In this paper we present the tools and the methods which have been developed in order to manage a... more In this paper we present the tools and the methods which have been developed in order to manage and consult multimedia ethnographical archives, the content of which is composed of text, images, audios (both songs and spoken documents) and videos. The system offers the user several retrieval strategies for querying the multimedia archive database exploiting alphanumeric relational query, audio similarity query and clustering, image and video similarity. Once a subset of materials meeting the user's information needs have been identified, these images can be displayed in a 3D virtual exhibition which the user can visit interactively. The system presented is actually exploited to manage and multimodal navigate the Archive of Ethnography and Social History of the Lombardy Region some 18,000 oral documents, 3,000 textual transcriptions, 2,000 musical transcriptions, 18,000 MP3 audio files, 10,000 photos, 500 videos [1].

Communicating the communication: an experience in cultural and social campaigns

From the marketing perspective advertising materials and marketing campaigns and publications suc... more From the marketing perspective advertising materials and marketing campaigns and publications such as books, CD-ROMs, brochures, flyers, posters could play a central role in collecting directly or indirectly more incomes to sustain all the museum's activities and should be therefore promoted. For example, posters and photos can easily be made available in digital forms to a vaster audience on the museum's website. In this paper we present some innovative tools developed while designing a new portal for the promotion of a database of campaigns of social communication. We focus on strategies for querying and browsing the digital materials in new, engaging ways, with a particular attention to younger generations accustomed to the digital medium. To this end, we have developed innovative tools able to query and browse the database, and display the results using information automatically extracted from both images and texts.

Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, obliges State Parties to inv... more Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, obliges State Parties to inventory cultural heritage and making those inventories accessible. This process is a rather complex activity, involving different skills and competences, such as ethnographers, social history experts, etc. who detect cultural heritage to be inserted in the catalog, identifying the best practices and defining what kind of information to keep track of. In this paper we will present three environments that compose a framework for the inventorying, cataloging, searching and browsing of multimedia digital objects related to ICH (Intangible Cultural Heritage), developed to design and implement the AESS archive (Archive of Ethnography and Social History of Lombardy Region): the data concern mainly popular traditions handed down generation by generation, such as traditional fairs, popular songs, and customs.

In this paper we will present the ICH cataloging card for the inventory of intangible cultural heritage on the web, which is one of the results of the E.CH.I. project, integrated in the AESS database that stores information concerning the oral history of the Italian Lombardy territory.

The web sites offer several retrieval strategies for querying the multimedia database exploiting alphanumeric relational query, and similarity search. We compare two different ways of browsing and searching UNESCO intangible heritage objects on the web, that draw data from the same database at different levels of depth, from the Archive of Ethnography and Social History of the Lombardy Region.
