
Marco Tonelli
MARCO TONELLI (1971) is a contemporary art critic.
He teaches since 2021 History of Contemporary Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and is Scientific curator of Fondazione Progetti Beverly Pepper in Todi.. Between 2013 and 2014 he was the curator of site specific exhibitions at the Palazzo Te in Mantova of Fabrizio Plessi, Bill Viola, Candida Höfer, Bertozzi & Casoni. He has curated also personal shows of Mark di Suvero, Giuseppe Penone, Fabrizio Plessi, Maurizio Mochetti, Mark Francis, Loris Cecchini, Paolo Canevari, Giorgio Griffa, Ugo La Pietra, Gianni Asdrubali, Bruno Ceccobelli, Maurizio Cannavacciuolo, Paola Pezzi.
He was a member of the Invitation Committee for the 2005 XIV Quadriennale di Roma and Editor in chief of the art and culture magazine Terzo Occhio in 2008, attaining a Degree in History of Contemporary Art at Università La Sapienza of Rome (1996), a Post graduate (2000) and a PhD in History of Art (2004) at the Università degli Studi of Siena.
His last publication is "Pascali disegna Pascali. Il taccuino di annotazioni", edited by De Luca Editori, 2024 and "Pino Pascali. La scultura e il suo doppio", edited by Electa, 2023. He has written also monographies and essays about Burri (La scultura di Alberto Burri. Opera inversa, Fondazione Burri, 2020), Bacon (Francis Bacon: le “atmosfere” letterarie, De Luca Editori, Roma, 2014), Leoncillo (Leoncillo. Piccolo Diario, Skira, 2019) and Pascali (Pino Pascali. Il libero gioco della scultura, Johan & Levi, 2010).
He is the Curator of the General Catalogue of the sculptures of Pino Pascali (1964-1968) and has written books and essays about modern sculpture and ancient memory.
He was Artistic Director for the Foundation Museo of Montelupo Fiorentino and curator of the project Scultura in Piazza at Palazzo Ducale of Mantova (2016 Hidetoshi Nagasawa, 2018 Eduard Habicher, 2019 Lucio e Peppe Perone).
Between 2019 and 2023 he was Director of Palazzo Collicola and Galleria d'Arte Moderna "G. Carandente" of Spoleto and Secretary of the Comitato Nazionale per le celebrazioni del Centenario della nascita di Giovanni Carandente. Since 2024 is Secretary of Edizione Nazionale Cesare Brandi.
