ASC Conference uses education and practice as the main themes to channel papers that range across different built environment disciplines. Although most contributions to the ASC conference were facilitated by US-based institutions, there is a growing international interest, hence, it is vital to recognize conference considerations, contributions to academia and the industry and shed the light on future trends. This paper attempted to thematically review ASC proceedings from 2002-2021 retrieved from ASC archives with a total of 1317 manuscripts. The findings revealed that the main themes of academia and industry have been equally recognized in the ASC conference proceedings with a noticeable rise toward industry-based publications in recent years. As resulted from thematic analysis, 11 main publication disciplines were proposed. The construction management, risk management and sustainability disciplines have been mostly served among the proposed disciplines. The trend analysis highlighted the growing tendency to integrate technology features into academia and industry research. Finally, the key research findings facilitate a robust mechanism to determine future ASC conference themes while unveiling avenues to expand international outreach and exposure.

However, few studies have explored how such issues manifest in the operational use of historic buildings developed for reuse, the significance on cities, and the long-term socioeconomic value. This study proposes a stewardship-based strategy to manage facilities to improve the socioeconomic value of historic buildings and support the socioeconomic demand in cities and territories. Within the context of a selected case study in the UK, a mixed-method approach was used to attain the data. Quantitative evidence, using a questionnaire survey with building users, and qualitative evidence, using semi-structured interviews with the facility management team, are presented. The results suggest that historic buildings are empowered by an organisational stewardship strategy, resulting in an acceptable operational compromise that involves an acceptance of building issues and their impact on the building users' experience, and this can support the more operational adaption of facilities by the facility management team. The research proposes a stewardship-based strategy to support an improved socioeconomic value by incorporating user perspectives while ensuring a less preservation-centred and a more flexible-oriented approach towards managing facilities in historic buildings. This study constructively forms a base for further research into facility management strategies in historic buildings and their impact on cities' needs.

While data/information within the UK residential sector relating to location, sizes and volumes are annually updated, there is limited emphasis on the methods of construction that support meeting housing demands. Over the years, it has been recognised that the UK residential sector has been dominated by two methods of construction: timber frame and masonry. This study aims to holistically compare timber frames with masonry as the two domineering construction methods for the UK residential sector. The comparison will be based on build costs, preference and drivers by construction professionals, longevity and consumer confidence, and sustainability. The research methodology was developed based on applying mixed methods of quantitative data analysis of build costs and qualitative data assessment of semi-stru...

However, the role of VM and its integration as part of the WLC in a construction project remain reactive, and highly impacted by nature of the project, and this has become more challenging with the epidemic impact of COVID-19. This research aims to investigate the mechanisms that delivers value management as part of the “re-invent” strategy proposed by the Construction Leadership Council in the UK government to improve WLC for buildings. In addition to existing secondary data from the literature, primary data were attained using a focus group with six quantity surveyors from different cost consultancies in the UK to gather qualitative evidence using their experiences, perceptions, and key challenges they face when integrating VM. Findings revealed that value management is primarily being used a...

A cyber-attack incurs adverse implications for the facility and its managing organisation. Hence, this paper aims to unravel the impact of a cybersecurity breach, by developing a BIM-facilities management (FM) cybersecurity-risk-matrix to portray what a cybersecurity attack means for various working areas of FM. Design/methodology/approach This study commenced with exploring cybersecurity within various stages of a BIM project. This showcased a heightened risk of cybersecurity at the post-occupancy phase. Hence, thematic analysis of two main domains of BIM-FM and cybersecurity in the built environment led to the development of a matrix that illustrated the impact of a cybersecurity attack on a BIM-FM organisation. Findings Findings show that the existing approaches to the management of c...

Approaches include Building Performance Evaluation, Post Occupancy Evaluation and Total Building Performance. The advent of Building Information Modelling (BIM) has driven a desire to accommodate building performance into models for use during design. This paper will review the suitability of the various approaches to Building Performance for this task. It will argued that to be successful for this then a multiple perspective analysis is required to accommodate users, facilities managers and designers viewpoints of performance. It will be concluded with a discussion on the possibilities of this and the research required to demonstrate it.

Background: It is proposed that involvement of the facility management team at an early design stage can contribute towards enhancing building performance, but this requires a multiple perspective of FM to be adopted. BIM has the potential to be used for managing facilities as it provides extensive information about all physical assets in the building. Approach: Pilot data has been acquired from a newly built and operated university building in the United Kingdom using interviews to capture information from these different perspectives. Results: The differences in perspectives are presented based on the responses collected from the interviews. Three parameters are used to compare and an...

The digital model is not the building and is not the design. The digital model does allow visualisations of the buildings allowing stakeholders a new perception of the building through its 3D representation with the ability to choose viewpoints and to travel dynamically, but virtually, through the represented building. This paper explores what is perceived by clients and users in building information models using phenomenology. It emphasises the differences in perception and explores the meaning of this for design and construction. The work has involved interviews and experimental studies with users using models in different forms including static 3D, walk through(s), 2D and room data sheets. The results show that different people view models with a difference in focus, intent and expectation. This makes m...

A sound construction project schedule allows informed decisions, appropriate actions and improved management of actions. Construction planning is based on activity scheduling and many tools and applications have been developed to manage durations, resources and risks. However, this is time-consuming, error-prone and insufficiently coordinated because of the continual acquisition and updating of data needed to keep the plan relevant. To help this, 4D BIM technology is seen as revolutionary digital solution which can automate much of the effort as well as producing better output and to operate this in real time. This move to 4D BIM technologies for planning puts more emphasis on the objects in the 3D model and these become the drivers of the schedule. This study aims to unpack the difference between activity based and object-based emphasis in constructi...

This paper reports a pilot study using SSM to explore the challenges of establishing the Ideal Speech Situation in order to gain an understanding of the contradictory perceptions of graffiti. Through exploring this social phenomenon from the views of both graffiti writers and the general public, power and ego were identified as challenges to establishing an Ideal Speech Situation. Analysing these challenges in the context of graffiti provides insight into how these barriers may hinder the effective application of socio-technical approaches.

Building ‘performance’ has been an area of major research interest, so that efficient buildings are constructed that operate effectively to support the functional purposes for which they are being used. It is a complex concept that has been difficult to measure and incorporate into building design. Many methods and approaches have been developed to assess ‘performance’ for the purpose of addressing the gap between predicted – and actual – performance. However, it is acknowledged that these methods/approaches lack accuracy, are time consuming and do not provide a holistic view of the complex procedures and processes involved during the design and physical construction of the building. Building Information Modelling (BIM) provides a new way of integrating information technology within the c...

Hence, applications supporting BIM are in continuous development to support various activities involved in a construction project. However, effective development requires sufficient usability considerations to ensure a value-delivery to the end-user. Current research efforts demonstrate limited emphasis of usability considerations in relation to BIM technology, which can have an influence on the usefulness of this technology in the construction industry. This paper aims to inquire into the usability considerations given to the BIM technology, exploring some of the potential complexities associated when conducting the usability tests. Evidence has been demonstrated using both existing literature and semi-structured interviews with one of the BIM software vendors. The gathered results demonstrate the need for formal usability considerati...
