remain to complete one of a handful of four-year degree programs offered at UC-H. Students at UC-H typically take Introduction to Geography or World Regional Geography to satisfy university liberal arts distribution requirements, and seldom have taken geography in high school. One of the three short writing assignments students complete outside of class for my section of Introduction to Geography is a simplified version of the lesson plan Background _..

Achieving synthesis, the integration of diverse information sources to create a new whole, is vit... more Achieving synthesis, the integration of diverse information sources to create a new whole, is vital to the intellectual task of the geographer. This is true regardless of the type of geography being conducted or studied. A modern, analytical regional geography such as advocated by Murphy and O’Loughlin (2009) necessitates a synthesizing approach, integrating the diverse types of information needed to make sense of a place. Gilbert (1988, 218) identifies analysis and synthesis as complementary techniques for regional geographers to use in understanding a region. She goes on to articulate the reasoning behind the need for synthesis in regional geography. “Cultural, political and economic processes together shape and structure the specific regions under investigation and it is only through the study of their interrelationships that the regional specificity can be retraced. Such a study involves a process of synthesis, a process that takes the results of analyses, the detailed studies of particular aspects of society and draws out the web of relationships that integrates and binds them to produce spatial differentiation” (1988, 218–219). Abstract This commentary suggests that the first geography course a student takes is of critical ... more Abstract This commentary suggests that the first geography course a student takes is of critical importance because the relative success or failure of the instructor in offering an interesting, relevant, and well-taught class may strongly influence whether the student takes additional geography courses later in his or her educational career.
After being driven from Greece by the German military in 1941, the Royal Hellenic Navy (RHN) oper... more After being driven from Greece by the German military in 1941, the Royal Hellenic Navy (RHN) operated alongside Britain's Royal Navy (RN) from bases in Egypt, Lebanon, and Malta. In April 1944 the RHN experienced a widespread mutiny, which began in Alexandria, Egypt, over the political composition of the Greek government. This essay explores the importance of the Alexandria mutiny to the RHN. It investigates the role of the navy in the royalist/republican rivalry of the 1920s-1930s, the wartime return to service of republican officers, the RHN's operations under British direction in the eastern Mediterranean, the political orientation of the government-in-exile, disturbances in the RHN prior to the mutiny, the events of the mutiny itself, the aftermath of the mutiny, how the mutiny affected the RN-RHN relationship, and the significance of the mutiny within the context of naval history in general. Wartime RN records held at the Public Record Office outside London, United States Navy intelligence reports held at the National Archives and Records Administration at College Park, Maryland, as well as unpublished and published secondary sources, provide the basis of this investigation.
