Special thanks to my committee chair Dr. Victoria Fu, for guiding me through the entire dissertation process. I also appreciate the time and input of all my committee members including Dr. Susan Hutchinson who continued to support me even after she transferred to another university. Dr. Doris Martin first helped me think about this topic in scholarly fashion years ago in my first graduate class and supported me long distance throughout the experience. Dr. Melanie Uttech helped me expand my ideas of all the possibilities qualitative research holds and opened the door to my future work as a methodologist. My department chair at Eastern Mennonite University, Dr. Donovan Steiner's, support and flexibility was the reason I was able to take my first doctoral course and envision the possibility of a second one. Dr. Steiner's acknowledgment is also symbolic of the larger church of Mennonites he represents and the generations of a belief in care that my dissertation rests on.

Use of qualitative interviews with individuals currently receiving mental health services has inc... more Use of qualitative interviews with individuals currently receiving mental health services has increased over the last decade in the United States due to calls for system change that emphasizes individuals' perceptions of their own progress. However, interviews with youth receiving mental health services are rarely encountered. In this article, an overview of methodological considerations when conducting an interview inquiry with youth currently receiving mental health services will be discussed, incorporating suggestions from the published literature and our experiences with previous interview studies. Our theoretical definition of youth receiving mental health services along with six major areas of concern: appropriate interview questions, youth development of cognitive ability, ethical issues, power relationships, cultural competency, and methods of interview inquiry are discussed. Finally, other researchers are encouraged to investigate techniques for gathering rich data through interview research with youth receiving mental health services.

Pre-Service Teachers' Perceptions of Asynchronous Online Discussion on Blackboard

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand students' perceptions of using async... more The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand students' perceptions of using asynchronous online discussion as a learning tool. Six pre-service teachers who took a course in educational technology applications for secondary grades at a Rocky Mountain region mid-sized university were selected to be interviewed. Phenomenological data analysis was used to analyze the interview data. The interviewees' perceptions of the asynchronous online discussions centered around purposes, group size, tools for learning, advantages/disadvantages, and the instructor's role. The findings of this study provide instructors with helpful information on how students perceive asynchronous online discussion and also provide instructors with possible interventions to enhance students' motivations for participating in asynchronous online discussion. , online teaching and learning presents new challenges for faculty, students, and administrators in higher education institutions. Teachers and students have to find the most effective and efficient way to benefit and flourish from the online experience. Learning management systems, such as Blackboard (http://blackboard.com) and WebCT (http://www.webct.com), have been developed to help implement online classes, including teaching and learning. On campus, many face-to-face classes also use Blackboard as a course supplement. Instructors make use of one of the features of Blackboard called "discussion board" as a tool to increase the interaction in online classes. However, some people do not like using discussion board to teach or learn because of low student participation and motivation, and also because of the long time spent in reading and replying. On the other hand, other people report positive feedback and attitudes towards the use of asynchronous online discussion. Positive feedback and attitudes bring hope for the improvement and the ongoing implementation of online discussions.

Supporting Students of Diverse Sexual Orientation in Higher Education: An Ethnography of an LGBTAQ Center

The authors conducted an ethnography of a university queer cultural center's role on campus and i... more The authors conducted an ethnography of a university queer cultural center's role on campus and in the surrounding community. The dataset included participant observation, in-depth interviews, and artifacts. The authors present a review of LGBTQA issues in higher education, heterosexual attitudes, transgender, ethics, and queer theory literature. The findings of roles/barriers to the Center's mission plus the devastating murder of a woman who was transgender and suicide of a Center student prompted the authors to use research poetry as a means to express the inexpressible. Furthermore, they illustrate tensions between contemporary queer and traditional gay theories through the telling of a straight tale (traditional report) and a gay tale (experiential report), interrupted with queer tales (poetic interludes) and queer asides. At the heart of the tale is the transformation of a gay man to a researcher and scholar of gay issues. This tale is therefore at all times queer, gay, and straight.
