However, contrary to the publisher's claim, this work on McGrigor should not be taken as definitive. The editor, while drawing on McGrigor's papers in other collections for her introduction and linking passages, does not discuss the provenance of the manuscript, nor when McGrigor wrote it (the Wellcome Library catalogue suggests 1835). Further, she has a tendency to quote uncritically chunks of primary or secondary works rather than give her own clear account of the background informed by recent historiography. Finally, a minor point, but indicative: the year of birth on the title page of the autobiography is given as 1770, while the reference to the year of birth in the introduction and in other sources is 1771: either this is a typographical error in this edition, or it deserves a comment from the editor. ...

The Cambridge Urban History of Britain

Britain as voluntarism became municipal and increasingly mutually interdependent with the local state of local government and the poor law. In the mid-nineteenth century the reliance on families for the provision of social welfare may have been even greater in urban industrial towns than rural areas and small towns. The chapter then focuses on the continuities and changes in the provision of social services with regard to poverty and health. It explores alternative sources of assistance and their interrelationships in the mixed economy of welfare. Finally, the chapter examines to what extent these changed during the period and paying particular attention to whether there were distinctive urban aspects and to variations among urban areas.

The aim is to elucidate the development both of the medical profession and the life insurance business--two important aspects of economic and social change in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries which are usually treated separately. The focus is primarily, though not exclusively, on Scottish companies as they carried out a disproportionately large amount of the UK life assurance business by the mid-nineteenth century. The insurance industry's increasing, and increasingly systematic, tapping of medical expertise enabled it to raise profits by reducing losses on standard policies and by venturing out into types of business previously thought too risky. While nineteenth-century medical therapeutics may have left much to be desired, medical involvement in insurance suggests that medical practitioners were by no means ineffective. At the same time, a substantial proportion of the medical profession gained valuable part-time appointments which helped to alter the diagnostic techniques of the profession more generally. Thus insurance turns out to be an especially important element in the 'non-healing' aspects of medicine, with spin-offs for the healing side as well.

But, in the early 1840s, a new system of water treatment, called hydropathy, which involved baths, showers and sheets, arrived in Britain, and nowhere did it take stronger root than in Scotland. The appeal of its curative regime to middle class society was enhanced by firm emphasis on temperance, and the hydros became the place for respectable holidays. This study examines the enthusiasts and practioners who ran the hydros, the personnel and patients, the visitors and the guests, and looks at why the Scottish hydros were so successful whereas the Scottish spas faded.
