A bad diet and lack of physical activity are the most commonly reported causes of overweight and cellulite. Unfortunately, problems with slimming and "orange peel" may not only result from dietary mistakes but also hormonal imbalance. Aim of the paper. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of hypothyroidism on overweight, the degree of obesity and the prevalence of cellulite in patients with hypothyroidism in the course of Hashimoto's disease. Material and methods. The study was carried out in March 2018 in Opole Lubelskie. The study group consisted of 35 women over 18 years of age. The research tool was the standardised Contour Drawing Rating Scale (Thompson and Gray) and the author's questionnaire. Results. The calculated BMI values of the subjects showed the presence of overweight in every fifth woman, class I obesity in 11.43%, class II obesity in 28.57% and class III obesity in 40% of the respondents. According to 94.28% of the respondents, physical activity affects the appearance of the body, but only 5.72% of the study subjects do sports. Among the respondents, over half (68.57%) indicated the presence of third-degree cellulite. Conclusions. Cellulite is most common in overweight and obese women. The occurrence of overweight and obesity may be associated with a poor diet and low physical activity, but also with hormonal disorders resulting from thyroid dysfunction.

A child truly cured is only the patient who is a long-time survivor from a medical point of view as well as with fill psychosocial adjustment. This is the reason for many efforts which are undertaken to establish the principles of psychosocial support of children with neoplastic disease. Also in Poland such activities have started. This multicentre study was performed on the optimalisation of biomedical and psychosocial support of cancer children and their parents based on the recommendations of SIOP Working Committee on Psychosocial Issues in Paediatric Oncology adjusted to Polish conditions. The analysis showed the important role of introducing the principles of biomedical and psychosocial support. The implemented unified model of giving information about cancer to the children tells us who of them needs the additional psychosocial interventions. There is also a neccessity to improve the communication skills of the paediatricians.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a condition that affects over 2 million adults in Poland. In recent years, increasing attention has been focused on improving the quality of life of patients with COPD, which includes alleviating their physical discomfort and relates to their mental health. It is therefore critically important to evaluate research tools that can accurately assess the relationship between the physical and mental health of patients with this disease. Objective. This aim of the study is to evaluate the relationship between the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) and the Distress Thermometer and Problem List results in COPD patients. Materials and Method. The research evaluated 70 patients with COPD as defined by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (GOLD) criteria. Demographic data was obtained at baseline. Disease-specific quality of life was assessed using the CAT score, while overall distress was determined using the Distress Thermometer (DT) scale and a modified Problem List. The relationship between the CAT scores and the results of the Distress Thermometer and Problem List was statistically compared. The study was approved by the Bioethics Committee, and all patients provided written informed consent. Results. The mean ± SD age was 69.6±9.05 (range 47-90) years. The average distress level was 4.09±1.95. A significant relationship was established between the CAT score and the results of the Distress Thermometer Scale (p<0.001); patients with higher CAT scores showed the highest level of distress. Conclusions. CAT was shown to be a simple, fast and clear measurement of disease-specific quality of life and was correlated with levels of distress in patients with COPD. Every patient with COPD should be evaluated using a scale such as the DT to measure their level of psychological distress.

Metabolic disorders, the coexistence of many diseases, lack of physical activity, bad nutrition and low economic status are factors, which increase the risk of being overweight or obese. We are currently witnessing an increase in obesity along with age, which has been intensifying in recent years. Aim of the paper. The aim of the paper was to analyse the influence of overweight and obesity among the elderly on their life activity, level of self-esteem and satisfaction with life. Material and methods. The research was carried out on October 2017 in Opole Lubelskie (in Lubelskie Province). The study group consisted of 50 people aged over 65. The selection criteria for respondents were age (> 65) and BMI (>25). A specially prepared questionnaire was used for the research. The BMI of the respondents was calculated from measures of their height and body mass. Results. The BMI calculated confirmed class I obesity among 28.57% of women and 18.19% of men, class II obesity in 39.29% of women and 36.36% of men and class III obesity in 32.14% of women and 45.45% of men (Graph 1). 78% of respondents assessed their lifestyle as not very active. A whole 92% are not satisfied with their appearance. All those surveyed believe they are perceived badly by other people. Conclusions. Obesity has a major influence on the quality of life of people of advanced age. Excessive body mass has a detrimental effect on self-esteem and can lead to the elderly withdrawing from social life.

Rodzice chorujących dzieci stanowią grupę szczególnie podatną na wystąpienie negatywnych emocji i zakłóceń w funkcjonowaniu psychicznym. Celem przeprowadzonego badania była ocena poziomu depresji i postrzeganego wsparcia społecznego wśród rodziców dzieci leczonych z powodu choroby nowotworowej. Materiał i metody: Badaniem objęto grupę 50 rodziców dzieci z rozpoznaniem choroby nowotworowej. W badaniu zastosowano ankietę własnego autorstwa, Skalę Depresji Becka (BDI) oraz Skalę Oceny Wsparcia Społecznego (Interpersonal Support Evaluation List-40 v. General Population ISEL-40 v. GP). Wyniki i wnioski: W badanej grupie rodziców średni wynik w skali BDI wynosił 18 punktów (SD = 8, p > 0,05). U większości badanych występowały co najmniej objawy klasyfikowane jako łagodna depresja (68%), a u istotnej części z nich objawy depresji umiarkowanej (16%) i ciężkiej (16%). W przeprowadzonym badaniu uzyskano istotną statystycznie korelację między poziomem depresji a wynikami poszczególnych podskal Skali Oceny Wsparcia Społecznego. Najwyższą, umiarkowaną korelację uzyskano między depresyjnością a podskalą samooceny (r =-0,4717, p = 0,001). Uzyskane wyniki ukazują przydatność narzędzi przesiewowych, takich jak BDI oraz Skali Oceny Wsparcia Społecznego, w rozpoznawaniu ryzyka depresji u rodziców i identyfikowaniu deficytów wsparcia społecznego.

Methods: In our study, the Conception of Stuttering Scale (CSS) and the Motivation for Stutter Therapy Scale (MSTS) were used. Participants: The research involved 297 participants, 81 women and 216 men, all aged from 18 to 54 years. All participants had started to stutter before the age of 7, they all had stutter symptoms (confirmed by an experienced speech therapist), thought themselves to be stutterers, and had undergone at least one therapy. Results: Overall, the respondents were likely to consider stuttering a speech impediment, logoneurosis, communication disorder, or an illness. They mostly supported the idea of comprehensively diagnosing stuttering and they did not have a uniform conception of stutter therapy. They were most likely to opt for therapies based on speech practice or psychotherapy. Their motivation for speech therapy was mostly moderate. Motivation for stutter therapy was markedly higher in women than in men. A significant positive correlation was revealed between speech practice and non-acceptance of stuttering. Conclusions: Stuttering persons have differed conceptions of the etiology, basis, diagnosis, and treatment of stuttering. Motivation for stutter therapy in adults is moderate and is not associated with their concept of stuttering.

Burnout and empathy affect employees in social professions due to the demanding work environment. Characterized, among others, by: stress, experiencing failure, workload and its multitasking. At the same time, social professions require high interpersonal skills, active listening, communication, empathy, patience and interest from people who practice them. Aim. The aim of the study was to analyze the influence of occupational burnout on showing empathy among medical personnel towards patients. Material and methods. The research was conducted among a group of 104 nurses and 103 doctors, working in hospitals and clinics located in urban areas. The nurses' mean age is 37,35 (SD=11.32), the doctors' mean age is 32.50 (SD=8.29).The surveyed persons completed a set of questionnaires: Self-authorship sheet for collecting sociodemographic data, Link Burnout Questionnaire by Massimo Santinello, and Personal Empathy Questionnaire by Zenon Uchnast. Results. The conducted research shows a negative correlation between occupational burnout and the empathy of medical personnel. Research also shows that burnout affects younger medical staff with a short period of work and wage-driven. On the other hand, empathy is visible above the age of 40. Conclusion. The research deepened the knowledge about the factors of burnout, which have an impact on the negative perception of development opportunities, failure to perceive work efficiency and the perception of the professional situation as significantly exceeding the individual's abilities. Negative correlations between burnout and staff empathy indicate a lack of burnout in empathetic people. However, you should bear in mind that having mature empathy protects you from burnout.
