A data collection process allows us to review the contamination levels, and take actions in a timely manner. Nowadays wireless sensor networks support the collection of large amounts of environmental data. If these data are properly processed, they can be used in the detection of pollution sources, and in the design of preventive -or corrective- strategies to deal with it. However, this requires to effectively manage largeamount of data obtained from heterogeneous devices, including not only data from traditional sensors or motes of wireless sensor networks, but also from sensors within Smartphones. These new resources increase the power and accessibility of grids. Wireless devices can be grid resource consumers or grid resource providers. This chapter focuses in the use of mobile devices as resource providers. Some characteristics of these resources, such as limited CPU power, small screen, short battery life, and intermittent disconnection, are genuine challenges for the development of job management strategies. Our goal is to depict recent proposals in resource discovering, monitoring and job scheduling. The main contributions of the last five years will be described along the chapter. Geometry teaching in elementary schools in Colombia is a challenging task. Students’ problems wit... more Geometry teaching in elementary schools in Colombia is a challenging task. Students’ problems with this topic have led to below-average performances in the Program of International Student Assessment. To face this challenge, this paper presents Akasha, a personalized software application to reinforce geometry teaching to elementary school children between 5 and 7 years old. Akasha provides ludic activities to identify and characterize polyhedra, polygons, and shape attributes. To further improve the experience, Akasha uses information about users to adjust the difficulty level, and to customize the look and feel of the application. To validate the approach, this study assessed student performance before and after using Akasha in three different schools (public and private) of Bogota (Colombia). The results suggest that the use of Akasha may have a positive impact on students’ learning, regardless of their social, economic, or technological background.

Disciplines, such as Computing present several challenges in this regard, since the topics that students must learn tend to be fine-grained and highly interconnected. First, one must ensure that the most important topics of the curriculum are taught in at least one course. Second, for every topic taught, their prerequisites must have been covered previously in the same course or in a previous one. Third, courses must include topics that are highly cohesive and with minimal dependencies to topics taught in previous courses. To address the above challenges, this paper proposes a graph-based approach to analyze and design a curriculum, which also includes some Backward Design elements. Services for Modeling Metasystem Performance using Queueing Network Models

The use of metacomputing systems for high performance computing is gaining considerable acceptanc... more The use of metacomputing systems for high performance computing is gaining considerable acceptance. In such kind of environments, performance models help to obtain the expected application performance. Hence, it is important that the metasystem provides services for building these models. These services should support the main activities related to model development: measurements to parameterize the model, and the possibility of reproducing scenarios, which is useful for calibration and validation tasks. Our research focuses on identifying these services and incorporating them into the SUMA metasystem. In this article, we describe the identified services and how they are going to be included in SUMA. The obtained parameters will feed queueing network models (QNM). Additionally, we describe the service that measures the metasystem overhead and show some preliminary results.

Executing tasks on mobile devices brings some challenges that must be addressed, such as device h... more Executing tasks on mobile devices brings some challenges that must be addressed, such as device heterogeneity, limited CPU power, limited memory, short battery life, mobility, and intermittent disconnections. BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing), the platform chosen in our research project that aims to process medical images using mobile phones, does not completely solve these challenges. In this sense, this article's objective is to present the modifications to BOINC's scheduling strategy to consider the characteristics of mobile devices and possible disconnections. The article describes BOINC-MGE (BOINC -Mobile Grid Extension), a BOINC extension that incorporates two new task scheduling algorithms to ensure the completion of tasks while efficiently using the mobile devices' energy. The strategies are tested using an image segmentation algorithm.

Since some algorithms for processing images require substantial amounts of resources, one could take advantage of distributed or parallel computing. A mobile grid can be an adequate computing infrastructure for this problem. A mobile grid is a grid that includes mobile devices as resource providers. In a previous step of this research, we selected BOINC as the infrastructure to build our mobile grid. However, parallel processing of images in mobile devices poses at least two important challenges: the execution of standard libraries for processing images and obtaining adequate performance when compared to desktop computers grids. The method employs a new iterative optimisation technique which both balances the workload and attempts to minimise the interprocessor communications overhead. Experiments on a series of adaptively refined meshes indicate that the algorithm provides partitions of an equivalent or higher quality to static partitioners (which do not reuse the existing partition) and much more quickly. Perhaps more importantly, the algorithm results in only a small fraction of the amount of data migration compared to the static partitioners.

GBLOT is an analytical generator of workloads that can be used to evaluate the short-term behavior of blog hosting sites. The user session model of GBLOT is based on CBMGs (Customer Behavior Model Graphs). The tool provides a distributed architecture which refers to the possibility of generating processes among several computational nodes. The Cloud Computing Model integrates and offers to users several computational resources as a service, on demand. The Cloud model is supported by technologies such as Grid Computing, virtualization and Web 2.0. The monitoring is a very complex issue in this model, due to the particular characteristics of supporting platform. Furthermore, research in this topic has been rather poor. Our research work focuses on Monitoring in Cloud Computing platforms, particularly in private and hybrid. Part of the work presented in this article has been done within the context of the OPTIMIS and BonFIRE projects. The goal of this work is to evaluate existing monitoring tools that can be used in Cloud environments and subsequently included in the monitoring component of the projects.

Blogging is an example of Web 2.0 application for sharing informa-tion. These new applications induce workloads in the web with new features, whose study is important for introducing improvements at the architecture, operating system and middleware levels to allow a better support of them. The knowledge of workload characteristics is also essential for the development of workload generators that support capacity planning and traffic engineering activities. In this article, we describe GBLOT, a Generator of synthetic BLOgosphere Traffic based on analytical models, which can be used to evaluate the short-term behavior of blog hosting sites. The GBLOT&#39;s user session model is based on VBMGs (Visitor Behavior Model Graphs). The access patterns and transfer sizes of user sessions follow descriptive statistical models, based on characteristics of real traces. To validate GBLOT and demonstrate its usefulness, we generate traffic against artificial blogs managed by Movable Type publishing system. Our results show that the management of comments in Movable Type publishing system consumes an important amount of CPU time (above 70%).
